15. Jaeden vs. the Not Dying Game

As the light from the Shade Amalgam’s destruction dimmed, Jaeden stood, his legs shaky but steady enough to keep him upright. The chamber was unnaturally quiet, the oppressive weight of the battle dissipating like smoke on the wind. But the faint glow of the Obsidian Shard in his hand seemed to grow stronger, pulsing rhythmically in sync with his heartbeat.

The Orichalcum Sword of Asterius hummed faintly at his side. Its hungry energy had quieted during the fight, but now it surged to life, crackling along the blade in jagged arcs of black and gold. The weapon felt heavier in Jaeden’s hand, its pull almost magnetic.

“What now?” Jaeden muttered, glancing at the sword as it began to vibrate.

Liandra turned, her gaze sharp as she took a step back. “Jaeden, your sword -it’s reacting to something.”

Before Jaeden could respond, the weapon seemed to take on a life of its own, drawing him toward the swirling remnants of the Shade Amalgam. The creature’s broken form, little more than shadowy mist and fragments of violet crystal, began to condense, spiraling toward the blade.

Jaeden’s grip tightened as a rush of power surged through the sword. The essence of the fallen creature was pulled into the weapon, the black-and-gold veins along its surface glowing brighter with each pulse.

Jaeden staggered slightly as the power flooded into him, his body feeling simultaneously weightless and crushingly heavy. The sensation was overwhelming, and his vision blurred as golden threads laced with black spiraled outward from the blade, weaving through the air like living tendrils.

“Jaeden,” Liandra’s voice cut through the haze. “Look. Your sword -it’s… changing.”

As Jaeden tried to steady himself, another surge coursed through him, sharper this time, almost electric. His chest tightened, his breath hitching as a familiar but rarely felt presence unfurled within him. It was as though the world itself shifted slightly, bending to his will. His luck -his absurd, unpredictable luck- kicked in.

Jaeden blinked rapidly, his HUD lighting up with a cascade of notifications. The sword’s energy crackled with renewed intensity, the tendrils of golden and black light entwining tighter around the swirling essence.

“Well, that’s interesting,” Jaeden muttered, his voice strained. “S.A.S.S.Y., care to explain?”

“Congratulations, Jaeden,” the S.A.S.S.Y. replied, her tone dripping with smug satisfaction. “Your improbable survival instincts have triggered another rare outcome. Enjoy it while it lasts.”

The spiraling energy condensed suddenly, snapping back into the sword with a sound like shattering glass. Jaeden fell to one knee, his sword still vibrating faintly as the notifications began to scroll across his vision.

Yes/No

Jaeden grimaced, his hand tightening on the Orichalcum Sword of Asterius. “Yeah, let’s do this,” he muttered, selecting Yes with a mental nudge.

The world around him pulsed as shadow and light collided. His defenses flared, the Dark Aether Ward wrapping around him while Shadebound Resilience rooted deep into his core. The two forces merged with a sudden snap, the oppressive energy of the chamber bending outward as if repelled by a new power radiating from Jaeden.

As the energy stabilized, Jaeden felt an almost liquid shield settle over him -a defense that was both shadow and light, perfectly attuned to the chaos he had just survived. The icy ache in his chest faded, replaced by a warmth that thrummed in time with his heartbeat.

“Any more surprises, Sassy?” he asked, his voice rasping with exhaustion.

“Nope! Congratulations,” the system quipped. “You’ve officially leveled up your ‘not dying’ game. Try not to ruin it.”

Jaeden smirked, his hand brushing the shimmering barrier as it pulsed faintly before vanishing from sight. “Not bad,” he muttered. “Not bad at all.”

Jaeden exhaled slowly, his pulse racing as the notifications faded. The weight of the sword felt different now -still heavy, but balanced, as if it had settled into its new power. He tested its grip, the blade thrumming faintly in response.

“Well,” he said, standing and sheathing the weapon. “That was… intense.”

The silence that followed was oppressive, broken only by the sound of Jaeden’s ragged breathing. He knelt on the ground, his hands trembling as the glow of the sword dimmed. The Obsidian Shard, now cool and quiet, rested in his grip, its power spent but not gone.

S.A.S.S.Y.: Shade Amalgam Defeated. XP Gained: 15,000. New Ability Unlocked – Aetheric Strike. New Item Acquired: Abyssal Prismata Core Fragment.

Liandra approached slowly, her shadow-threads dissipating into the air like smoke, as she tucked the Titanoboa Tooth Daggers into her belt. Her gaze lingered on Jaeden for a moment before shifting to the sword in his hand. “That sword of yours…” she began, her tone cautious. “It’s evolving. The abyssal energy did something to it.”

Jaeden tilted his head, studying the weapon. The curse that had once weighed heavily on it now felt tempered, as though the abyssal energy’s influence had balanced its chaotic energy. “Guess it’s warming up to me.”

“Or it’s waiting,” Liandra replied sharply, her tone laced with warning. “Be careful. A weapon like that… it has a will of its own.”

Jaeden nodded, though her words settled uncomfortably in the back of his mind. He sheathed the blade with deliberate care, the faint hum of its lingering energy pressing against his senses. “Noted. But for now, I’d say we earned ourselves a breather.”

Liandra’s lips twitched, a faint smile threatening to break her usual composure. “If you call fighting another day a breather.”

Jaeden rose to his feet, his body aching from the intensity of the fight. The chamber still echoed faintly with the aftermath, the air heavy with the fading remnants of the amalgam’s energy. He glanced at the fractured remains scattered across the floor, his eyes landing on a faintly glowing fragment amidst the rubble.

The Abyssal Prismata Core Fragment pulsed softly, its violet light subdued but steady. Jaeden bent down, scooping it up carefully. Its weight was strange, almost as though it carried a gravity of its own, pulling his thoughts toward the memory of the battle. The shard’s energy buzzed faintly in his hand, a whisper of power that hinted at untapped potential.

Liandra watched him, her gaze sharp and thoughtful. “You’re starting to understand, aren’t you?” she asked softly.

“Understand what?” Jaeden replied, slipping the fragment into his Null Gate.

“That nothing about this place is as simple as it seems. Every step forward costs something -whether you realize it or not.”

Jaeden shrugged, forcing a smirk. “I’ve got plenty of credit to spare.”

Liandra’s eyes narrowed, her gaze fixed on him. “You just absorbed the essence of an Abyssal Guardian. Do you have any idea what that means?”

“Nope,” Jaeden replied breezily. “But it felt important.”

Liandra’s expression darkened. “That sword of yours -it’s far more dangerous than you realize. It’s no longer just a weapon, Jaeden. It’s alive.”

“I figured that much out,” he said, flexing his hand as the lingering energy buzzed faintly through his veins. “But it’s not like I can just toss it into a volcano.”

“Perhaps you should,” she murmured, her voice carrying an edge of warning. “Or it may consume you.”

Jaeden didn’t reply immediately, his gaze drifting to the newly revealed passage at the far end of the chamber. “You’re not the first one to say that. Look don’t worry about it. I’ve got it under control.” He motioned towards the exit. “For now, I’ll take my chances. If this thing wants to eat me, it’ll have to wait in line.”

Liandra didn’t smile, but her tension seemed to ease slightly. “Let’s hope you’re right.”

He nodded, sheathing the blade. “Your words of caution are noted. So, what’s next? Another giant shadow monster? Maybe a nice, relaxing puzzle room?”

Liandra didn’t respond immediately, her expression unreadable. After a moment, she indicated the far end of the chamber, where a newly revealed passage beckoned, shrouded in shadows. “Come. This is far from over.”

Jaeden sighed, his smirk fading as he followed her gaze. The faint hum of the shard and the sword echoed in his mind like a quiet, sinister promise. “I’m starting to think nothing about this place ever ends.”

Liandra’s faint smile returned.

Jaeden sighed, rising to his feet. “You really know how to sell the adventuring life.” Jaeden gestured toward the passage with a mock flourish. “After you, oh shadow queen. Let’s see where this cursed scavenger hunt takes us next.”
