Chapter 12: The Auction House

Chapter 12: The Auction House

I got up to my feet, and bowed slightly, not sure why but it felt propper. This place, it seems to be lined in gold and power, but holds a hand in dark places. This building, these people hold a much darker side than even phoenix does. I don't know what is sold through here, but from what I cleaned up, is not of the legal kind. It may hold some legal items, but this is a place where fortunes are won and lost. There are bound to be unhappy customers.

“I finished the job sir, I hope it is to your liking.” I finally replied to him, standing up straight again.

“Indeed, and a splendid job. Seems, you really might be a worthwhile investment.” He says looking around.

“Worthwhile investment, sir?” I asked, confused.

“Yes, Your job is completed. The funds have already been wired. Have been since you walked in the door. You didn't stop, or slack off, maybe didn't even check. Others would check their account and immediately stop after they are paid. There are other reasons why, but I am going to assign you a job personally.” He said, turning his full attention to me.

“Well, I am happy to work, I am not sure what I have displayed in such a simple job, that you would want me for anything more.” I replied, trying to get some answer out of him.

“I have my reasons. So I will offer you to take this job, and only once will I offer it. I am rather not fond of repeating any questions.” Red said, looking at me.

I felt that this was make or break, if I refused this job, I would close off any more jobs that might come from this man ever again. Remembering what Pixel said about connections, I felt strongly that if I do this, I would make a big step forward.

“Yes sir! I will take the job.” I said, with confidence.

He smiled, like maybe he knew that would be my answer. This man is very dangerous. I better not get on his bad side. This is the man who strips you of everything you have, if he thinks you might be inconvenient for him. I am still not sure just how much I am stepping into the deep end, but right now it felt like I was jumping into something, and I don't know how deep this will go.

I took in a deep breath and let it out, settling my nerves. I don't know my job yet, maybe just focus on the here and now. I want to be ready for anything this might entail. Anything can happen it seems here.

“Well good, now if you will follow me. I will show you to your job.” He said, with a grin on his face that sent a small chill creeping down my spine.

‘Is Red a demon?’ was what ran through my head. I blinked and nodded, momentarily lost for words, I followed him. As he started walking further deep into the building, I noticed how dark and isolated it was. We walked to this large reinforced door, which red swiped his hand and the large door started opening from top down. Like a giant draw door, it revealed a roomish kinda area behind it.

I was puzzled. What is this thing? I watched Red walk forward into this thing, so hoping it was safe, I followed behind him and stood in this kinda very large metal box, which looks fine at first glance. I stood inside and could see that the room had some scrapes and scratches on the walls that seemed painted over or repaired.

I watched the door raised up and closed us up in this large box, which was taller than four of me, and as wide as 6 of me with my arms stretched out, this thing is massive. Then the entire room shook and became unstable, I struggled to stay on my feet, it felt like the room I was in was moving.

“Have you never been in an elevator before?” Red asked next to me, seemingly not bothered by how the room was moving.

“No, I haven't been in such a thing before. What is going on?” I asked him a bit worried.

“It's like a moving platform that raises and lowers, making it easier for moving large objects in a building, up and down.” He explained.

I noticed I had felt a little weightless, so we are going down, but what things would require an elevator of this size to move to a stage for auction? None of this was making any sense, but guess more will become clear when I get to what my job is supposed to be.

When the elevator came to a sudden stop, I almost fell to the floor, but managed to stay on my feet. With not much time difference the large door started opening again, on the otherside was a large hallway, bigger than the elevator, for a short distance, then opened into a large room on the other side.

Red started walking as soon as the door was open enough to walk out. I quickly followed behind his large strides. He sure did always carry himself with such strict elegance, and grace, I swore he was a robot who was never flawed in their movements.

Making it out of the elevator, I thought the building above was reinforced, but down here felt like a bunker. Who knows how thick the walls were, much less how deep we were. I wasn't sure how far someone could dig underneath the city, it's not like this is a planet and protected with a crust and core, you could dig through to the otherside.

The thought struck me like lightning. What if someone did, dig to the otherside, would they just be underneath the city, or would it go straight to the Abyss? I sighed heavily, these are questions I would never get the answers to.

Following him, we shortly ended up in the large room, and looking around it seemed to be split into different sections with other massive doors on the walls to each side, with only one on the far, which seemed much more secured. That must be an entrance and exit to where this is, and the less protected side doors, must be more storage. I could see large vehicles to one side, which seemed to be where they stored them, a spot where smaller seemingly personal vehicles where parked, off on the other half of the large warehouse seemed where crates of varying sizes seemed to be stored on shelves and organized, leaving a spot I guess for moving things through since that area wasn't too occupied by anything noticeable.

It was all really impressive, I couldn't imagine what all this could cost, or how long it took to make. I was so distracted by the size of the room, and its contents, I had not noticed that Red had continued walking on to the side of the room. This must mean he might open one of them? I rushed over to him, just as he waved his hand, and a smaller door, next to the large one opened, allowing us a path through.

Red walked in, and I watched the dimmed lights inside start to brighten up, but something horrific hit me before I even got the door. It was such a blow, I had completely stopped in my tracks. The smell was so horrible it felt like someone had punched me in the face. I felt my stomach turn, it was so horrific, I had not felt anything so horrendous before.

It took me a long while to gain the confidence, and control over my body, which was trembling. I made my way to the door, worried about what might be on the other side, my instincts were confirmed when I crossed the doorway. There were cages, of all sizes, holding beats, creatures, and monsters from worlds long gone, that seemed to have been captured and some held here to be auctioned off later. The noises of the beasts and such were deafening, none of the beasts or animals wanted to be in their cages.

“What is this?” I gasped before even thinking about it.

“Well, this is where your job starts. You will be following along with us, delivering someone their new pet. It's fairly small, but still highly valued.” He explained, as he continued to walk deeper into the room.

Soon he found what he was looking for, and grabbing a small covered cage, in a fine red cloth, he turned to me holding it out.

“You will be holding onto it.” He said, his smile did not assure me this was going to be fine, or he was finding amusement in me inwardly squirming.

I reached out, and grabbed a hold of this small cage, it really felt light. ‘Was there really anything in this cage?’ I wondered, the desire to open the cage filled my mind. I shook my head, it's not mine, and it's covered for a reason. I must not lift the cloth or look inside. The cage itself seemed to be made of sturdy metal bars, with a solid bottom with a small lip, the red cloth only seemed to be a cover, and not really attached except for at the top.

“So, what do we do now?” I asked Red while holding the cage.

“Well, now we go get in the car, and get ready to deliver it.” He said nothing more, and started walking out the way we came in.
