Diary entry: Magic

Fairies

To the Fairies magic is like another limb. They can use it for direct combat (Like Jaya who used her Strings to attack Mei) Or as traditional magic and cast spells. (typical fireballs and all that)

The Spells are ranked and so are the spell users.

Only certain fairies can use certain spells (such as the Royalty specific spell to give birth to another royal).

And certain spells just require more magic which naturally excludes the commoners from using them.

They use magic at the simple cost of the magic they were able to gather within themselves and manifest it through spells.

So to someone like Mei or Finn who has a very high perception of Magic and can, therefore, gather and use it faster casting a spell is really just like directing an orchestra to play a certain song.

Goblins

The goblins have very limited access to magic, sort of like how an illegitimate child would have very little access to the father’s resources.

Generally, they cannot extend their magic outside of themselves. So they're magic is restricted to things like body strengthening spells and other things. But similarly, they are pretty resistant to magic. Spells franked below lower Nobel wouldn't work on the Majority of them.

One unique thing about the goblins, however, are their abilities to grant wishes. Unlike when a fairy ‘grants a wish’ the goblins are engaging in direct Trade with the magic system of the world.

The highest rank of Goblin is called Rumpelstiltskin.

The Goblin also have a ‘royal’ like status in their court but it manifests pretty differently than with the fairies.

While the impact of the fairy royalty encourages feelings of love and protectiveness which can manifest as loyalty and obsession or stalking.

The goblin is purely undying loyalty and obedience. The emperor recognized by the magic will never be questioned and will always be obeyed.

And while a fairy could possibly harm a royal if the effects took a more negative turn a goblin would rather die than to do so. To the point where their own hearts would stop before they could lay a finger on them.

The Royals can 1) grant wishes on a MUCH larger scale than others. They can generally use stronger spells as well and are usually the strongest.

One cannot become a Royal in the winter court simply by blood right and the title of the emperor’ can only be gained by beating the previous emperor in battle.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Of course, it usually ends up going to those with the blood of Royals anyways as they would have had more training and just a stronger base than others. But the magic recognizes merit with the goblins.

The son of the emperor is usually afforded a fraction the emperor’s power but if they fail to become the next emperor then the backlash will be deadly.

They also love to bet (probably in tune with their ability to grant wishes) so one doesn't necessarily have to beat the previous emperor in physical combat to take the next title.

Simply winning a bet is enough.

In the case that the emperor dies before a new emperor is declared the power is returned to the previous emperor within four generations.

If all four are dead however then the next emperor has to defeat every single goblin in the empire before they can become the emperor.

The goblins are also popular for their inventions and aesthetic sense. Much of the ‘hottest’ fashion items in the fairy and which kingdom usually come from the winter court.

*I'll elaborate more on the Goblins society later on but this part of the book is Pretty Fae centric.*

Witches

The witches are a weird balance between the Fairies and the goblins

If the fairies were the golden children of magic and the goblins were the illegitimate sons then the witches would be the second son for the first daughter in a traditional world.

Recognized as legitimate but not even nearly as valued.

The Witches magic manifests through rituals and much more complicated spells than those of the Fairies but they can manifest magic outside of themselves, unlike the goblins.

In order to use magic in a faster way than manually chatting them out each time the Witches usually deconstruct favored spells and tattoo them onto themselves in order to cast them. They also have a lot of tools in order to make up the difference and summoned animals.

For this reason, witches usually fight in groups of 2-5 depending on the strength and experience of the witches.

Out of the races in the other world the witches are probably the most human-like in that they are always trying to break the limitations of their race.

They are the creators of many commonplace items across all courts and due to their heavy research in spells, they have created many new spells and techniques for both goblins and fairies.

An example of which would be the bewitchment spell.

The witches specialize in mental attacks and have a bad history with cursing significant figures in history to do their bidding.

The goblins hate the Witches and vice versa due to bad blood and history between the two races but generally, they respect one another.

Meanwhile, the Fairies and witches generally get along with each other. With the Fairies seeing the witches as the malformed younger sibling they developed a soft spot for and the witches seeing the fairies as something to strive towards becoming and eventually overthrow.

The witches are also much more gender-balanced than the goblins and witches and have a decently balanced population of both witches and Warlocks

If a fairy and a witch mate then the kids will get one or the others powers and it's not dependent on gender at all. There is no such thing as a half witch half fairy mix because of the similarities in their constitution.

A witch is commonly called a ‘discount fairy’ as a derogatory term because the main difference between them is the lack of wings and smaller magic capacity.

The witches version of the royal status is somewhat similar to the fairies in that they can somewhat process ‘wool’ but they would only get ‘thread’ rather than ‘yarn’ for the double effort, as well they have extreme results with mental spells and naturally gain the trust from their fellow witches.

Rather than obsession or obedience the witch ‘royal’ naturally inspires trust from those around them.
