Chapter 14

Sir Auzier informed us that we were nearing the city, and as we approached, the road became a bustling spectacle teeming with people on foot, lengthy carriages, and buses shuttling back and forth between the city and its surroundings. The buses in this region showcased a higher level of appeal compared to those near Flaedan, as did the carriages. The road then split into two lanes, with one exclusively designated for bikes and cars. Sir Auzier explained that this additional lane had been recently constructed to alleviate congestion issues and facilitate quicker access for nobles traveling to the city. A lovely road, flanked by trees on either side, unfolded before us. The vehicles, including the one I was traveling in, smoothly maintained a steady pace as they advanced towards the city.

We soon ascended to a higher elevation, from which the road gently descended. Gradually, the city began to unfold before us, revealing its skyline.

It was a true metropolis. The city spread as far as the eyes could reach, resembling a city inside a city. A massive wall enveloped its entirety, extending so far that I could not even see the end of it. A fleet of airships were floating in the air that closely resembled Zeppelins.

In the heart of the city, two towering structures stood in magnificent contrast, facing each other with majestic grandeur. One soared in pristine white, while its counterpart gleamed in a sunflower yellow, both reaching skyward until their summits vanished into the embrace of clouds. Countless houses painted in different colors stood in perfect harmony. Grand structures dotted the central city, which gradually gave way to smaller residences as the city expanded outward. Broad roads crisscrossed the entire metropolis, emphasizing the vibrant allure of the colorful houses. A sprawling lake flowed through the center, adorned with small boats ferrying people across its calm waters. Vibrant banners adorned the city, suspended in the air and swaying gracefully with the wind. They collectively painted the landscape in a vibrant tone, draping the entire cityscape in a captivating spectrum of colors. The gates and walls, guarded by people in red and blue uniforms, stood tall, while a lengthy line of people, along with various carriages and cars, patiently awaited entry, creating a scene of anticipation.

"Wonderful, isn't it?" inquired Amelia.

"Yeah, it is the largest city I have ever seen," I replied, captivated by the sprawling city.

Heading towards the gate, my attention was drawn to the numerous guards wearing red and blue uniforms, skillfully guiding individuals towards the entrance. The line of cars and carriages patiently awaited their turn, each being permitted entry one by one under the watchful gaze of the color-coordinated guards.

I could see a diverse combination of people awaiting entry, each distinct in their features. Elves, recognizable by their characteristic long ears and flowing hair, stood gracefully in the queue. Dwarfs, with their stout stature and robust build, stood steadfast in the line. Beastmen, displaying a unique union of human and animal traits, added a touch of diversity. Even giants, wearing clothes that somehow rendered them inconspicuous despite their towering size, patiently awaited entry. Of course humans were there in the mix too, waiting with their fellow queue goers.

We soon neared the gate. A separate gate was installed for cars and bikes. Reaching the gate, Auzier stepped out of the car and presented his pass, signaling for me to do the same. I retrieved my adventurer card and displayed it to the guards. They proceeded to record information on a tablet-like device, resembling the ones used at the adventurer association but held in their hands for mobility, in stark contrast to the stationary ones fixed to desks.

We were ushered in, and as we entered, a vibrant explosion of colors enveloped me immediately. The roadside was adorned with buildings of various shades, and even the pedestrians wore clothes in a combination of vibrant colors. Different races seamlessly blended together, their faces lit up with happiness as they engaged in conversation while making their way to various destinations.

Our destination was Amelia's maternal home, situated in the nobles' district of the city. She mentioned that her grandfather had the title of count, belonging to a well-known lineage of mages celebrated for their magical aptitude and a large influence in the city.

Amelia's grandfather was a typical noble who doted on his granddaughter.

"You must be Rayce," he said with a gaze that reflected both curiosity and kindness.

"Yes, that's correct. It's a pleasure to meet you, sir." I nodded and bowed.

His name was Count Lucas Jinet. You could feel the warmth around him and see that he greatly treasured his family. He warmly welcomed us into his grand home, his face telling tales of years gone by. The mansion, a big story of family tradition, whispered the history of their legacy. Stepping inside, the grandmother joined him, her eyes carrying a warmth.

"Where's uncle?" asked Amelia, with a curious face.

"Ah, that stupid son of mine has gone to the magic tower," he smiled with playful annoyance.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

"Hmph, that's alright. I wanted him to meet Rayce," Amelia said.

"Oh, it seems like Rayce holds a special place in my cute granddaughter's heart," he said with a knowing smile.

"Grandpa!" Amelia exclaimed, the air filled with her excitement. The old man, surprised, playfully cowered under her gaze. It was clear Amelia effortlessly connected the family threads, holding everyone in the gentle grasp of her charm. A small, approving smile escaped my lips as I watched the scene unfold.

"It's just that Rayce is a sixth-circle mage, so I wanted my uncle to meet him," she explained, her eyes gleaming with pride.

The Count turned his gaze toward me, his interest piqued. "Oh, a sixth circle at that age. How marvelous. I've also heard that you're a wonderful alchemist."

"Ahaha, it's nothing much. I just had a good teacher," I responded modestly.

"I see. I see," he said, his eyes lingering on me with a subtle intensity.

"Let's go in, shall we?" With a hospitable gesture, he guided us through the ornate halls of the mansion, each step resonating with the echoes of a family's rich history.

The living room whispered with the quiet dignity of the past, adorned discreetly with portraits of ancestors and antique furniture that silently conveyed the family's esteemed lineage. In the gentle ambiance, the count graciously gestured towards an intricately carved sitting area, subtly directing me to settle into the refined elegance.

"I've heard so much about you from Henry," he mentioned with a playful glint in his eyes.

"Ahaha, I owe a lot to the marquis," I replied.

Amelia and her grandmother, Lady Patricia had gone inside, leaving the count and me in a quiet conversation within the living room's refined space. The air carried a delicate balance of history and the present, our words echoing softly in the space filled with lingering familial stories.

The conversation flowed effortlessly. He shared stories from his youth, recounting encounters with magical creatures. I listened attentively. He also expressed curiosity about my background, and I provided him with some details. In return, he spoke of individuals he knew in the Andon continent. Not familiar with them since the background was a farce, I mostly nodded. His genuine interest created a friendly atmosphere.

As our conversation continued, a servant quietly entered with a tray of refreshments. On it were an array of differently colored cookies and a selection of tea. I expressed my gratitude and happily helped myself to the offerings.

He inquired about my plans, and I shared that I didn't have any concrete ones. My intention was to explore the city, perhaps dabble in the potions business, and nurture my magical abilities.

His interest piqued when I mentioned my pursuit of magic, and he kindly offered me accommodation at his house. However, reluctant to tie myself down, I politely declined. My goal was to acquire a house for myself, which was made possible with the available funds.

Amelia and her grandmother joined us later, and our discussion turned to different topics, mainly centered on the academy. Despite their encouragement for me to enroll, even considering my age, I decided against it. Amelia seemed a bit disappointed, but I assured her I'd make a point to visit regularly.

As we talked, the grandparents smiled, showing their warm approval of the growing friendship between us.

After saying goodbye to the family and the accompanying knights, I left the mansion, excited to explore the city. Although Amelia would be preparing for her academy journey the next day, I reassured her that I would visit soon.

"S-see you soon, Rayce," she said with her face red.

"Y-yes, I'll see you soon, Amelia."

(Master!)

She waved at me until I disappeared from her view.

The city's houses, painted in vibrant colours, reflected the craftsmen's deep affection for their surroundings. As I strolled through the city, I spotted colorful gates emitting a soft glow, with people entering and disappearing on the other side.

(Master, those are warp gates. They transport you to a location connected to the other side of the gate.)

(Hmm, seems convenient)

(You can teleport as well, though you'll only be able to go to places you've traveled before.)

(Really?)

The magical information flowed seamlessly into my head through Airi.

Continuing on, and with the need to find a place to stay, I began my search for an inn. Soon, I discovered a charming one nestled between two small fabric shops.

As the evening descended and the three moons of Thieca shined brightly, I checked into my room, fatigue settling in. Tomorrow, my plan was to visit the adventurer guild.

"Tomorrow I should go to the adventurer guild," I thought aloud.

(Yes, master. You need to get stronger.)

Airi echoed, her guidance a steady companion in my journey for strength.

As a month passed by, I got to know the city and its surroundings a little better, taking on various quests that introduced me to the nearby Frithrin forest as well. Despite these endeavors, I continued to stay at the inn. My search for a suitable house turned out to be more costly than anticipated.

Getting a decent-sized house in the capital cost 300 platinum coins, and a mansion was a whopping 1000 platinum coins. Today was important as I waited for funds from the Kaerius trading company. To earn the money, I worked hard on potions, sending nearly 5000 bottles two weeks ago. I was given a makeshift laboratory at the Count's mansion and the potions were sent to the company. In the middle of all this, I briefly saw Amelia. But her busy class schedule meant we only had short moments together. She even told me that she wanted to become an adventurer so that we could complete quests together but I declined. I advised her to finish her studies first.

Leaving my familiar inn, I walked through the busy streets toward Astrya's adventurer guild. The sun shone brightly, casting a glow on the vibrant streets filled with people shopping for their needs.

As I entered the guild, I was greeted by the friendly face of Lakisha, a beastwoman with distinctive feline features. She smiled warmly as I approached the guild's desk.

"Hey, Rayce, here for another quest?" she asked.

"No," I replied, "I've come today to withdraw some money."

"I see."

"By the way, the clients from the last goblin subjugation near the Easten village are still singing your praise. The requests for you to take on quests have been piling up."

"Haha. I'll get to them soon."

By now, I had somehow reached C-rank, handling all of my quests alone – well, not entirely alone. Airi, was always by my side.

(You know it, Master!)
