Chapter 6: Beasts in Darkness

Chapter 6: Beasts in Darkness

Leiu was surprised as most of the classes were special, he really didn't expect this. He didn't think he did something incredibly special that warranted such a multitude of choices. Alternatively, it could be that the requirements for theses classes weren't difficult, meaning that many other players would get presented with this as well.

What caught his eyes the most were the 'Epic' and 'Unique' Classes, the others weren't bad too, but if going by rarity, then 'Epic' and 'Unique' looked more appealing.

"Hey, old man, can't I see what each Class does?"

The old man glanced at him, somewhat annoyed and said

"What? So many good classes are proposed to you and you still want an explanation for them? Not everything is easy, young man, it's already amazing that you have this many extraordinary class choices, others would even dream of having just a 'Rare' class, just trust your gut and choose what you think suits you!"

Although he seemed a bit angry, the old man praised Leiu and resumed reading his dusty book.

Time crept by yet Leiu didn't move as he pondered about what to choose, choosing the main class is one of the most important decisions in every similar game. Eventually, after eliminating one by one, only two candidates were left.

'Blade Dancer and Dark Knight... Hmm what to choose?'

The two classes seemed very interesting and powerful, he leaned more to Blade Dancer. With how he fought previously, he judged that it would suit him best, as for Dark Knight, it was a complete mystery to him.

First of all, what was a knight? Usually, a knight class would hold a shield and a one-handed sword, maybe a spear or a lance, that's what most games do at least, but this one was a Dark Knight.

A mysterious and Unique class, it really intrigued someone as curious as Leiu, who wanted to unravel everything and learn about what is unknown, and this class definitely fits that criteria.

"Hehehe, I told you before, didn't I?"

The old man smirked as if already knowing what Leiu chose.

"I choose the Dark Knight"

The old man nodded and replied

"I knew you would pick it, hehe, but it's not so easy to obtain it, first you need to finish the class quest."

Leiu just waved his hand in annoyance and said

"Just give me the quest."

"Alright alright, no need to have such a bad attitude. At least the other one was polite"

The old man dismissively waved his hand, and a message popped in front of Leiu.

Dark Knight (Unique) : The Dark Knight Class is a heavy damage dealer class, yet it can have decent defensive capabilities with some unique attacks. Used only once in the past, it is a manifestation of Primordial Darkness through the Alpha System.

Quest : Complete the 3 trials

Difficulty : A

"Old man! What's with this A difficulty, it's just a class quest."

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

The old man grinned while responding to the infuriated Leiu

"young man, don't blame me now, it's you who chose this class so it's to be expected for the quest to be A difficulty. It's a Unique class! Furthermore, if you fail, then you can't retry and it will be removed from the class choices along with the other good classes. Either you succeed or you'll have to become a Swordsman. Good luck!"

Before Leiu could snap at him, his vision turned dark and his body felt heavy. He was teleported to another place, which momentarily startled him.

He was teleported into a dark place, there was no roof or nearby walls, he didn't even know where he was, the only thing he could feel was the ground; it didn't feel like a forest or a cave, it was a smooth flat ground so he had to be inside some kind of building.

Because of the darkness, he couldn't even see the ground, all he saw was darkness.

5 minutes passed yet nothing happened, no sound came out of any place, no enemies and no messages, Leiu already started roaming, but the place seemed endless.

After an additional 5 minutes, Leiu grew accustomed to his unilluminated surroundings, allowing him to see a bit.

'Am I supposed to find a way out or what?'

...

After half an hour, Leiu became annoyed rather than confused. Remembering the two odd NPCs from earlier, Leiu feared that this might be a bug and that he would be stuck here forever.

As he was cursing in his mind, there finally was some welcome change. Leiu was feeling delighted yet angry at the same time, mainly because the change that happened was actually an attack from an unknown assailant.

Leiu didn't know what exactly attacked him, but he was certain it was a beast. Fortunately, he managed to react in time, not to dodge of course, but to unsheathe his Steel Sword and block the incoming attack.

Long sharp claws, sharper than the Forest Wolf's, and even longer. Leiu barely managed to resist, his body staggering backwards from the force of the attack.

The 'thing' that attacked him then backed away and blended with the darkness yet again. It was really annoying, as even with his eyes which were now used to the darkness, he couldn't exactly pinpoint the location of the beast. Still, it wasn't entirely impossible to locate it as he could feet its audible footsteps.

Within seconds, however, Leiu's expression turned worse as numerous footsteps echoed all around him.

'This isn't fair.' He grumbled while continuously turning around.

Leiu knew, more than anyone, exactly how strong he was and was fully aware of his weaknesses, judging by the precious exchange, he was confident that he would be unable to defeat these unseen beasts were they to attack at the same time. Even if they were wolves, it would be hard but not impossible as his stats increased considerably.

If those enemies were wolves, finishing them waspossible, but Leiu's luck was bad enough for him to encounter such enemies, totally blending with the darkness.

While tightly holding his Steel Sword, Leiu who never liked talking, much less yelling out loud, let out a roar as if trying to intimidate or provoke the beasts into attacking.

......

..

"Ah ah"

Leiu gasped for breath; it has been more than half an hour since the beasts showed up, and what seemed impossible for him earlier, became possible, somehow, someway. He, too, couldn't believe he survived. The beasts that attacked him had huge frames, which worked to his advantage, they couldn't attack him from all directions. At most, 3 would attack him at the same time, and, naturally, he couldn't dodge all of them simultaneously, which was why he already spent 8 of his 10 Health Potion.

Messages popped up countless times, he ignored them, but he knew that he leveled up a few times, and that was because, each time someone levels up, some of their health, mana and stamina recovered.

But he wouldn't be able to survive much longer than 10 more minutes. It seemed there was no end to those beasts, and though only 2 hits were enough to kill them, they were exceptionally fast and one hit from them decreased his Health by 6 or 7 points.

His leather armor, which is trash from the very beginning, was bloody and already destroyed, the bonus stats of it was gone and it was mere decoration right now.

Even his Steel Sword was almost destroyed, it only had 5 durability left.

As he was heavily breathing, Leiu thrust his sword at the incoming beast, landing a critical hit and killing it on the spot.

These dark-skinned ferocious beasts were similar to tigers, if not a bit bigger and coated in a raven-black fur. Their most distinguishable feature was their abnormally long claws, which was arched downwards and sharp enough to rip through the armor.

Fortunately, they weren't creatures like wolves, who were clever enough to team up to defeat an enemy/ Each attacked when it felt there was an opportunity.

If they attacked him from all sides and teamed up even for a bit, they could have killed him from the very beginning, but they were not clever or intelligent at all, they only relied on beastly instincts.

..

As Leiu killed another beast, he quickly leapt back, avoiding a dangerous claw from a beast in his right, then, with quick motions, thrust his sword two times in a row at the same spot. The beast, hit in a vital spot, lost of all of its health and died from that fatal strike.
