Kal’s gaze moved across the fallen people as his soul raged. As the demon ranks thinned his soul he had begun to lose focus. His mind drifted to slaughter everything in the area. His ability to take control and deactivate Wrath Incarnate seemed weaker as the people around him moaned in agony and fear.

Kal had known it would be like this but why was it worse? Every fiber of his being urged him to kill them all. His soul slammed against his core to try and urge him further but Kal clamped his will on his thoughts and deactivated Wrath Incarnate.

The moment the skill ended he felt a wave of revulsion, “No not them, never them. You aren’t a monster.” Even as he thought the words his soul continued to rage. Kal pushed the thoughts aside, it always raged.

It was only after the skill had deactivated that he realized he had been staring down someone he recognized. The pale fragile form of Melisia lay prone staring into his face, she paled further as he frowned but he tried to summon a smile like he did when he spotted Dalen but he knew it looked forced the moment it faded.

Kal kept his Eyes of the Slayer and mana sight active as he walked over to her and looked around at the abyssal mana now filling this strange place. It was nowhere near as dense as it was in the abyss but it behaved just as aggressively.

“Ka-k-Kalum? H-h-” Melisia tried to say more but her head spun and her eyes flickered. Kal looked closer with combined sights and saw the abyssal boring deeper into her chest. Now that he was closer he also saw something else, he recognized it immediately but frowned further as he inspected it.

It was her shining blue core but tendrils of abyssal mana were wrapped so title around it that it was being slowly deformed. Tiny white hairline cracks had formed over its surface, just like those that had begun to appear when he reached tier one.

They didn’t have long. Kal reached down and threw her over his shoulder, she didn’t resist at all and Kal felt her go limp as he moved toward the next person he saw. Leo sat propped up by his sword. Blood poured from his eyes and nose like the rest but Kal could see that he was holding out slightly better than the rest. Likely purely because of a high endurance score.

“Kalum are you we-” he shook his head and grimaced, “Nevermind, it is good to see you alive.”

Kal’s soul flared again but he stamped it down before he replied, “The same to you,” Kal lowered Melisia to the ground next to Leo, “Do you have a healing skill?”

Leo nodded but frowned, “Yes but this foreign mana blocked us from using them and drained us of our own mana.”

“Damn it… I will have to think of something without her help then,” Kal focused on Melisia’s core. He needed to remove the abyssal mana but the moment he did so the atmospheric mana would just move in again. He looked up at the still raging mana storm above and with his mana sight he could clearly see the abyssal mana streaming in from above.

Looking at it again reminded him that if he could get through so could Vorayx. He could arrive any moment, why he hadn’t already was probably some kind of time distortion problem. When Fyborh had shown him this place it had at times both moved faster and slower than his resting place.

“I’ll be back I want to look at Dalen’s core as well.”

Leo looked shocked, “What? Is that what you were looking at?”

Kal didn’t respond and sped over to Dalen. His friend looked even worse than before and his core was in a far worse state than even Melisia’s. A man lying next to him died as he inspected his friend.

Even though it would only be temporary Kal focused his mind. He wasn’t even sure it would work but the description of Unbound Will pushed him to try.

Unbound Will [Spirit Bound]

Reaching beyond one’s shell requires will far beyond the capabilities of a tier 1 entity but a Slayer of Fate is bound by no such rules. Forge beyond yourself, Soul Smith. Rend the threads of all, Slayer of Fate.

His siphoning state settled in almost instantly, far faster than it had done before and he placed his hand over Dalen’s core and pulled. The dark purple mana stubbornly clung to his friend's core but after a moment it slowly began to be drawn away.

Kal wrath rose as the abyssal mana was converted. It was much easier than he expected but the moment he pulled his hand away and Dalen’s eyes flickered open more abyssal mana began to bore into his body.

“Kal?..” Dalen said, his voice a mix of pain and joy, “Trust you to be the one to rescue me in the middle of my quest to retrieve y-” his words cut off as the mana entering his chest accelerated.

Kal was happy to hear his friend's voice but his thoughts were elsewhere. Could he siphon it all? Or at least enough to save the people here? He didn’t know but what else could he do? What? drag them into the abyss with him just so they could boil alive there as their cores exploded faster?

But what about his cores? Kal looked at the near-constant notification he had been ignoring since he created his second core and frowned.

Error due to presence of a unique resource and the manual forging of a tier 1 core you must provide the necessary resources:

Wrath provided: 192845/256760

It was far closer to being finished than he had realized. He must have provided a large amount while using Slayer’s Apathy during the last wave of the trial. What was in the dying people and the surrounding air would no doubt push beyond that limit.

If he had time he might have been able to make a third core but no doubt that had consequences he wasn’t aware of as well.

He would have to break his core and gods only knew how long it would take for his second core to fully complete once he did. With his soul the way it was now he would kill everyone and everything here or they would kill him assuming they could stand again.

But he already knew he was going to do it anyway so he decided to stop wasting time, “Sorry about that… Look I’m going to try and give you time to run. I don’t know if it will work but if it does get everyone moving as far away from this place as you can. The abyssal mana is coming from the storm but I might be able to slow it down.”

Kal stood and left Dalen on the ground, moving towards the spot where he had dropped Vorayx’s arm.

“Kal… Wait…” Dalen gasped as the mana continued to burn its way into his body again.

Kal didn’t turn back but said, “Don’t worry I’ll be right behind you.”

Dalen kept yelling something but Kal stopped listening as he concentrated on what he needed to do. As he walked he pulled out the concentration array from his amulet and when he arrived at the arm he arranged them in a circle large enough for him to sit in.

He picked up the severed arm and ripped the ring that had been his bane for the better part of a month from the still-warm limb. Kal slid it onto his own finger and a sudden spike in awareness told him his attributes had returned.

Then he received a notification.

Kal tossed the arm aside and sat within the concentration array with his hands on his knees. The abyssal mana immediately began to swirl around him as part of its flow concentrated on him. Soon a vortex of dark abyssal mana spun above him and when felt its increasing density slow he began to pull.

His wrath climbed as he drew more and more mana into his body, his skin burned as it always did but the addition of the array made burning worse. But it wasn’t enough the abyssal mana washed over him before moving on to continue wreaking havoc. He needed to draw more.

Kal expanded his perception, reaching out further with his mind to grasp the column of mana but after only inches away from his body a weight fell across his mind. More mana poured into his body before circling his core as its color turned the crimson red of his wrath.

As his wrath neared its limit he activated the switch and it began to pour into his second core but still, he was barely affecting the flow of the abyssal mana, “Dammit! I need to absorb more!”

But how? He could reach further than a hand from his body. The mana poured into his chest as fast as he could grasp it but he could only grasp so much. He needed to either speed up the intake or widen the area he could draw from.

Kal focused his mind on his body and the point where the mana entered his skin. It moved lethargically once it made it in, slow and unguided. Then an idea struck him and he was surprised he had tried doing it before. He had assumed that he could only truly work with wrath but his affinities said otherwise.

Kal began to weave strands of intellect and will into a channel from his chest to his core space. Soul Forge activated on its own accord as he raced to weave the channel as quickly as he could.

The threads spun into being faster than anything he had soul-forged before and after only moments the first channel was in place and the amount of abyssal mana increased dramatically as the slow-moving wisps of unconverted mana began to dart down the channel. As it entered his core space he felt his soul flare as it sped up its conversion speed. The mental pressure of unbound skills was noticeable immediately but Kal ignored it as he continued working.

It was faster but still not fast enough Kal didn’t stop with just one channel. He moved along the dividing line of his body and the outside world and continued weaving channels in a tree-like structure every branch expanding out to one of his limbs or over to cover more of his torso as he worked and as every new branch was completed the burning of wrath conversion grew to new heights.

Kal gritted his teeth as his wrath climbed faster and faster. Kal’s mana sight registered a flash of blue light from behind him as a young fighter's core shattered. Then another, then two more in quick succession.

He had to go faster.
