Chapter: 37 The Third Eye

After their week of thrilling amusement park adventures, L-03, N-02, K-06, B-05, and F-04 found themselves back in the sterile, high-tech environment of Dr. Steins’ secret laboratory. The transition from the cheerful chaos of the amusement park to the cold, clinical atmosphere of the lab was abrupt, but they knew the importance of the work that awaited them.

Dr. Steins, slightly unsettling Modified Touched, wasted no time and got straight to business. He informed them of a new player on the scene in Rochester, someone who had the potential to disrupt the carefully balanced status quo - Camellia, Saiya’s mother.

“Camellia is a formidable opponent,” Dr. Steins stated, his voice calm and emotionless. “She is a pureblooded vampire of the highest rank, with centuries of experience and knowledge. She is also fiercely protective of her daughter, and will stop at nothing to ensure her safety and happiness.”

They listened intently, their expressions serious and alert, understanding that they were dealing with a foe unlike any other. Z-01's footage of the fight with Tase had shown them just a glimpse of Camellia’s extraordinary abilities.

Information gleaned from their ever-watchful operative, Z-01, indicated that Camellia had arrived in the city with a specific purpose: to take care of her daughter during what might be a pivotal moment in her life. Saiya’s possible awakening was a cause for concern, an anomaly in itself. Dr. Steins explained that this event was impossible for anyone other than humans, granting them the unique power of mana, a form of energy that differed significantly from the Aura abilities and Sin skills they were familiar with.

“Mana is the essence of magic,” Dr. Steins explained with a glint of fascination in his eyes. “It is a rare and mysterious phenomenon that only occurs in humans who have a strong affinity for the supernatural. Mana grants the user the power to wield magic, opening doors to spells and incantations that transcend the capabilities of Aura abilities.”

Stolen story; please report.

To illustrate the distinction, he showed them a holographic projection of a human brain, highlighting the areas activated by mana.

“Mana is generated by the pineal gland, also known as the third eye,” he continued. “It is then distributed throughout the body via the nervous system, allowing the user to manipulate the elements, summon creatures, alter reality, and perform other feats that are far beyond the ordinary.”

He switched the projection to show a comparison between an Aura ability user and a mana spell caster.

“Aura abilities are based on physical attributes and personal traits,” he explained. “They are limited by the user’s stamina and creativity. Mana spells are based on mental attributes and universal laws. They are limited by the user’s knowledge and willpower.”

The holographic display showcased examples of mana spells, ranging from simple fireballs and lightning bolts to complex illusions and enchantments.

“As you can see,” Dr. Steins continued, “mana spells are not only considerably more potent but also far more efficient in terms of energy expenditure. A single mana spell can achieve what would take dozens of Aura abilities to accomplish.”

As they absorbed this knowledge, the weight of their mission grew heavier. Dr. Steins assigned Z-01 a critical role - should Saiya’s awakening occur, he was tasked with apprehending her and transporting her to the Singularity. Praise was offered to Z-01's capability and his growing understanding of Saiya.

“As for you five,” Dr. Steins shifted his attention to his creations, his tone stern. “Your role is to support Z-01 and ensure his success. You will also have to deal with any interference from Camellia or other parties who might be interested in Saiya’s awakening.”

They nodded, accepting their responsibilities. However, Dr. Steins had one more directive, one that underscored the gravity of their mission.

“And if Camellia tries to stop you,” he said coldly. “You have my permission to eliminate her.”

The room hung heavy with the finality of that statement. This was a mission of utmost importance, and they knew that they had entered a high-stakes game, where the fate of the city rested on their shoulders.
