Chapter 6

(Airi, please mark the location of the village on the map)

(Already done)

(Then, please open the map)

She did so and after looking at the distance, I quickened my steps.

I soon came upon the village. It was a small village, surrounded by walls made of bricks. The houses weren't anything to write home about and I concluded that most of them were farmers. The entrance was guarded by two guards wearing black clothes.

I slowly made my way towards them and after introducing myself, I was led inside towards the village chief's house. I reckoned he was the one who had made the request.

An old man called Han greeted me. He was using a cane to walk and waved towards a chair for me to sit.

"Thank God. I didn't know when the request would be picked up since the amount was quite low."

"I understand. I'm just starting out but since they have assigned me this request, I'll do my best to complete it. You can rest easy", I said.

The old man smiled.

"Have you had lunch?"

"Not yet," I said.

The old man clapped his hands and a few people came in. He asked them to prepare a meal.

"Please have a meal. After that I'll let someone guide you towards the place where the gray wolves had been seen."

I accepted his hospitality.

After lunch which was again bread and stew, Han introduced a young boy called Samuel and told that he would be guiding me around the area.

We soon set out towards the place where the sightings were more frequent.

Samuel was a curious boy and he kept asking me questions about adventurers. I told him that I had only recently registered as an adventurer and this is my first extermination request. He told me that his dream was to be an adventurer and that he would soon go to the city to register himself.

I looked at his status.

[Name: Samuel

Age: 17

Race: Human

Skills: Magic (Water), Hand to hand combat, Swordsmanship]

It didn't seem that bad.

"I'm sure you will be successful", I said.

We soon reached the part of the forest where the gray wolves had been seen. Most of them were venturing out from inside the forest and attacking the villagers who went to forage for fruits and vegetables.

I concentrated on my senses and opened the map.

(Master, there are 20 gray wolves within a one kilometer radius and a higher species that looks to be the leader)

I told Samuel to hide. He said he wanted to come with me but I strongly disagreed. I'm still new to this. And to try to fight while shielding someone will be too much for me.

I slowly made my way towards the clearing where the wolves were. As I got nearer, I saw that there were bones scattered everywhere in the vicinity. And it looked like human bones. And they were munching on something. I instinctively knew what it was.

(Master, I would suggest attacking first with magic)

(Alright)

I readied a fire spell called fire spear and shot it towards them.

It pierced the three wolves who were eating the carcass and they fell down. The other wolves jumped back and growled at me. Then five wolves shot towards me as if attuned to the growls. I took out the sword I had made with Alchemy and took a fighting stance. As they brushed past me trying to bite my neck, I jumped and sliced at them rotating my body. The necks of all the five wolves fell down separated from their bodies. Though I had checked the sharpness of the blade before, I was still a little surprised by the ease of wielding it.

Then the rest of the wolves began to howl. They parted ways and I could see a black wolf emerging from the middle. It had red eyes and a bigger body than two of the wolves combined.

(Master, that's a meta wolf. Be careful, it shoots venom from its mouth.)

I readied my stance and created three spears of light and shot it towards him. Three wolves came forward and sacrificed themselves to save him. He growled and began to run towards me. As he reached me, he shot a venom breath towards me trying to paralyze me while swiping at me at the same time. I quickly made a barrier of wind and it was deflected. He jumped backwards and glared at me.

Then the rest of the wolves as if waiting for their leader to attack first all lunged towards me. I twisted my body and sliced at them. Two of them were dead on the spot while the rest jumped back.

(Master, use Ice age.)

I readied the spell and shot it towards them. All of the seven wolves were frozen without being able to react. But the meta wolf easily jumped back and glared at me. I glared back and motioned for it to come.

He gave a howl and suddenly turned back and began running towards the inside of the forest.

(Master, it's getting away!)

(Not today.)

I reading a homing spear of light and shot it towards him. At the same time, I began chasing him. My body felt quite light and I began running at an incredible speed. I was soon able to see him. The spear of light had grazed him near his leg and he was bleeding. But he seemed to have avoided a fatal blow.

I jumped on a tree and vaulted towards him. He saw me and became wary but he still jumped towards me baring his fangs. I think it was quite angry at losing his comrades. He tried to attack me again with his breath but I blocked it again.

I sliced at him and he bit the sword. He had tremendous strength and almost pushed me back. But I infused energy into the sword and sliced at him again. This time the sword was able to cut through his neck and he fell down.

(Master, that's.....very well done)

(Yes, this was a good experience. But why do you seem disappointed!)

I sat down on the ground. It was tiring. From this fight I knew I needed to increase my stamina. I looked at the sword. It was a very well made sword if I do say so myself. The sharpness and how it moved the way I wanted it to. But the meta wolf was able to stop this sword even though just once. I needed to create a heavier sword. Let's put it on the list of things to do.

(Master, you will be able to create better weapons once you find better ores.)

(I see. I think we should concentrate on that for the time being.)

I quickly put the meta wolf inside the item box and headed back. On the way, I put the rest of the gray wolves inside the box. Then I looked for the carcass. It seemed it was a human being but it was unrecognizable now. Only the skull and a few bones remained with a little bit of flesh on them. The rest of it were eaten.

I quickly made a grave using earth magic and prayed for his soul. It was the least I could do.

Then I headed back to the place where Samuel was waiting.

As I made my way, I heard a rustling sound. I looked at the source of the sound and I saw Samuel staring at me. He jumped up as soon as he saw that I had noticed him.

"Wow, how did you do that. I thought you were ranked F."

"Haha, I've just had some sword training.'

"That's...not just some..."

"I thought I told you to stay back."

"I just wanted to see it a little", he said holding his head down.

"Alright, alright. Let's not do that again. It could have been dangerous."

"Yes!"

"Then let's head back."

We slowly made our way back to the village.

Han was waiting for us. He looked at me and I nodded.

"All of them had been killed."

I took out the bodies from my item box and showed him.

"Thank God. You're our savior. After a few people went missing, we didn't know what to do as we didn't have much money to put in the request."

I told him that the money was enough and that I was happy to help them.

I offered them the wolves but they denied saying that they didn't want anything to do with these wolves.

I reluctantly put them inside the item box and after assuring them that there would be no more wolves, I made my way back to the city.

It was almost evening when I reached the city. I made my way back to the association and saw that Reina was still at the reception desk.

She smiled at me.

"What brings you here this evening. Are you going to do the quest tomorrow?"

"Ahaha, I already completed it."

"You did?!"

"Yes."

"But it hasn't even been five hours since you accepted it."

I told her that the proof was inside my item box and I have come to sell the materials.

She still seemed shocked but guided me towards the back. I met Adeon who was working on a monster carcass.

"Do you have something for me today?" he came to greet me.

"Yeah...haha"

I was led to the same space with rune symbols and I took out the bodies of the wolves.

"Oh my", Reina said.

"Did you kill these yourself", Adeon asked.

"Yeah."

"Is that a meta wolf?"

"Yeah, he was leading the pack. I killed him somehow after struggling for a bit."

"How did you kill a C rank monster when you're just F?"

"Ahaha, I guess I got lucky."

"This...looks like more than luck," Reina said.

"This is really some nice swordsmanship," Adeon said running his hand on the cuts made by my sword.

"Alright, give me until tomorrow and I'll have them ready for you."

We both thanked him.

Then Reina turned to me and said, "Please come with me."

I was led to the reception desk and she asked me for my card.

"I will be processing a rank up for you since you were single handedly able to defeat those monsters and even took down the meta wolf."

"Thank you." I was surprised but I didn't show it. It seems it was easier to rank up.

(Master, it's a good thing. You will be able to accept better requests.)

(Yeah. That's true)

"Please visit tomorrow to collect the money for the materials. And here's the 5 silver coins for the request."

I thanked her and made my way out of the building.

The sun had already set and the street lights were starting to come on. I casually strolled around the area. The shops were starting to light up and it gave the feeling of being in a carnival, looking at the buildings lined up on either side of me shining brightly. They had advertisements stuck on their windows competing for the lowest prices.

(Tomorrow, we'll have to meet the magic tower master. I wonder what he wants.)

(Master, I think he wants to know how you achieved the 6th circle.)

(I guess so. We'll just talk for a while and make our way to Astrya.)

(I think that'd be for the best. It's better to not reveal about me.)

(Don't worry.)

I bought a few snacks along the way and made my way back to the inn.
