Chapter 8: Reflected world

Chapter 8: Reflected world

The land and the sky were one in the same. The sky perfectly mirrored the land or perhaps it was the other way around. Though it wasn’t clear what was the sky and what was the ground. Vel believed whatever she was standing on to be the ground. She wandered across the grassy mountains she was atop. She realized while exploring that the concept of night did not exist. There was always white light illuminating the world. It was strange as there was life, but there wasn’t another intelligent creature to be seen. It was all creatures she was familiar with. There were birds in the air and all sorts of passive creatures on the ground.

“The peace reminds me of when I first arrived in Skylin. It’s nice to take a relaxing stroll after so much adventure.” Vel spoke her thoughts aloud, as she continued to wander. She observed the different animals living their lives. Eventually she got hungry and hunted one of the bison. She climbed up a mountain and made a campfire, in order to cook the bison meat. Vel cooked the meat evenly, and enjoyed the view of the reflected world. After she finished eating she continued to explore the grassy mountainous region. She heard the sound of water while she was atop a mountain.

She quickly followed the sound. Which led her to a river that flowed across some flatter land. She followed the river to its end. The end of the river was a waterfall and Vel used water magic to ride down the waterfall. The breeze quickly flowed around her body as she picked up speed. Eventually, she made it to the end of the extremely long drop. In the center was an island and upon that island was a tree. The tree was unique as its trunk went all the way up and connected to the reflected world. Half of the trunk was normal and then there was a section of leaves, and above that was a sharp point that continued into the sky. Surrounding the island were waterfalls just as large as the one Vel went down.

Vel approached the strange tree in the middle of the water while walking on the water. She climbed the tree with a smile. She made it to the halfway point and sat with her back against the strange upper section. She was able to sit atop of the leaves. Even at this halfway point she was higher than the mountains she had traversed.

Vel pulled out her journal for interdimensional travel and began to write her notes. She used her magic to learn the name of the dimension she was in.

“Reflecto. Well that’s pretty straightforward, whoever created this world must’ve been bad at naming things.” Vel said, as the name manifested on her page. Once she finished writing her notes she returned the book to her pocket dimension. She decided to climb the rest of the tree to make it to the top. The latter half of the tree had no branches and only small slits to hold onto. Despite the difficulty she continued the climb and while she was really high up she got a good view of the landscape.

Once she made it to the supposed top of the tree thing. She produced a stone from magic and threw it upward only for the sky to ripple and the stone disappeared. She then put her hand through and then pulled it out. Her hand was completely fine and didn’t sustain any damage. When she put her hand through it felt like nothing was there. She climbed all the way to the peak and continued to go up and when she was through the sky. She noticed machinery throughout the room she had entered. The room was dark, only illuminated by small lights from machinery scattered around the room. The technology was not something she was familiar with.

She created a small flame to illuminate the area. She could see a bit better, she noticed a small looking lever. She flipped it up and the room became illuminated by lights. Though she didn’t understand how, as she had yet to experience the convenience of electricity. It surprised her how the entire area that had been almost pitch black was now illuminated in an instant.

“Wow I have no idea what any of these things do or how any of it works.” Vel looked at all of the unfamiliar boxes with wires coming out of them. Vel stumbles upon another lever, one that is larger. She accidentally bumps into it causing it to activate. She stared at it for a moment.

Suddenly, a face that resembles a human but made of particles. That soulless face began to speak. “Hello user, congratulations on climbing to the top of the world. You are the second user to use this device. Feel free to use the ladder behind to enter the mirrored world.” The face spoke with a monotone voice. “This world was an experiment done by the creator Dunbaul. After he was stranded here he decided to make this world into a more interesting one. He was completely alone devoid of any other human companions. So, user please enjoy your stay in this world.” The voice continued, once it had finished it disappeared just as suddenly as it appeared.

“I guess I’ll explore the reflected half. To think some lone person built all of this after being stranded. I don’t understand any of it though.” Vel shrugged. She walked towards the dark green ladder and quickly climbed it. Once she climbed it to the end she saw a ripple in the air and went through it. The moment she went through she fell upward, or rather downward. She didn’t feel like climbing all the way down. So she activated her wind magic to prevent her from free falling into the ground.

She flew through the reflected world noting how there were far less animals. It was pretty much the same as the world below which was expected. The same green hills and mountains. The same bodies of water. With the only exception being the living organisms. She wandered through a dark cave to see if she could find anything interesting. There seemed to be nothing until she heard a small bit of noise on the other side of a seemingly normal cave wall. She went over to check the cavern wall, only to see a little mouse exit from through the wall. She attempted to knock on the wall only for her hand to go through.

“The wall is just an illusion, I wonder what’s on the other side?” Vel comments, as she walks through the wall and on the other side was a large mirror. She walked over to the mirror though her reflection was not shown on the mirror. “How strange, does this mirror not reflect living creatures?” Vel questioned, as she put her finger tip on the mirror. The mirror began to flash a bright light and her reflection was now shown on the mirror. However, it kept walking and eventually it came out of the mirror. This shocked Vel, as she had never seen anything like this before. There were now two Vels that stood opposite from one another.

“So did this mirror clone me or something?” Vel asked. However the copy of her did not move once it was outside of the mirror. “I don’t sense any magic from it, so is it just a clone of my physical body?” Vel went to touch the clone. The clone’s body began to merge into her own.

“Uh what the fuck is going on? Should I let it just merge with me? I’m kinda curious about what will happen.” Vel said, accepting whatever was going to happen next. The clone was melding into Vel’s body and after it was all done and the clone had fully merged with Vel.

“I don’t feel any different. It was weird watching my own reflection become a part of me. So will this do anything or not?” Vel said then she noticed that the mirror wasn’t reflecting the cave, but instead showed a white temple of some sort. Vel also felt drawn to the mirror like something was calling to her. She walked to the mirror and this time, when she put her hand on it. Her hand went through, she was entering the mirror somehow.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Once she was fully through the mirror, it was a place that could only be described as godly. It was a pearly white pristine temple with columns surrounding the central area. The central area had one set of stairs and Vel climbed on top of it where at the center there was an altar. Past the altar was a giant statue of a turtle. Vel placed her hand upon the altar which caused smoke to exit the turtle statue’s nose which formed into a bird like shape. The bird then flew into Vel’s chest and there was a moment of silence.

The silence was followed by a feeling of power rising through Vel’s body. She felt physically and magically stronger. Despite the drastic increase in power it was not a painful feeling like when receiving her mother’s blood. Instead it was a pleasant feeling of being powered up. Once it was finished coursing through her body the silence returned. The silence was broken once again by a voice echoing throughout the temple.

“The reflected body has reunited with the reflected soul. Together they became one with the original. The body allows for passage into the reflected world. The soul doubles the power of the original. To enter through a reflection you must channel mana before wishing to enter. Be careful not to get trapped.” The voice explained. “Now, leave this place before you get swallowed up.” The voice said with urgency. The temple began to collapse and Vel escaped through the entrance and once she was through, the mirror shattered into dust.

“Okay, I guess it could only bless one person.” Vel comments. She looked around and saw a puddle. She channeled some mana and went inside the puddle. It was a reflected area of the little spot in the cave. Anything blocked off it didn’t include. Vel went out of the mirrored world and exited the cave completely. She flew to the top of the reflected world and went through. She was back to the normal world. All the reflection stuff made her tired so she flew to the top of a grassy mountain and rested her head against a tree. She fell asleep.

Meanwhile after the reflected temple collapsed the interdimensional police office got a notification in their system that a great change happened in the reflected world. Inside of a high tech information and observation center. With many operators monitoring the dimensions.

“This is the second time that dimension had a great change. The first was when it had been transformed into the reflected state it is today. Though by the time we got there it was too late and the cause of the change had passed away. The man changed the world’s very existence to the point where even the world’s name reflected his changes.” Said one of the operators.

“This time we have better interdimensional travel devices that can lead us to most dimensions easily and quickly. I’ll capture whoever dares mess with the order of reality.” Nataline angrily states. She quickly assembled her team in order to capture the troublemaker. Vel had no idea what was in store for her. The officers came in droves and stealthily entered the dimension Vel was peacefully taking a nap in.

Nataline used a tracker to locate any intelligent life and found one. She led her team stealthily to apprehend Vel. She finally saw Vel and walked towards Vel while concealing any malicious intent. She handcuffed Vel with specially designed handcuffs that weaken the target’s power in every known way. The moment Vel felt weaker she awoke to be greeted by a woman with a large team pointing unfamiliar weapons at her. She also realized she was handcuffed.

“It doesn’t seem like you have a device that lets you travel through dimensions which means you must be a magic user. Unfortunately for you those handcuffs reduce your mana pool to only ten percent of what it normally is. It also weakens your physical ability. Though you should have enough to walk.” The woman explained, as she dragged Vel through a scientifically created portal to sentence her to imprisonment.

Ten percent of my mana pool huh. Well I’m pretty sure I can probably do most basic spells including attack magic. Also enough to walk? I feel like I was when I was a little younger. I'm definitely weaker and probably couldn’t fight a primordial but I can still do a lot. However I think being arrested might be interesting, so I’ll play along. Vel thought to herself just going with the flow. She was taken to a room where she was changed into the prisoner’s uniform. Hers was a red one. Then she was put into a cell with a roommate.

Her roommate was a young woman with thick shoulder length dark orange hair. She had ruby red colored eyes. She wore a different dark green colored uniform. Vel noted that she didn’t have mana.

“Hey roomie, it must’ve taken some effort for you to be caught if they got you in red.” The woman comments.

“Nah I was asleep, so they just cuffed me while I wasn’t awake.” Vel laughed.

“Why’d they put you in a red uniform then?” The woman was confused.

“Probably cause I’m a sorcerer but I don’t know.” Vel casually replied. “These cuffs don’t seem that hard to break. I'm still plenty strong with them on.” She comments.

“Yeah I get you these cuffs are really annoying they make me feel all groggy. Wait, did you say they don’t do much to you??” The look of shock on her face was priceless. “I’ve seen big guys feel miserable due to how much it saps their strength. How strong are you? I thought you were a sorcerer, isn’t the main weakness of magic types their lack of physical strength?” Vel was confusing the hell out of her cell mate.

“Yeah my mom had me go through some hellish training in order to get rid of that weakness. Though I’ve always been agile since I was young. Well with that out of the way my name’s Vel.” Vel introduced herself.

“Nice to meet you Vel, my name is Aluun.” She shook Vel’s hand. “Unfortunately, I’m pretty much a normal human when it comes to strength. Though I’m an inventor, my strength comes from my mind. I invented a device that lets me travel to different dimensions. I’ve been using it for a couple years to have an adventure. I’ve got quite a lot of money saved up because of it. However, my money couldn’t save me from being captured.” Aluun explained.

“So you travel using technology, that’s interesting. I originate from a dimension that isn’t as technologically advanced. I can’t make my portals with these cuffs on because my mana is too low at the moment. However, even if I don’t break out of these cuffs, if I just wait then I’ll have enough mana to create one even with the cuffs on.” Vel explained.

“Why’s that it’s not like your mana is just going to increase? Mages as far as I’m aware have to train in order to increase their mana and some can’t increase it at all past a certain age. That’s what I’ve heard anyways, cause I don’t come from a world of magic.” Aluun was confused.

“That’s normally how it is from the world I call home. However, due to a certain thing with my mom and I. Our mana pool increases every year on our birthday. The longer we stay alive the stronger we become. I could probably escape, but I’ve never been arrested or in prison so I’m a little curious what life’s like here.” Vel responded.

“You’re telling me that you’re letting yourself be imprisoned because you are curious what it’s like being a prisoner. I can’t believe I’d hear something like that come out of anyone’s mouth. Are you alright in the head? Well whenever you do escape can you take me with you? Even if you just drop me off in whatever civilization I’d like to leave this place.” Aluun was dumbfounded by Vel.

“Yeah sure why not. I’ll take you along my adventure if you want. The more the merrier they say.” Vel happily said. She was ready to find out what it’s like to be an interdimensional prisoner.
