Step 2.75

Josh Hammott must be feeling nervous.

After getting into high school, he never really got nervous. He understood hesitating led to mistakes. But he was never locked in a house with nowhere to go before. Josh had to sit and wait for what felt like years.

Someone on the outside would think Josh was being childish. It was just something he did as a kid, right?

Wrong. Everything someone does becomes a part of them. Even creating a fictional character and acting him out will lead to some parallel thought. Josh had become too in character.

If that character were to resurface, he would die of shame. Even now, he still has to calmly wait and focus on what to say.

From the door, Dead walked in. Finally, the moment of truth.

“It is okay, Josh. You did not get the [Dark Historian].”

“Whew! Dodged a bullet there.”

“But you did get the [Rainbowmancer].”

“…Why…”

“Josh, I know that you are disappointed, but you have a wonderful treasure. This space will allow you to try your Skills and magic in a safe environment.”

“How do I even use magic? All I have been practicing is how to move as a [Unicorn] and my [Charge] Skill.”

“Hmmm…since we are talking about magic, which will involve the understanding of Skills and Skill Points, this works wonders for the Readers, who are voting on the Top Two Skills you start with.

First, magic, just like any Skill, has a level. Some Skills only have five, while others have twenty. Once reaching (LV: MAX), Some Skills will evolve into a better Skill. For example, [Observe] will evolve to [Analyze].

Leveling up a Skill will add benefits to it. A (LV: 2) [Sight] will see farther than a (LV: 1) [Sight].

This is where your magic spells come in. Each level will grant a new spell. But, there are other things to know.

Skills you start off with are called Primary Skills. Using a Skill Point on a Primary Skill will create a new Skill. You can do this three times for each Skill. These Skills created from Primary Skills are called Secondary Skills. Skill Points can only be used on these kinds of Skills once. Tertiary Skills, created from Secondary Skills, cannot be used with Skill Points.

This system is strange, for you will not know what you will get. Usually the Secondary Skill is obviously related to the Primary Skill, but the Tertiary can be fused with other Skill Branches.

Let us say you used Skill Points on your [Nature Magic].  You cannot use them on your actual spells since they are the same as Tertiary Skills. But after using the Skill Point, you created [Nature’s Blessing]. Within a heavily planted area, you will see an increase in stats. By using a Skill Point on [Nature’s Blessing], it might evolve using your [Rainbow Magic].”

“OOH! I see, so even if the magic seems iffy, it might become something amazing later?!”

“Yes. But unfortunately, you have no way of knowing what your first spells are. Yet, anyways. Right now, Evil Ginger has become a [King]. His [Kingdom] consists of some crazy, eccentric, and weird inventors. He used his gift, [Book of Innovative Discoveries].”

“So he also got the choice for a set within a something, or whatever it’s called?”

“Indeed. As will I.”

“Huh?! You’re leaving as well?”

“Not quite yet. Anyways, Evil is making way into discovering ways for people to use their Points and know their spells. I believe by now, he has created something like those Guild Cards you see in novels. Or is it an Orb? I do not remember, unluckily.

But besides creating all these modern marvels, he is also trying to kill off all the [Unicorns]. Right now, there is a lot of trouble. Most other countries do not like Evil, calling him the [Tyrant King]. They tried hiding the [Unicorns], because of their purity and power, but when Evil found out, he went to war. Most countries will only turn a blind eye to the [Unicorns], now.

Maybe in the later years, when progress slows, or war is not so prevalent, you can be born there. But the longer you wait, the less chances of you having a diverse amount of lives to choose to reincarnate into.

What I am saying is, it is time to choose the time frame in which you are born into. Will it be a battle torn Warring States Period? Or will it be a sort of peaceful Medieval Era? How about an Industrial Revolutionary time? Steam Punk, possibly? Or how about a more modern time?”

“Wow…that’s a lot of choices…”

“Indeed. The Readers have a long ways to go before any major events happen. The Creator did tell me something about a change…but I do not think that will happen until you are reborn in the new world.”

“Ok…umm…how long will Evil live?”

“Hmm? I do not think he will die of old age, if that is what you are asking. He has a Special Skill that lets his body live as long as his soul.”

“How long is that?”

“Forever.”

“HUUH?!”

“He and I are strange. We had no bodies to begin with, so we are more like souls ourselves. Even if we did not choose a body, I doubt we would be troubled. If our body died, we would just get a new one.”

“I guess that means Evil will be trying his hardest to kill all the [Unicorns].”

“Not necessarily. The further in time you are born, there will be more chances of you living safely while young, although there will be less [Unicorns] for you to become. Right now, everyone is afraid of Evil, but soon, others will be able to fight him. He also has a difficulty perceiving time.

This way, he might fall asleep for several hundred years and would not even know you were there.”

“How long will I live?”

“However long your body allows.”

“...So I start off mortal?”

“Indeed. Then, through training, you can live for several hundred, maybe even thousands, of years.”

“Wow…”

“Speaking of life, I must be getting my own. I am pretty sure this one wants his body back.”

“??? What does that mean?”

“See you later, Josh. I must go and make sure Evil does not ruin the world.”

“Wait…”

At that moment, Dead began to glow green, as did his eyes. He was surrounded by the energy as it seemed to circle his body before flying through the ceiling. Josh looked back at Dead and saw his eyes were yellow again.

“Dead? What happened?”

“Whew~~. It’s been awhile, although you probably don’t remember me.”

Dead’s(?) tuxedo suit started to dissolve as it turned into some sort of mist, clinging to his bones. The black mist seemed to shroud the skeleton. Eventually, the mist transformed into a hooded cloak. He seemed more imposing, with his yellow eyes appearing to bore a hole into Josh’s very soul.

“Who…are you?”

“Why I am the Grim Reaper. Formerly known as Death.”

Hehehe, I, Death, will be presiding over  Josh's life, huh? Not that I care. Ever since this damn author wrote me into being, I have been drawing the short stick. Not anymore! Time to stretch these old bones and have some fun!
