The System looked over the 343rd status page so far, with a frown. While he may have a great deal of time and patience, and usually any edits to the System were flawless, he was wondering whether he had gone wrong somewhere in coding the candidate search.
He’d already been at it for a decade, and something about all the results so far had tickled him wrong. He didn’t have a fleshy body, so most likely it was some subroutine at an unconscious level warning him of soemthing. He probabyl could have figured out what it was exactly, but it wasn’t that important.
He dismissed this one, then pulled up the second status this week.

This one pulled him up short. It was rare for the search criteria to ever suggest a member of one of the non-sapient races (a mere animal, so to speak), though this one had seemed to transcend its own background and become sapient on its own. And in quite an odd way too.
The System chewed at that for a moment, then starting pulling up recent detailed logs and running it through a visualizer.
It was not particularly promising. A reclusive hermit engaged in navel-gazing was not someone he thought could be easily controlled or even particularly interested in progresive growth. With a sigh and a note to tweak the search criteria again. He dismissed this status page and pulled up his third.
