Chapter 9 (OLD)

I woke the next morning and got ready to continue heading towards the next mausoleum and grinding along the way. We left the building we were in and I had Vaeda scout ahead as always for clusters of undead hoping they’d lead me towards the next mausoleum. Vaeda flew away into the distance and came back with the news I’d been hoping for he’d found more undead,

“Hey Greg, I found two more of those Draugr knights about 20 minutes from here what do you want to do?”

“I want to try taking them on and see how much experience we can get from it. I’d like to be at least level thirty before we take on the other mini-boss.” I replied.

“Okay, I’ll lead the way, follow me.” He said as he took flight.

My bodyguards and I continued on walking while searching for the undead knights until I saw the knights in question in the distance. I could barely make them out. Maybe I needed to improve my perception next. I dismissed the idea from my head. I had decided last night as I fell asleep that I wouldn’t spend any stat points until I had gotten my next class skill. We continued forward until I could get a better look at the knights. They were standing out in the open in a courtyard, There looked to be a large mansion-like structure behind them. I would have to explore that after our fight.

I cast Cloak Of Shadows on myself and told the big guy and my knight to move to intercept the Draugr knights while I snuck around them. I went to the edge of the courtyard and the undead had still yet to notice me so I got closer to the mansion. When I got closer I began to marvel at the structure. It was a perfect example of gothic architecture. Long columns held the place up and there were sharp edges everywhere. There was a walkway into the building surrounded by gargoyles. God, I hope those things aren’t alive. I was stuck just admiring the place when Vaeda called down to me to say that my Draugr and golem were engaging the enemy. Sneaking back into the courtyard I could see the battle start.

The two Draugr knights equipped in full armor and have bastard swords same my own. My golem begins the fight with a horizontal slash at the left Draugr Knights neck. It blocks it easily as my Draugr engages the other knight. My Draugr is aggressively slashing at its opponent but it is flawlessly parrying every blow. This is intense I think with a grin. My golem goes to hack at the Draugr and it blocks his attack sliding the ax to the side and then stabbing my golem in its shoulder. If my golem was an actual living breathing creature maybe that would incapacitate it but unfortunately for the Draugr that is not the case. My golem just pushes itself through the sword closer towards his opponent dropping his ax for a chance at a melee. It begins pounding on its armor and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be doing much. The Draugr is desperately trying to rip its sword out of my golems shoulder but it’s not working.

“Rip its helmet off big guy” I yell at him.

The Draugr’s both turn to look at me and at this point my Cloak Of Shadows is no longer concealing me. Sure I’m still hard to spot but now they have a vague sense of where I am. As they’re distracted my Draugr runs its sword through its foe’s head destroying the helmet it was wearing. My golem is now trying to rip the Draugr’s helmet off as it struggles to pull its sword out to no avail.

“Draugr finish this!” I yell.

My knight turns towards the Draugr that is wrestling with my golem and slashes the head off of it. Complete victory on our part. As I head towards my champions I get a blue box notification now that we’re out of battle.

I dismiss the blue box and order my minions to follow me as we head towards the mansion to explore. I’m hoping that maybe there’s loot in there or something valuable that could help me in my quest to get stronger.

It takes a couple of hours but Vaeda and I can’t seem to find anything. There’s a multitude of bedrooms and a kitchen, unfortunately, everything is falling apart. While Vaeda and I are searching I have the big guy and knight just watching the front door for enemies. I look around the kitchen and find nothing that could help me save a kitchen knife covered in dust. This could help me with my cooking at night. If you could even call slicing a bird up and burning it cooking. After determining there was nothing of value in the place I asked Vaeda to search out for undead to find in the vicinity to our new base of operations.

Over the course of the next week, my minions and I killed about 23 more of the Draugr Knights and had leveled up 4 times due to it. We defeated them by leading them away from each other or blindsiding them in a melee. I had to replace my Draugr twice due to our skirmishes. After our final bout with two of them, we headed back to the mansion for a nights rest. I started to look at the battle notifications.

Congratulations to host for reaching level 30

The host may now select a new class skill.

Would the host like to look at available skills?

“Yes”

Frost Shard Uncommon Active The host uses their mana to call forth a shard of ice that pierces enemies and has a chance to freeze the area it hits. Cost: 10 Mana Decay Missile Uncommon Active Host fires a magic missile made of decay magic that begins to slowly rot anything it touches. Cost: 10 Mana Acid Orb Uncommon Active Host summons an orb of acid they can shoot at their enemies melting it slowly. Cost: 10 Mana

“Hey, Vaeda this time I got three attacking spells; Frost Shard, Decay Missile, and Acid Orb. Looks like the system really wants me to have an attacking spell. I don’t really think any of them are a bad choice and I’d be happy to have any of them”

“Yeah all of them are quite good for an early necromancer such as yourself. I personally like the idea of Decay Missile because you could use it to also get through obstacles. However, the freeze chance of Frost Shard could come in handy against multiple enemies. And then even Acid Orb has its uses as it could be used to melt armor or undead that have shields.”

“Dude, you’re not making this choice any easier. They all sound so cool and each would help me out in different ways but I think I know which one I’ll pick.”

As we were talking we arrived back at the mansion and I headed upstairs towards one of the bedrooms I had found that still had a working non-decayed bed. I laid down on it and contemplated which skill would prove more useful right here and now. What would save my ass in a pickle? What I could pull out to turn the tables in a fight? This skill would be the first skill that allowed me to do some real damage and become a true mage, wielding awesome and powerful magic. Even though I was exhausted from grinding that day I stayed up late finally deciding which skill I would pick. I picked the skill and fell asleep content to distribute my stat points in the morning.
