Chapter 13: Stakes

Chapter 13: Stakes

Gerald and Noel were sitting in the nurse's office, wearing a change of clothes. Police were in the hallway doing policey things. The ambulance was already sent back as there was no one that they could even rescue at this point. They sat in silence, as you would, when one of your close friends violates the law of conservation of energy and matter and just despawns. The teacher walks in with two cops.

“Gerald Vintovka, we’ll need to have a word with you.”

“OOOOOH” said the teacher like the complement of one. “….no? Hmm. That’s fair.” That was his attempt at making light of the situation. (wrong move)

“You are under suspect for the disappearance of two students: Saitou Masaka, and Gutts Serkber”

“Ayoo, what the hell? Why are you all suspecting me?”

“According to multiple eye witness accounts, you were the last person seen next to each of the victims. We’ll be taking you into custody until we gather more evidence.”

“What’s gonna happen to me?” asked Noel.

“You will be questioned next. Await your turn here.”

“I’ll stay here and talk to him while you guys are interrogating.” said the teacher.

The two officers left with the unwillingly complying Gerald. The teacher and Noel were left in the room to wait.

Noel kept thinking to himself. It must’ve been me! I must’ve accidentally Noed at something someone said. Just like when I accidentally said that to the kid! When could this one have happened? I don’t remember! This is bad! I gotta think of it. Otherwise, I don’t know what else could happen.

The teacher watching over him noticed the worry in his eyes and decided to say something in order to comfort him.

“How are you doing bud? I know this must be tough for you but you gotta keep your head up.”

“I’m okay. I’m just confused and don’t know what to do about this. One of my friends just died right next to me and I don’t even know what caused it!”

“Calm down. Take a deep breath and relax your mind. You’re just overthinking right now. There’s little you can do about the situation. If it will at least make you feel better, you shouldn’t worry about yours or Gerald’s future. I believe that you guys were not the ones who did it. I don’t know how or why it happened but I’m sure of at least this much. I’m also certain that the police won’t assume things and the case will eventually be solved. Just calm down and try to collect your thoughts. Maybe you’ll be able to provide a clue for the police as to why this may have happened if you are able to remember anything strange.”

“That’s the problem! I don’t recall anything strange! There was literally no reason for this to happen. Gutts had said that he’d catch up with us and then when we turned around….”

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Noel almost couldn’t hold his tears at this point. The guilt was eating away at him.

It must’ve been my fault! It had to be! There’s no other explanation! It’s cause of this accursed ability! Even that kid in the park had to suffer!

“Sometimes, it’s good to focus on something else in these situations to get your mind off of reality. Maybe you could review what we did in class today.”

Ah, hell nah. Does he really think I’ll start thinking about schoolwork at a time like this? I’ve gotta figure out what went wrong or when my tongue slipped. Let’s see, there was that time when Gutts made a joke about being immortal. Hmm. I can’t really remember how I replied to him. There was that biology lesson when we were making jokes about being alive. Why can’t I recall! Why am I so stupid! Now that kid’s dad won’t return home from the military.

“Huh? What’s this?”

“This is my handmade study guide for the next test. I think you should have this to help you make it through this tough time….”

Noel started looking at the paper and kept on listening to the teacher. Suddenly, a thought hit him. Wait a minute. For a negation of a p then q conditional, only the q gets negated. Wait, that means….I think he said “when my dad will come back from the military, then he'll beat you up.” If that’s the case, then I just won’t get beaten up! Oh my god! I was so worried I would be responsible for it.

“Listen kid, life and death are a cycle. You’re going to grow older too...”

“N…” Shit I could’ve died right there. I barely caught myself.

“What was that?”

“Nothing, nevermind, continue.”

“You won’t live forever.”

Noel closed his eyes and braced himself. “No, no I won’t.” Ok, that seemed to work. I might’ve just given myself a superpower. Oh my god, I think I just won! Thanks teach, you definitely brightened up my day. Maybe I’ll even be able to bring Gutts back if I get someone to say the correct phrase! I gotta think of a way to make him say something along those lines without telling him directly….

“Hey, Professor, you think resurrection could happen?”

“Well, if you’re asking about my religious perspective on life, then yes, I do think so. However, I also think we can manage to bring people back from the dead through science too.”

“Do you think there is a way that Gutts could be resurrected?”

“With this generation’s level of technology? No, Gutts won’t be resurrected.”

“NO!”

“Huh! That was quite loud. You think there is a way?”

To play off the situation, Noel started balling his eyes out and the teacher started trying to comfort him again.

“Next!” The police officer just entered.

“Oh, you’re up. Get out there and just be honest, kid. I know you’ll be fine!”

Noel left the room and went with the police.

On the way to the other room, a shout was heard from the hallway. “Someone call an ambulance!”

“What happened!?”

“They found the body!”

Everyone started moving. Officers were coming back over to the crime scene to see the source of the news.

Did I actually do it? Am I actually able to do something this crazy with my ability?

As they approached the scene, they could see no trace of the blood on the walls. A body was laying on the floor. Soon, an ambulance could be heard outside and doctors rushed into the building. They placed Gutt’s body on the stretcher and carried him into the ambulance.

Ok, now we just have to wait for good news!

The police brought both of the kids back into the room and the guy who first noticed the body and restarted the questioning from the beginning now that this unexpected turn of events had unfolded before them.

“Are you sure that you just saw the blood collect itself back and reconstruct the body?”

“YES! I swear. It was like magic!”

“We cannot have you guys leave until this case is solved entirely. We’ll have to wait for the doctors to provide him with medical treatment and see if everything is alright. We’ll set up sleeping arrangements.”

Some time went by and the doctors finally gave them the news.

“So, although we found his body, he only had a pulse for a few short minutes. We detected no neuron activity in his brain. He was in a comatose like state until about halfway to the hospital where his pulse ceased again. We tried reanimating him thinking that maybe he was some sort of anomaly, considering his body put itself back together after exploding, however, it seems to just be an ordinary corpse at this point.”

Why?! I thought it would work! I even made sure to have the correct conditional this time! Is it really impossible to bring people back from the dead?
