Stepping outside the building I took a big breath of air. It's interesting, this place. I couldn't imagine what this place must've been like when it was being first created. A bastion of creation last stood outside the pit of the abyss. It's incredible. I looked at the buildings around me, and I noticed more about how some buildings have a different style to them. Not just style but some are made of drastically different materials. Most of the basics are plain and concrete, but the more expensive homes on top of the skyline, they hold much more different styles. I wondered if it had to do with what Para said about pieces of other worlds, if that could mean the people here could all be from different places. Though I don't think I am from anywhere.
I started walking, hearing loud cheering from the main road. Guess the main party returned. Though I wonder why they would all return in a group instead of just coming back when they are done with their own underdark dives. I guess that would require more investigation later.
I was walking parallel to the main road, avoiding it because of how pacted full it was, I could get glimpses of some people returning. Some had some very expensive looking armor, and weapons. They seemed to have varying vehicles or wagons to carry gear in.
“Guess the portal thing Pixel thing has is very rare, or not big enough to store too much.” I wondered out loud.
Are’s guild was outfront and carrying large flags with their symbol. It looked like it was a set or curled horns. It was interesting, the main background is bright red, with gold trim and the horns are golden as well, guess it represents their wealth. I noticed several other guilds too, the pink one, green, seems they all have basic colors to represent themselves simply. The flags usually had their color, with a part of what makes their leader unique, followed by a secondary color representing what they specialize in.
The main street was full of them parading through it with their spoils and fresh armor, but the ones less well off, looked like they did their best to clean up what they had, and kept more to the center and out of sight. Seems it's a show of power, and representation over just returning. I noticed that phoenix did not have a flag or group in the parade. At least on this street I was left alone, with it being empty, or I thought it was. Soon this person in a hurry brushes past me in a rugged cloak. It seemed to have been well worn in and used.
“Hey, there is plenty of road to share. You don't need to pump into the only person on the road.” I said as he kept walking on ignoring me.
The only reply I got was a low grumble as he kept walking off ignoring me. He didn't even bother looking at me. I just rolled my eyes and moved on, I realized it wasn't worth focusing on. I still had to get back to Phoenix and see if they have another job I can do, on my own.
I finished walking my way home, looking around I could see some people sleeping in boxes, and on the roads sitting around. Most of them looked hurt or injured, but not new injuries. Maybe failed dives, or just bad situations. From my mission with Pixel, I guess mugging and robbing is not an option even if you're not on a mission if you carry anything on you, or take a wrong turn.
I got back to the guild and walked in. I didn't see Mona behind the bar, or anyone else in here. It was empty right now. It was weird, I knew there weren't a lot of people here but this had a real empty feeling to it.
“This is how the building normally is.” Para said, sighing from my shoulder.
“Really? It seems kinda sad if this is how it normally feels.” I admitted.
I turned to my right on the posting board. Looking it over I saw there was new missions. It got me curious, there were a lot of postings, but sometimes I could see ones disappear then more replace them.
“This board is hooked up to a city wide information hub. Any requests can be posted on it, and it goes to every alliance. Though there is an option to request things of certain alliances. Those requests have a unique look to them, and are usually separated from the run of the mill.” She clarified, before I could even ask.
“Oh, well that's convenient? Who runs the hub? A guild?” I asked.
“Oh no, it's run by the city leader. It's a neutral power, or supposed to be a neutral power compared to the guilds. So no guild can run the city, or that's how it's supposed to be. There is a big case of bribery and dirty dealings that happen to allow guilds to do more than they should.” She told me.
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
“How do you know all of this? I guess not really, if what you said about being reincarnated was true then who knows what else could be out there. Are there any requirements for taking missions?” I asked, noticing that when I pressed on missions they flashed red.
“Oh, yes, sorry. There is a sort of reputation system. If you complete a mission, the ones who requested it, confirming that it was completed, can give you a rating. That rating is a sort of “trust” rating it plays into your overall standing rating, or social status. You're still a civilian, with a zero trust rating. So you could probably only take on the most basic jobs that don't need you to be trusted.” She said happy to answer my question.
“Oh fun. I wonder what those jobs will consist of.” I wondered out loud.
“Well you can have fun with what you choose to do, I am going to get a glass of milk for my cookies.” She said, then with a small leap off my shoulder.
Looking over it only took a few flaps of her wings for her to make it across the room to the bar’s counter and look in the small fridge to get a her sized glass of milk. Seems Mona knew Paradigm would be around and wanted some milk.
I turned my attention back to the posting board. After some looking, I noticed that on the top right of the postings had a number, guess that number represents the minimum “trust” number to accept the posting. So I need to find one that doesn't need trust for me to start doing.
Looking through the list, I found a job that took my interest. It seemed a simple enough job. The listing said that they needed someone for cleaning. It seemed a simple enough taste to take on. If I do good, maybe I can get some reputation to take on a better job. The location seemed a little familiar. That didn't matter though, I need to get started somewhere. The bottom is where that's going to be, I guess.
I put my wrist to the board and it copied the information over. Thinking about my job pulled up the listing for me to look at on my wrist. I did notice it was no longer on the board itself. I added the listing to my map, and it showed me where I needed to go. It seemed to be the auction house, Pixel and I went too.
I took a quick glance at Para, she seemed to be doing okay, by herself. With my job acquired and ready to work, I stepped outside. The parade march already seemed to have finished, and the streets cleared out some, there was still a lot of foot traffic. People walked everywhere. Different sizes and heights, there seemed to be no consistency, except the bases of which each seemed to be. Though several people can be based on what seemed equestrian, some could have hands, others walked on all four. Still the streets were too full for my liking, at my first opportunity I slinked down into an alley, escaping the large crowds.
Walking down alley’s seemed very common, surprised by how well connected alley’s are in this city. It's almost like they are made intentionally to hide from view, or to escape from people. I wonder just how much the city was planned, or created. I am not sure how much of what would be “Illegal” work there is, but my first job seemed to be bordering on it for just moving an item. I wonder what not boarding those lines might look like.
Stepping back out onto a street, let me breathe easier. I hadn't thought about it till then, but those would be great places to ambush people without getting seen too. I should do my best to avoid using them too much. If I do, I should be ready for a fight, just in case. Walking the street, I noticed the lack of cars. I had seen some when I first arrived, but most roads seem built for walking, not large vehicles. Maybe, they are a lot more exclusive than I thought they were.
After walking some familiar roads, I made my way to the familiar spot where we handed off the package, but no one was waiting for me this time. I knocked on the door.
“Hello?” I asked.
Just after I asked, the door opened with a click, and opened a little bit. I pushed on the door and it swung open. There was still no one to greet me, guess that this is too small a job for someone important to greet me. I walk inside the building.
The outside seemed to be a mix of strong with some designing, the inside was a different story. Inside this building was built luxurious. Everything seemed nice, from the walls being painted, and the wood trimming everywhere. The lantern lightings mounted to wooden bases on the walls with golden fixtures. Very nice place, that made me immediately concerned about how expensive it might be to break anything. I might be working the rest of my life, just to pay it off. With a loud gulp and pressing down the feeling of anxiety, I pushed myself forward.
