Arial mused.
----------------------------------------
Indeed. Over the next few weeks, Myr and Arial from their own perspectives eavesdropped on the adults and gathered a general grasp of the situation. Arial had been reborn as Tanaka, a female [Catkin] of the wealthy, but non-noble, merchant family Ai in the city of Kirazura, though the broader geography of where that city lay remained unclear to them. Myr had been reborn as Cota, a female [Human] enslaved to the Ai family and intended to be trained as a [Lady in Waiting] to Mistress Tanaka Ai.
This of course was horrifying to Tanaka ◮, who had bonded herself to Myr, and hilarious to Cota ◐ because their public roles were somewhat flipped from their private roles. But, at least they were together, which was all that they could really ask for.
Or, they would be. Eventually. For now, both were barely able to gurgle, let alone crawl or walk, and so physical proximity was a no-go. They agreed they had no interest in upsetting the natural order by magically inducing quicker growth; as it was, they would already be precocious, though not [Precocious]. And, at least, they could still talk with each other.
Then, finally, after three months, with Tanaka the [Catkin] beginning to crawl, and Cota the [Human] just barely sitting up by herself, Cota was brought to the main house to meet her future charge. There was quite a bit of cooing—at least on the Ai family’s part—at how well the two got along. Tanaka ◮ for one was ecstatic that the physical separation had ended, and was crawling in circles around the stationary Cota ◐ and occasionally snuggling her. Cota on the other hand, while finding Tanaka amazingly cute, was just a little bit peeved.
----------------------------------------
The years passed, and Tanaka and Cota were playmates. And while Tanaka ◮ was always bigger, faster, and stronger, Cota ◐ grew abnormally fast for a [Human], though this was largely ignored due to the juxtaposition between the two and Cota limiting herself to remaining smaller than Tanaka, even if she was larger than normal babies.
However, at three years of age, the playtime was dialed back significantly. Tanaka began to receive tutoring befitting a merchant’s first daughter and second child. Cota, meanwhile, was first taken to the local Temple, where she received a [Blessing].
Ding!
> [Catkin Life] (rare): You find yourself bonded to an [Catkin], but your longer lifespan will only bring pain. Sacrifice your later years to grow up faster now.
Well, that’s really freaking disgusting. I mean, it works for me, but I can’t believe they pushed that onto a child without even asking!
With that, Cota found herself maturing even faster, and without the need to use [Magic Growth]. At four, she began to receive training as a [Maid] as part of a longer program to train her as a [Lady in Waiting], though of course neither Class would be available to her for many years.
A few more years passed. Tanaka announced she received System access to her astonished family. In such good cheer were the Ais that a massive celebration was held for the earliest awakening in the family in six generations. Even the family’s servants and slaves had a good time or, at least, were seen to have one.
Only a few months later, Cota announced her own System access, for which she received compliments from the Ais, though her birth family was ecstatic. When inquired as to her Skills, Cota was a bit more forthcoming than she might have been otherwise, especially since many of the Skills she had carried over from prior lives were appropriate for a [Maid]. Impressed, the Ai family soon had Cota attending Tanaka, even without the [Maid] Class.
Now that Cota was attending to Tanaka, she could sleep in a servant’s room adjacent to Tanaka’s en suite. Which as two adolescent girls, they abused with frequent sleepovers. They were discovered once by the head maid, who began berating Cota, though Tanaka quickly interjected that Cota was her lady in waiting and had been fulfilling her orders. At that, the head maid in turn informed Tanaka’s mother, who in turn scolded her daughter on propriety, refusing to listen the latter’s well-thought-out reasoning that her bed was cold, her lady cheap, and that she certainly had not invited any boys. That line of reason earned her yet another line of scolding from her mother and all pleas regarding Cota’s status with the family went unheeded.
----------------------------------------
A year later, Tanaka ◮ was doing some research in the family library, attempting to pinpoint where Masami ◐’s village had been, when Cota urgently messaged her.
Cota had barely gotten the message across when Tanaka began quickly—but delicately, as a [Lady] would—moving through the house towards Cota and her older brother. She barged through the last door loudly, verbally berated Cota for not being there when she needed her, and dragged her by the ear away from her brother, who fortunately, was a touch slow in the head.
Tanaka responded.
----------------------------------------
Finally, Tanaka ◮ announced that she was eligible for a Class—and omitted the fact she’d been sitting on it for a year. To her family, she told her the redacted version: She was eligible for [Lady] and [Lady Gardener].
To Cota ◐, there was the whole truth:
> Congratulations! You are now eligible to select a Class. A Class represents who you are and what you do, and will help define the rest of your life. Classes can provide extra attribute points, Traits, and Skills. Classes may be leveled using experience.

Cota sighed over the connection.
Indeed, neither the Ai family nor Cota’s family had an inkling of the monsters in their midst. While Tanaka’s level was nearly double that of the cat’s cream of her generation, Cota’s ridiculous XP multiplier meant that she had gone all the way to Level 39, evolving from [Human] to [High Human] (for it had the least physical changes), and picking up the [Speedy Speedster] Trait that Arial ◮ had grabbed last life.

As the two walked to the parlor in search of the seniormost members of the Ai family, Cota asked Tanaka for her input.
----------------------------------------
Cota hummed to herself as she carefully reviewed her Status. <20x>
----------------------------------------
Damn, Cota ◐ thought to herself one day while reviewing her Status. Picking up all those stats boosting traits last life was expensive but worth it. My HP should be 1,250, but its 33,247. Less impressive, MP should be 9,385 and instead is 49,555, but that’s still a 5x multiplier. Gods I’m scary.
----------------------------------------
At some point, Mistress Tanaka ◮ and her maid ◐ visited the Kirazura city library. They spent a week reviewing the geography of the Breibone continent, ancient history of the [Catkin], System history among the [Ucarhi] and [Catkin], etc., trying to find Masami ◐. They had no such luck.
They did find two oblique and likely unintentional references. A millennium ago, an elven [Scholar] had traveled to the [Ucarhi]-speaking tribes of the [Catkin], who he knew were stone age primitives that had barely advanced to agriculture, in the hopes of creating a written form of their language and thus earn a prestigious Trait. After months of journey, he was disappointed to find that [Ucarhi] had a writing system already in place: Primitive, slightly incomplete, strangely [Human], but workable and in use by the [Catkin]. After mastering the extent written system, he subsequently began filling in the missing pieces and received an unexpected notification:
> You have received a Trait: [Ucarhi – Creator of Written Ucarhi, Elven Variant] (unique): Taking the extant version of Written Ucarhi, you have added additional components based on various elvish languages in order to create a unique and consistent variant.
Unfortunately for him, he received no attribute bonus for the Trait. Disappointed, he returned to his home on the other side of the continent, leaving a record of his journey on a few scrolls at the local elvish library. Eventually, as the [Catkin] developed their own civilization, [Catkin] scholars on a cultural exchange rediscovered this written account and brought copies with them back to their homelands. Though they themselves did not know the origin of [Written Ucarhi], the elf’s account was the oldest known written account on the subject.
It was not until five centuries later, after semi-regular travel was established across the wide, but shallow sea between the Breibone and Eurial continents, that the mystery was solved. A traveling [Linguist] from Eurial had arrived in Breibone to document all the languages of the continent and was shocked to see [Ucarhi] use the familiar alphabet of [Ostesh], an ancient and (very rare) language used by the original human civilization upon the Eurial continent. Upon further inquiry, he found that written [Ucarhi] had looked like this for centuries at least, but that they themselves did not know the origin of the script.
Thereupon, the [Linguist] published academic papers extensively in Breibone before leaving and in Eurial upon his return, noting the extreme similarities between the alphabets of [Ostesh] and [Ucarhi]. Given the extreme hazards involved in crossing the ocean, and that the ancient [Catkin] lived in the center of the Breibone continent, the idea that a traveler made the journey alive seemed unlikely in the extreme. Nonetheless, it remained the commonly accepted theory that, by some fluke, a lost traveler from Eurial to Breibone was somehow the origin of the written language.
Tanaka and Cota found it all hilarious.
----------------------------------------
Sometime later, Mistress Tanaka ◮ and Cota ◐ found themselves on a carriage bound for another city. The Ai family’s review of Tanaka’s local suitors had been going poorly, and Mistress Tanaka had been invited to the city of Binghai to meet a potential suitor from the Takamoto family who ruled there. Cota had just about dozed off in the carriage when there was a commotion outside with their guard. Tanaka espied out the window, then turned to Cota. “Cota, dear, would you mind lending the guard a hand?”
Cota yawned, then nodded sleepily, “[Grasping Roots].”
This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.
“[Druid]! [Druid]!” the call rose from the guard outside. “Find the caster! Stephenson, I want eyes all around us.”
Those few bandits not ensnared were quick to retreat in the face of magic, while the guard quickly cut down the bandits who remained. A few were interrogated, but other than the general knowledge that they were paid a sum to watch this road and ambush this carriage specifically, they knew nothing about their employer.
“Mistress Tanaka,” the [Guard Captain] began. “I must insist we return to the Ai estate.”
“Oh, whatever for, Captain,” Tanaka replied slyly. “You handled those men easily enough, and they were quite numerous, if low leveled.”
“That is true Mistress, however, it is apparent that either you or the Ai family were specifically targeted by these bandits. Further, we have been unable to locate the [Druid] who intervened.”
“The magic helped your men did it not? Did it not attack our enemies? Clearly the [Druid] favors us, whoever she may be.”
“Still, I must insist that we return, Mistress.”
“Do not worry about it, [Guard Captain]. We proceed onward. That’s an order.”
----------------------------------------
“The Baron himself is my suitor?” Tanaka asked the [Maid] provided her, more for familiarity with the grounds of the estate than for any of Tanaka’s personal needs, which were still handled by Cota.
They had arrived without further incident to Binghai, and upon arrival to the Takamoto estate, were first escorted to guest rooms and then a parlor for their first meeting.
“Yes, Mistress,” the [Maid] replied, “that is correct.”
----------------------------------------
The Baron was actually quite young, perhaps only a few years after his Class selection. Moreover, he was fit, unpretentious, and monstrously attractive.
<*giggle* I think he has a higher CHA than you do.>
----------------------------------------
And so after a splendid visit to Binghai, Tanaka ◮ and Cota ◐ found themselves in their carriage heading back.
<[Reincarnator] really screws with your mind. When you only have one life to live, you’re eager to jump at the first opportunities you really have. But for us? We plan Skill and Trait acquisitions to benefit future lives. Who else does that? We’re disappointed by any Class less than (very rare). Who else does that? And what could be the happiest moments in a,> Cota paused for a moment searching for the right word,
<…Crap.>
----------------------------------------
Actually, Cota ◐ was hardly more experienced in romantic matters. Even those were largely relegated to casual affairs as a man, even though Cota had been female more often than not.
And so, upon their return and Tanaka ◮’s announcement to the Ai family of her approval of Baron Rin Takamoto, Tanaka and Cota went to their respective mothers for their respective species’ discussions of the birds and bees. Tanaka though found her mother’s education thoroughly lacking, and so quickly starting going through every aunt and older cousin she had, nearly a dozen of them, for more information. Cota, on the other hand, had an excellent chat with her mother but, given Cota’s role to her Mistress, was then summoned by the [Headmaid] and two others to discuss [Catkin] birds and bees and her role as [Maid] in assisting Mistress Tanaka through the stress of being with and satisfying a man.
----------------------------------------
The wedding went off swimmingly and they lived happily ever after. Rin turned out to be an even more considerate and loving husband than either Tanaka ◮ or Cota ◐ could have anticipated, and while nothing could surpass the bond between them, Tanaka found her initial infatuation maturing into an abiding love for the man. Cota in turn respected him as a good man, husband, and lord.
Within two years, Tanaka and Rin found themselves blessed with a daughter. While a separate [Nursemaid] was brought in, Cota in the course of her duties found herself caring for the child on a regular basis as well. To her surprise, this stirred something within herself and she soon found herself accepting the romantic interests of the young slave [Human] [Ferrier] who worked at the Takamoto estate (or at least as much as her duties allowed her to). And so, when Tanaka and Rin soon found themselves blessed with a son, Cota in turn gave birth to a daughter.
Tanaka had just given birth to a third child, a daughter, when the [Ferrier] was killed by a horsekick to the head and Cota found herself a single mother. Her grief eventually passed, and Cota soon found herself partnered with a freeman [Human] [Carpenter], a few years her younger, and Cota’s daughter soon had a half-brother while Tanaka gave birth to a fourth child and third daughter.
The years rolled on.
----------------------------------------
By now, both women—with the shortened lifespans of [Catkin]—were firmly into middle age. Tanaka’s two eldest—as fast living [Catkin]—had already Classed, with the eldest even beginning to invite suitors for her hand. On the other hand, Cota’s eldest—proceeding as a normal human—was still several years away from Classing.
The Ucarhi Kingdom was facing an incursion from the neighboring Orcish State, and the Baron was to take a battalion of soldiers to the frontlines. Tanaka spoke slowly and deliberately.
<…We’ll be separated you know. He won’t even remotely entertain you coming, not with the children.>
<*sigh* The latter I suppose. Telling a [Baron] (Level 29), that his wife’s maid is actually an [Arcane Battle Maid] (Level 58) might be too much for him to handle.>
----------------------------------------
Rin was not terribly pleased to be informed that his wife’s chambermaid was a [Magical Battle Maid] (Level 30), though he became less disgruntled when Tanaka explained that both Cota’s existence and her secrecy were meant as anti-assassination measures by the Ai family, both for Tanaka herself as well as Rin and the children. Of course, that “revelation” made him even less comfortable taking Cota with him, but Tanaka insisted, pointing out that a [Baron] needed to take support staff along with him anyway. Eventually, Rin relented and replaced one of his existing servants with Cota.
And so, a week later, Baron Rin Takamoto, Cota, and the rest of the Baron’s entourage, left the city of Binghai with a force of 500 soldiers for a four week journey to the frontlines and a six month tour of duty.
It was not an easy journey, but Cota grew to be a bright spot for the soldiers’ morale. Though Cota made sure that the needs of the Baron came first, a few daily casts of [Good Morning to You] and [Vigorous Chores] on the soldiers did much to improve their welfare and they knew it. Actually, given Cota’s ridiculous mana pool, it was more than a few daily casts, but nobody was counting. And if she mixed in a few [Bless Sapients], well, she wasn’t telling anybody that either.
They were four days from the front, when a scout hurriedly returned and made a beeline for the Baron.
“Sire,” the [Fleeted Ranger] whispered to prevent eavesdropping by the soldiers, “there’s an [Orc] army two hours ahead, well inside the front lines. They outnumber us 2 to 1, and, if I had to wager, they are veterans from the frontlines.”
While the battles of many organized armies could be said to be long, drawn out affairs with relatively low fatality rates, when two forces did collide intending to annihilate the other, the rapid exchange of XP as soldiers killed each other, leveled up, and they in turn were killed, could cause what was known as “power-leveling.” Fifty thousand XP could easily take a barely-adult [Soldier] (Level 17) to (Level 33) together with the concomitant evolution into [Lieutenant] or—less imaginatively—[Veteran Soldier]. Plus there were the Race evolutions to consider. Because of that, veterans from fierce fighting—and especially after any massacres—could be formidable to face and the Baron knew that.
“Damn,” the Baron cursed. “The frontlines must have nearly fallen apart for this to happen. Are they camped out or are they on the move?”
“Camped out, sire.”
Hmm, the Baron thought pondering the news as Cota pulled out maps of the area, anticipating his needs. If they have veteran scouts, we may already be discovered. Surprise attack questionable. Running would do no good if they are veterans. Favorable grounds then? The next valley over? The Baron thought, tapping a finger to the map. Yes, that should work nicely.
----------------------------------------
The battle did not go well.
Within a few minutes of engagement, a tenth of the Baron’s forces were killed, with perhaps half the number of deaths on the other side. Fifteen minutes in, and the formations of the Baron’s soldiers were crumbling. Though Cota advised the Baron on large-scale magical actions of the enemy, and occasionally threw a [Fireball]—I wonder if I could singlehandedly cast [Siege Fireball]? Need to pick that up—the battle was rapidly turning precarious, though not entirely lost.
The disabling blow that came was one the [Orcs] had repeated many times in the last weeks to great success. A dozen long range archers of high level and with great Skills simultaneously fired shots at the head command of the Baron’s forces in a decapitating strike.
Embued with a great many powerful Skills, the shot at the Baron broke through his own defensive Skills and armor, punching a hole through his abdomen, though missing any major arteries. Nonetheless, it was likely a lethal wound, even if the main body of the [Orc] forces never made it that far.
Embued with its own mix of powerful skills, the arrow shot at Cota nicked the skin at her throat and then exploded. This confused the [Orc] archer to no end for, even if she was a (Level 60) [Human] with a physical high-CON build, such a shot should have caused serious injury, if not short term lethality. And, indeed, Cota registered that it had caused about three thousand damage, though that was only a handful of percentage points of her HP and she would recover that fully within the hour, even if she didn’t heal herself which, of course, she did immediately.
As to the rest of the shots, another half dozen high officers fell around her. Though she was sprayed with blood as the command of the army died around her, she remained unfazed and, a moment later, was clean, thanks to [Battlefield Prim] and [Battlefield Proper].
Nonetheless, glancing around at the [Orcs’] successful decapitation of the Baron’s forces, Cota decided it was time to keep her promise to Tanaka. With a quick pulse of healing to make sure he wasn’t bleeding out, Cota slung the Baron over her shoulders and beat a hasty retreat into the surrounding forest. After an hour of travel, alone now, she set the Baron down and saw to his injuries more carefully.
An itch at her throat had her absently heal herself again, but when it persisted without healing, she whipped out a [Mirror]. Though the wound did not bleed, it was blackened and the surrounding flesh was already graying as she pulled up her Status.
> [Poisoned]: You have been struck by a vicious poison developed by certain [Orc] [Apothecaries] in their recent wars. Temporary Trait: Expires in 70.7 hours or upon death. Gross damage: 24,224 / hour. [Poison Resistance IV] detected. HP Regen inhibited by poison. HP Regen: 348 / hour. Net damage: 1,166 / hour = 24,225 / hour (gross damage) * (1/16) [Poison Resistance IV] – 348 (HP Regen offset). Seek specialized care to cure the poison or counteract the damage until [Poisoned] Trait elapses.
That wasn’t good. The arrow she was struck with must have been poisoned and, despite her [Poison Resistance IV], was strong enough that it was still afflicting her. She’d be dead in two days at that rate—the Baron would have died within fifteen minutes—though perhaps if she rested and used some of her Skills, she’d be able to outlast it. Then again, staying here in the woods so near the battlefield was just asking for trouble.
No, she thought, shaking her head, I have a promise to keep and if I move fast enough, hopefully there’ll be time to get an antidote. At least the poisoned arrow didn’t hit him.
The Baron was still out of it. The arrow he was shot with must have had some Skill that extracted his internal energies. It was almost like he was exhausted and starving, and she ended up pouring [Divine Lay on Hands] on him just to close the wound up. But despite knitting the wound closed, he was unlikely to wake soon.
Coaxing some soft fruit out of a nearby bush with her nature Skills, she forced a fruity slurry down his throat to at least get something in his stomach to restore his energy. And, as a maid, spent just a minute tidying him up before leaving.
With the Baron settled, Cota slung him up on her shoulders again and took off for home—even as the poison continued to attack her—using every Skill and Trait at her disposal to move swiftly. [Firm Purchase] [Air Resistance] [Forest Stride] [Ent Walk] [Ent Stride] and then as much MP as she could maintain into her body stat boosting skills. For thirty-six straight hours, she moved through the forest like the swiftest of birds, falling into a trance-like state.
Finally, she emerged from the forest a few kilometers from the Takamoto estate. Exhausted, she rang the [Dinner Bell], and seeing the house guards moving out to meet her, promptly collapsed unconscious with the Baron on top of her.
