Chapter 17: Retcons

Chapter 17: Retcons

It was a dark and sad day or something. Imagine a classic funeral scene.

Noel stood watching the casket being lowered. It should’ve been me, not him. Neither Gerald nor Gutts deserve this kind of fate.

The rest of the attendees had already started leaving. Noel was the only one who stayed until the end.

Why am I the one who goes free? Why! Why did it have to turn out this way. I thought that I was being careful after that disaster in middle school. Why now? How did I mess up? Noel wept at his friend’s grave.

The scene shifts to a prison cell. Gerald’s hands are chained, his face is filled with gloom and he looks extraordinarily tired. The prison guard walks in accompanied by another person.

“Mr. Vintovka, your lawyer has arrived.”

“Hey what’s up, probably nothing. My name is 泣法 (Napo) de Mon Correon.” said the short man that we’ll call Napo for short. “I guess I’ll try to stop the charges. Please execute…uh I mean excuse us officer, I would like to discuss this matter with my client in private.”

The officer left the room.

“Listen if you want to like live or whatever. You can tell me anything cuz nothing really matters in the end. You are accused of Gutts Serkber’s death and the disappearance of Saitou Masaka. Were you the reason they got the sweet release of death?”

What the fuck? Is this guy like emo or something? Why does he sound so depressed?

“NO! I swear I didn’t do it!”

“Yeah, alright. I’ll do my best to get you those like 2000 extra weeks of life. But I mean. Does it really matter though how long we live?”

“Bro, are you even trying to defend me here?!”

“I mean, I’m just stating the truth. What even is there in life to live for? Booze? Relationships? Power? I mean, do we even really need joy in our lives? It’s just a chemical reaction in our brains anyway.”

“Can you get me out of this or, no?” Gerald was already starting to get worried considering the inconvenient disposition of the man chosen to defend his innocence.

“Yes, I am perfectly qualified. I have a degree in law and psychology. I am just trying to understand the human mind more properly. The mind is a terrible thing. I mean, you couldn’t really have truly felt anything at the death of your friend. Could you? It’s just a chemical in your brain that’s telling you that you did. We probably don’t even have an emotion for sadness really. It’s most likely just a subcategory of fear.” Ok, let’s see how he responds to this. The lawyer is plotting something.

“What does that even have to do with anything? I just want you to free me! Just tell them that I didn’t do it!”

Oh, not showing any remorse for the death of your friend? That’s a shame. I though that maybe you really didn’t do it. But here you are, prioritizing your freedom over the death of a friend.

“I’m assuming you weren’t close with the victim?”

“No, we were pretty close. I didn’t know him as well as Noel does but we definitely weren’t strangers. But why is this even important?”

“It’s important to establish these things for the case.”

Why is everyone questioning me so much? First with Saitou, now with Gutts! Why do they just assume it’s the last person near the victim? Saitou probably just got lost or got himself killed knowing the way he was and maybe Gutts was secretly a terrorist. Why can’t they just understand? Gerald was getting really tired of all the negative interactions he had been through since Saitou went missing. This really influenced his way of dealing with the current situation as well.

“Do you think I’ll be sent to jail? Will I be executed?”

“No, I think I’ll be able to get you out of any sentence considering the lack of evidence against you. However, you might need to be under probation.”

The day of the trial came and Gerald was given a two month long probation. He was able to go back to school two days later.

As Gerald walked back into class, the stares of all his classmates really infuriated him.

Gerald’s gaze fell onto the face of Noel. At that moment, Noel looked away. This is it! This is the last of them! Now I have no friends at all! One last try. Gerald approached Noel’s desk and started speaking. “Hey, Noel. Do you wan…”

“Sorry, I’m going to be studying with my girlfriend for the upcoming exam today. I can’t do anything else.”

Well, there goes all the hope I had. What do I do now? There isn’t even a way to find the one who did the crimes.

----------------------------------------

This’ll bounce around between Sharlan’s perspective and Noel’s.

----------------------------------------

Sharlan looked back at the direction from which he came from. In front of him was a huge probably golden ring that was probably sparking while probably rotating. Within the magical ring, he could see Lesli and the girl with blonde hair and pigtails still in the forest. However, around him was no longer forest. Sharlan found himself in an ordinary modern day room. What is going on? Is this a portal or something? I gotta go back. It seems Lesli is worried by my disappearance. Sharlan started trying to walk back through the portal but he tripped on something. Uhh, I kind of wish I still had the Doors. I feel like it was a bit more useful of an ability when it comes to certain things. When he got up, something felt a little off. He walked through the portal.

Sharlan and Leslie regroup and start heading towards their entry location into the demon lord’s fort. A bunch of little minions attack them. Leslie eats MickyD’s. Sharlan runs past and heads towards the clearly menacing looking door that probably contains the boss room behind it. It’s time. I can finally prove to the world that I am the strongest there is. “I, the great Sharlan, will now vanquish the nonemighty John.”

“Huh, My name is The Progenitor Ogal!”

“Yo, what’s up my Ogal.”

“How dare you. Mortal. To show such insolence and utilize the hard L. I would have let you live if you had referred to me as oga instead. I shall now summon the strongest warrior from another world to defeat you!”

Sharlan did not hesitate. He used his strongest spell from the start which was some kind of purple magic lightning bolt looking thing which has a completely unpronounceable name. Let’s refer to it as aeruog (keyboard mash). When Sharlan used his ghauvawe;oj, the demon lord’s hp went down like 20 points. (At least in Sharlan’s video game-like perspective of life). The demon lord took the blow directly but did not stop the summoning. Now, It was already too late, the hero had been summoned to fight.

Noel and Futaba are walking towards Noel’s place to study.

“Hey Noel, what do you think of the theory of multiverses? Do you think we can ever truly explore every aspect of life?”

“Maybe. I saw something in last weeks newspaper about a portal appearing.”

“I saw that too! Maybe they’re related. You think we have finally reached the stage of technology where we can travel to another dimension? Maybe there is some organization that’s not sharing these incredible results with us.”

They walked into the house..

“It’s so crazy to imagine! There is a whole multiverse that exists which has....”

“NO! What happened here?!”

The house was trashed. All of the furniture was knocked over and something was on fire (somehow Sharlan managed to do all of that by falling down once). Noel immediately rushed over to try and put out the fire.

The summon had instantly vanished. The other summoned minions that the Demon Lord had used so much energy on to summon had as well.

“What is going on? My power! What happened?”

“HA HA! It must’ve been my p9ghqer9up! I knew that attack had some affinity with portals! Hmm. Maybe I can somehow redirect its flow to actually create my own portals?”

“Don’t think that you’ve defeated me just yet!”

The fight continued.

Futaba and Noel finally finished cleaning up the mess and were now studying in Noel’s room.

“So, basically, when you take the natural log of ….”

Noel’s mind was still occupied by the event that had just happened a couple days prior. He could barely study, much less sleep. His brain was overwhelmed by feelings of guilt and trying to figure out at what point he went wrong. He was so overwhelmed that he didn’t even consider his words when he entered the house. His KD is now ∞. He obliterated the multiverse with a single word.

“I’m going to apply for Physics College Replica Instance 8 (PCRI8) next year and hopefully I get accepted.”

She offered him a biscuit.

Noel’s thoughts were elsewhere entirely. He refused “No, I’m good.”
