Kuroxet were hacked down in droves as Kal cut a line of carnage through the horde. He had not managed to finish his kuroxet progress with the already wounded slaughterers but there were still enough among the horde that it could be done.

The kuroxet acid was a problem. Kal’s cheaper Wrathful Regeneration was perfect at keeping up with the few claws that could break his skin, his endurance high enough above the majority of the demons to prevent them from harming him much. But their acid continued to eat at his skin even after he had regenerated from the original wound.

His entire body was burning with the corrosive liquid but all he could do was ignore it while he hacked his way towards the next slaughterer. He did not have to do it for long, the slaughterers fought against his fear aura better than most considering their higher level, and charged toward him as well.

Leaving the felflames alone had been useful, their attacks did almost nothing to his body due to his greater fire resistance. Only their strongest attacks warmed his skin enough to hurt. The useful part was the fact that the rest of the demons were clearly less resistant and the felflames had no qualms about bombarding their opposition in the process of attacking him.

There had been a few times where Kal had stumbled or was swamped by a few too many stronger kuroxet at once for the felflames to blast him with more fire and imps that most of the kuroxet had simply vanished into plumes of ash.

Kal had his Slayer’s Intent locked onto one of the felflame conjurers. It had been the highest level demon he could see. It fed him only a trickle of wrath, but that was all he needed to keep a decent flow of wrath while he hacked through the kuroxet along with the reduction of cost while all the demons around him were under the effects of his fear aura.

Two slaughterers leaped over their weaker kin in a flurry of claws, their speed still annoying to deal with even after the additional points Kal had gained but the difference was a lot closer than before. He parried the first, catching the whole demon on his sword. It held onto his sword and tried to rip it from his grasp but his strength was far too high for that. In one smooth motion, Kal twisted and brought his sword and slaughterer around to knock the second slaughterer from the air, knocking it into more of its weaker variants and leaving the first disemboweled.

Several smaller kuroxet struck while Kal was fending off the slaughterers but as their claws scraped down his back through the shadow’s cloak, Kal sent Flames of Wrath back down their arms leaving them writhing in agony.

The two slaughterers recovered quickly, tumbling like acrobats over and around the other kuroxet. Then they were gone, behind a dozen base kuroxet that stumbled forward, their eyes widening as they were suddenly under Kal’s gaze. These base variants that once gave him so much trouble were nothing now, even though these were between levels ten and thirty their agility and strength weren’t enough to harm him at all.

Killing so many so quickly was dangerous though, killing that dozen had brought him up to nearly three thousand wrath in a matter of moments. Bringing him closer to reaching his wrath limit. Kal’s birthright didn’t care in the least but the small piece of control Kal had while using Wrath Incarnate was cautious. But right now the best way to dump wrath was to use Wrath Incarnate and Wrathful Regeneration, making the fight a deadly balance of accepting some wounds while using every skill he had to vent wrath.

The slaughterers reappeared but this time there were two more, each of them beginning to glow in Kal’s mana sight. This time something was different, they didn’t stop and give him an easy target. Instead acid began to pour from their mouths and the ends of their claws and they turned on their weaker kin. If it wasn’t a blood bath before, it was now. Each kuroxet slain wisps of mana fell into the bodies of their slayer followed by a sudden physical growth.

Sneering, Kal targeted the closest slaughterer, grappling it to prevent its sudden spree. Kal took a nasty gash to his abdomen which immediately began to burn with the potent acid slaughterers. In his grasp the slaughterer did last long once Kal snapped its neck but weary of the last time he killed one in close quarters he tossed it towards some nearby kuroxet as it detonated, coating the area with its acid.

Annoyingly even the lesser kuroxet were pretty resistant to the acid but the more potent slaughterer acid was enough to blind several of them and slow them enough to not get in the way of his next target. He dumped the free points he gained during the fight into agility to get every ounce of speed he could, even his birthright wanted the slaughterers dead before anything else.

The three remaining slaughterers were getting stronger and faster by the second as they continued to turn their own horde into shredded meat, their flesh creating piles of slowly dissolving refuse.

Kal felt the extra agility get boosted once more by his Wrath Incarnate and he felt as if he just barely caught up to the slaughterers in speed. Maybe even a little faster with the amplification from Wrath Incarnate.

He was about to reach his next target as he turned away from a new melting pile of meat but the mana pulsing in their chests seemed to stabilize as one last wisp of mana merged with it. With that pulse, the slaughterer's growth paused, its bulking to the point it was nearly as big as Kal despite their normal thin frames. Then unison all three came at him at once.

Kal wasn’t sure if they had lost speed or if his extra agility had made a massive difference but they seemed a lot slower after their growth, but what they lost in speed they had gained in strength. It was too bad Kal’s strength was one of his highest.

With the difference in speed now gone Kal easily parried one series of blows with his sword and ducked a second. It was only the third’s attacks that were hard to deal with but he repaid each wound he received from the third with a gout of crimson flame, slowly burning away its flesh.

The felflames had finally realized their attacks had absolutely no effect and had begun to move into a circle, probably planning some kind of empowered strike or technique like the slaughterers possessed, Kal ignored them, his birthright steering his body around the constant onslaught of attacks and counters. When his wrath began to get low he would leap away, forcing the slaughterers to follow him as he hacked through another dozen weaklings.

Even though he was controlling the flow of the battle for now he could sense more demons entering his fear aura, his killing sight almost blinding him to anything but the red shapes around him.

As one of the slaughterers leaped after him in an attempt to keep up the offensive Kal changed tactic and spun as he landed, not giving the slaughterer time to land he bisected in diagonally from hip to shoulder, its corpse flying apart to either side of him. He was coated in an irritating amount of acid for the maneuver but dealing with the final two just got a lot easier.

Kal stuck the serpent fang into his cloak and tore an arm from the dead slaughterer as he leaped away again, sinking his teeth into its flesh, Wrath Incarnate enjoying the brutality of it.

Kal discarded the arm as the others arrived and parried with his sword and in the same motion hacked through the second’s arm, once again spraying acid all over himself. He growled in response but the pain was distant. The unwounded leaped away before attempting to flank him while the wounded slaughterer staggered and then flew backward as Kal slammed his foot into its chest, shattering its ribs and likely its spine.

Kal turned back to the first, dropped his sword, and caught the kuroxet by both of its arms. Its eyes widened as it realized its fate but Kal doubted it knew what was coming. He slammed his head into the face, and with the crunch of bones its head fell back and Kal bit down on its neck and tore out the majority of its throat.

More acid sprayed but the notification he had been expecting finally came.

The kuroxet around him were suddenly rendered almost no threat at all. His wrath urged him to continue killing but after killing the slaughterers his wrath was dangerously high so he shrugged off the power of Wrath Incarnate deactivating it for a time, to allow him to resist the urge while he allowed himself time to fully heal.

Even without the amplifications of his stats, the weaker kuroxet were easily ignored, most of them had lost their will to fight as the last of their most powerful kin lay crippled, its body utterly broken and barely alive. Not that there were many left, the slaughterers had dealt with almost as many as him.

The felflame conjurers continued their circle ability but Kal simply ignored them as he walked over to the last slaughterer and now that his wrath had dropped to safe levels he slammed his foot down hard on its still intact skull.

The slaughterers dealt with Kal and scanned the horde around him. There were less than fifty of the weak kuroxet now but others had finally made it close enough to be a problem, “Great more of those fucking gorefiends,” Kal really didn’t want to fight those things, and there were a lot more of them this time. He sighed as he retrieved his sword and checked its edge while backhanding a kuroxet who had finally got the guts to attack him.

The Edge of Malice was completely gone, “I wish I had paid more attention to that,” he muttered. At least his birthright had gone after the slaughterers as he had hoped. Kal conjured another edge and turned towards the going gorefiends, his gaze running over the gore-covered terrain. A flash of memory rose up in his mind and an unintended expression fell across his face before vanishing.

Did I just smirk?
