Chapter 56: Betting with Hagrid

The news in the Daily Prophet that morning caused the students to be listless in class, unable to concentrate on their lessons.

Especially those from Muggle families. After learning about the Crumple-Horned Snorkack in the shortest amount of time, they couldn't help but worry about their families' safety.

It was one of the most dangerous creatures in the magical world, wandering about and feasting on human brains. If it went into the Muggle community...

Just thinking about it made them even more uneasy. Even while sitting in the classroom, their eyes were fixed on the window, hoping that an owl would bring a reply as soon as possible.

The professors didn't have a good solution either. They could only slow down the pace of teaching and try to comfort them.

The situation didn't improve until the second lesson of the morning.

"Chin up, children."

In Herbology class, Professor Sprout walked into the greenhouse and said with a smile to the listless students, "Just now, Mr. Newt Scamander has issued a statement saying that they have confirmed that they have not found any traces of the Crumple-Horned Snorkack in either the wizarding world or the Muggle world.

So, it's probably flown to another place. Don't worry about your families' safety anymore."

As Professor Sprout spoke, she took out a report she had treasured for years and gave everyone a rundown of Newt Scamander's achievements.

Kyle noticed that some of the reports were quite old, the oldest one was faded, and its contents were about commending him for his outstanding contribution to defeating the Dark Wizard Grindelwald.

There was also a photo, where Newt Scamander looked young and handsome.

After reading the reports, the students felt much more at ease.

With the most renowned magical creature expert personally assuring them, it should be fine.

Besides, this person was Headmaster Dumbledore's longtime friend. His credibility was even higher.

By lunchtime, the Great Hall was bustling again.

"I can't believe I actually forgot that I had classes this afternoon." Cedric picked up a whole potato and said with disappointment, "It seems I can't go to Hagrid with you. It's a pity."

Second-year classes were a bit more than first-year classes. Besides weekends and holidays, there were rarely any half-days without classes.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"It's just to get some Mooncalf manure. What's the big deal?" Kyle took a bite of bread and asked, "What's the matter? Are you going to grow ornamental plants too?"

"No, I'm just interested in Mooncalfs." Cedric said, "I heard they dance a very complicated dance under the moonlight. It seems magical. And I haven't seen what a real Mooncalf looks like."

"You'll probably miss the dance." Kyle shrugged, "You'd have to wait until night. Besides, that's past curfew. Unless you want to sneak out."

"I know." Cedric said, "So, I just want to see the Mooncalfs."

"That's still possible." Kyle nodded.

Although Mooncalfs need to sleep during the day, they usually live in caves. You can still see them from the outside.

Of course, that's only if Hagrid is willing to take them to the Forbidden Forest.

Kyle put down his pumpkin juice, "Let's just go there after we eat. It's still an hour before class. We should have time."

Cedric's eyes lit up, "Can we?"

"Of course, there's no set time."

At this time, Kyle also noticed that Kanna seemed interested as well. He casually asked, "Do you want to come along?"

"Hmm!" Kanna hesitated for a moment and nodded.

Thanks to Professor Sprout, she was now very admiring of Newt Scamander and curious about those strange and wonderful magical creatures.

After lunch, the three of them went to the small wooden house next to the Forbidden Forest.

This time, they didn't knock. When they got there, Hagrid was watering his pumpkin patch.

After Halloween, the huge pumpkins in the field were all gone, leaving behind only a few young sprouts.

"To the Forbidden Forest?"

When Kyle explained his intentions, Hagrid shook his head repeatedly, "No, no, first-year students can't go to the Forbidden Forest. It's too dangerous."

"It's okay, Hagrid."

Kyle laughed, "Nobody knows the Forbidden Forest better than you. Besides, Mooncalfs live on the relatively safe edge of the forest. With you there, we definitely won't be in danger."

"Even if you say that, I..."

"Right, you're also very knowledgeable about magical creatures." Kyle continued, "I dare say that after Professor Kettleburn retires, you'll take over as Care of Magical Creatures professor."

"Me, a professor? ... No, you must be joking. How could that be? I'm far from Professor Kettleburn."

Even through his thick beard, Cedric could see the panic on Hagrid's face.

"Well, you're right about one thing. I do know the good kids in the Forbidden Forest."

Hagrid looked at the three of them and then put down his watering can. "Follow me. I'll take you to see those Mooncalfs.

But you have to promise to stay close to me. And don't run around. Otherwise, I'll immediately send you back and never let you go to the Forbidden Forest again!"

"We promise, Professor Hagrid!" The three of them said in unison.

The word "Professor" made Hagrid's face flush red again.

But then, he seemed to think of something. His mood suddenly turned a little low. "I can't be a professor. Don't call me that. It's not good for others to hear."

"You need to have some confidence in yourself."

Kyle stepped forward and patted his back, saying earnestly, "In four years at most, you'll definitely become a professor."

"It's impossible." Hagrid shook his head, "Don't comfort me."

He couldn't even use a wand in front of others, how could he become a professor?

"How about we make a bet."

Kyle extended four fingers, "If you don't become a professor in four years, I'll find a way to get Newt to let you keep a dragon here for two months when he's on holiday in Hogwarts."

Hagrid stopped in his tracks, turning his head in disbelief, "Mr. Scamander has a dragon?"

"Yes." Kyle nodded, "It has a terrible temper. When it leaves Newt, it attacks every creature it sees indiscriminately. That's why the Romanian dragon reserve returned it three times. The third time, they clearly said they wouldn't accept it.

Besides, its personality isn't suitable for being released into the wild. It can only be kept in a suitcase."

"I agree." Hagrid nodded immediately.
