Chapter 4: Forest Wolf

Chapter 4: Forest Wolf

Leiu was in a dilemma; He wanted to go back to the village, but he unwittingly went deeper into the forest and stumbled upon what could potentially be a Boss-type monster. It looked much more threatening than the big rabbit.

Forest Wolf: Lv13

It was to be expected to meet a wolf-type enemy in the beginning, most games like do this, however, Leiu was not confident enough to win. First, because the only decent gear he had was the Steel Sword and the boots, and second, he had no skills whatsoever and had only been fighting weak beginner-level enemies.

Plus, any weapon or gear had something what the System labaled as Durability. For his boots, or any defensive gear, it would take a lot of time for the Durability to hit zero, but for weapons, if it was continuously used to block strong attacks, its durability would rapidly fall.

Leiu has been using this sword for more than 2 hours, the bronze sword, being very bad, didn't have any durability, however, this Steel Sword had one.

Steel Sword Durability: 8/12

It decreased by 4 after all those fights. For others it might be slow, but for Leiu, the decrease was insanely fast, so that was another reason that made him resist the urge to fight.

..

After much deliberation, Leiu decided not to back off. He weighed the pros and cons and chose to take the challenge even if the chances of success were minuscule.

Although he spent some time in deep thought, he never let the nearby wolf escape his sight as, naturally, he didn't want to be ambushed. In fact, He wanted to sneak-attack the wolf. A hard thing to do with his limited experience, nevertheless, it was worth a try.

Slowly and cautiously, Leiu approached the Forest Wolf while trying to keep his steps as silent as possible. His breathing was slightly rapid and nervousness was plastered all over his pale face.

The wolf was hungrily devouring a rabbit, seemingly unaware of the apporaching human.

After two minutes, Leiu successfully closed in the distance and hid behind a relatively big tree. Now, he was dangerously close to his quarry.

After a deep breath, Leiu revealed him: The Steel Sword was tightly clenched in his right hand, and his eyes were fixated on the Forest Wolf. The distance between the two was, at most, 200 feet.

A bold and rapid charge, which was reasonably fast, but for Leiu, it seemed to take ages and the enemy jerked its head upwards, its ears twitching ever-so-slightly. By the time the beast looked at him, Leiu's blade was already within range so he unhesitantly struck at the target.

Blood gushed out from the wolf's dark fur, however, it was still able to move. With an enraged howl, it jumped backwards.

Only when he heard the howl did Leiu think about wolf and how they would usually travel in packs. Since this one might be a 'Boss', he hoped that it was alone and that howl was merely because of the wound it sustained.

He already launched his attack, so running away now was pointless.

After backing away to stabilize its body, the Forest Wolf leapt at Leiu, who also charged at it. Its eyes contained anger and rage, obviously not happy as it was disturbed mid-lunch.

With its two front limbs, it used its claws to slash at the incoming Leiu, who was a bit surprised by the Wolf's significantly superior speed. In an instant, he knew that no manner of manoeuvrability would allow him to dodge the incoming claws.

With gritted teeth, Leiu thrust the sword, aiming at one of wolf's eyes.

All those battles against Bees and Rabbits, which already surpassed 100 fight really honed his beginner skills, his precision in attacking became much better and his movement and reflexes became faster and more flexible.

The thrust was precise, and fortunately for Leiu, it directly hit the wolf's right eye, blinding it. Although he blinded the wolf's right eye, that came at a big cost as the claws injured his shoulder, which made him bleed, his health descending by a whopping 7 points. The pain wasn't too intense, but it was more noticeable than the stab from the rabbit's horn.

Desperate, Leiu retreated before the claws could dig deeper into his skin and bones. As blood leaked from his fresh would, Leiu carefully circled around the enemy, which didn't aggressively charge at him again, instead choosing a bare its teeth and growl menacingly.

Leiu positioned himself on the blinded right side of the wolf and then rushed at it again. In response, the Forest Wolf lowered its body and then performed a jump while opening its mouth wide and preparing to bite the human's neck.

Leiu knew its intentions, so before the wolf struck him, he dodged to the side and pulled back the extended hand that was holding the Steel Sword. Thereafter, he used all the strength he could possibly muster and diagonally hacked at the beast.

First, he chopped his sword ruthlessly at the right side of the wolf's body, then he slashed again at the same place, to deal even more damage, while doing so, he heard a ringing sound, but he completely ignored it and jumped back yet again. Two succesively attacks were his limits, but more than that, the wolf's claws were coming at him, thus forcing him to retreat.

The Forest Wolf became even more enraged as it received continuous damage, seeing that its attack failed, it ferociously jumped towards the retreating Leiu, intending to finish him off.

Albeit wounded, the wolf's mobility remained the same. It was incredibly agile, moreso than Leiu, whose retreating figure was sluggish and full of opening. Knowing that there wasn't room for another evasive manoeuvres, Leiu stabbed his sword at the wolf.

Leiu's vision was covered in red his blade penetrated through the wolf's abdomen and came from the back. He felt the beast' body turn limb as it fell on him, making him thud against the ground.

System notification popped in front of him, however, he ignored them, hastily looted the dead wolf then dashed away. Amidst his sprinting, he gulped his only Health Potion but inwardly cursed when he saw his shoulder would still bleeding. If the wolf had indeed called for the rest of its pack, they would be able to track his scent with ease.

While running and keeping an eye on his rear, Leiu never stopped, but even after 5 minutes, he could still hear the howls of 3 wolves, actively chasing after him, what was worse was that the distance between them was shortening by the second.

Two more minutes passed after which Leiu finally stopped running: the distance between them shortened by a huge margin. The wolves were less than a hundred feet away, and Leiu knew that he wouldn't be able to outrun them. Thus, he changed his tactic and decided to fight, though he wasn't going to directly confront them.

One wolf who was the closest finally arrived near the smell, it first stopped a couple of feet away from it, then sneakily advanced and jumped from a nearby bush toward the smell, since it was a thick forest and with many bushes and high trees, it couldn't see the enemy with its eyes, but it had confidence in its sense of smell.

However, what faced it was only a ragged and bloodied cloth, it was on the ground and reeked of blood, the wolf confusedly stared at it, only to feel an intense pain on its neck, which made it stumble and shake. It resisted and tried to move but the pain become more and more intense.

Leiu had used his cloth as a mean to lure and trick the wolf, then he climbed a tree and waited for the wolf, even without the cloth, they could track him, but his cloth was full of blood so their attention would probably be focused on the cloth because of the strong smell.

The good thing was that his guess was correct, a wolf tried to sneak on him and jumped on the cloth, so Leiu took the moment of confusion to jump from the tree and onto the Wolf, with the force of gravity and all his strength, the sword went deep into the wolf's upper back, decreasing its health by half.

Leiu grinned and took out the Steel Sword from the deep wound, but that wasn't the end, he stabbed again on the same place, making blood gush out endlessly, pouring on his entire body.

The wolf, as a last desperate struggle, tried shaking him off from its back but it was useless as it soon laid on the ground, motionless and soundless. All it took him is 3 more stabs, his health decreased by 3 probably because of the wolf's slamming and moving around when he was on its back, but it was worth it.

Level up! All stats (+1)

As he saw this, he was a bit delighted, he didn't focus on the early messages, but now he knew that he was , at least, Level 10, so he felt proud and delighted, but the fight was not over yet, there was still 2 remaining wolves.

After a lot of struggle and schemes, Leiu managed to get rid of the two remaining wolves the same way he did with the first one.

His appearance was pathetic and scary right now, blood-covered him from head to toe, his Steel Sword was also bloodied and only had 2 durabilitiy left. Fortunately, it didn't break mid-fight or else he would really have died.

Leiu was extremely tired, a lot of his stamina was used climbing, attacking sneakily, jumping, dashing, but for some reason, he felt happy, proud and more delighted than ever. For him, what he did was a not easily-achievable accomplishment. He was feeling smug, thinking that there might not be other Players capable of doing what he did.

With the danger out of the way, Leiu spent 15 minutes resting and checking the System Logs.
