Chapter 73: Ungrateful

Chapter 73: Ungrateful

Day 10

Tiffany was tired of Sam. He didn’t believe she was the queen. It seemed everyone hated her which made her hate them more. They even gave her hard bread and told her to be grateful. AS IF!

It was evening when Sam arrived in the city Point. He had a friend Sparrow who he went to see for help.

Sam walked into the old building.

“May I help you?”

The familiar voice of his friend asked

“Yes, old friend. I need help.” Sam said.

He removed his hat and the scarf from around Tiffany’s head.

“Sam, why are you back? If discovered you and I will die.” Sparrow said.

“I have this woman. She claims to be the queen and I have no idea who she really is. But I thought maybe you would be able to help her find her family if she lives near the castle.”

“You have done right to bring her here. I will take care of her.” Sparrow said.

“Thank you.” Sam said.

“Do you need to place to stay for the night?” Sparrow asked “I have food that is warm and a spare cot.”

“Thank you. I will stay with you.”

Tiffany rolled her eyes.

“Sparrow, so this is where you have been hiding.”

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“I have not been hiding. I have a place for you as well if you would like?” Sparrow offered Tiffany.

“Just take me home.” She demanded.

“It is late. Let me get that food.”

And so, Sparrow left them.

“I know this is not what you want but Sparrow is a good man. You can trust him. He will be good to you.” Sam reassured her.

“I know him.” Tiffany replied annoyed.

“Well then you will know what I say is true.”

“He helps the enemies of the queen. My enemies.” She added.

“Like me?” Sam asked.

“You are pardoned.” She stated.

Sam shook his head.

“If you keep calling yourself the queen someone will kill you. Please just use your name.”

Sparrow came back with a bowl of warm soup.

They sat and ate.

Well Tiffany played with hers and nibbled at it.

Secretly she was very hungry. But she didn’t want them to see her eating such gross food.

“Rumor has it a price has been put on the queen’s life. Some say they have seen her head. A woman from the town said a woman came into the shop and put the queen’s head on the table.”

“What?!?” Tiffany objected.

“If the queen was really dead the peace conference would have been called off.” Sam said wisely.

“Peace conference!” Tiffany blurted.

“An inn keeper said the queen was staying in his inn unguarded. So, men rallied together to kill her. But in their drunken state she got away.”

“How did he know it was the queen?” Sam asked.

“She had brilliant red hair.” Sparrow answered.

“The lost heir?” Tiffany said as if someone had punched her in the stomach “Can’t be. It’s a hoax. A rumor meant to stir rebellion.” Her voice was weak.

The men continued talking.

“Is it possible it was for money he said such things?” Sam asked.

“If he did, his place was destroyed for it. But when I saw him, I believed him. He wasn’t lying.”

“Do you think the queen has had a change of heart?” Sam asked.

“I do. The servants say she hasn’t killed anyone in days. They are scared out of their minds. They are afraid that she is testing them in some way. However, there is a whisper that the queen said she wants to honor her father’s memory.”

Sparrow looked at Tiffany to gauge her response.

She was white and looking ill. The pink color in her face was gone. She was distressed and maybe more.

“Honor her father. This sounds great. It will make this world a better place. If what you have told me is true.” Sam said.

“My friend I wish more than anything that it was. But I am not so easily convinced. A heart of stone doesn’t change overnight.” Sparrow said looking at Tiffany.

“But you and I believe in the impossible.” Sam said hopefully.

“I’m not the queen.” Tiffany said to her bowl of soup.

“What did you say?” Sam asked paying attention.

“They replaced me. I don’t understand how?”

She ate her soup feeling low in heart and broken.

Is hard bread my lot now, she wondered grieved.

But having a pity party was not really Tiffany’s thing. So, after a good nights rest she would be back to herself.

Tiffany knew the man Sparrow as he was handmaid Hannah’s son. Sparrow was not yet dead because of Hannah. Tiffany had tried to kill him a few times. But every time Sparrow escaped. Despite her appreciation for Hannah who saved her and raised her. Tiffany felt Sparrow was a traitor and she was willing to kill him. But because of Hannah he was not a priority. If he lived like he was dead, she wouldn’t look for him.
