Chapter 13: Holy Slime

Chapter 13: Holy Slime

Blinding light flooded my senses, a star burning with intense wrath that washed over me in a way that made me almost sick to my stomach. Like a queasiness that bubbled up from within that made me want to vomit.

Slimey was undergoing some form of 177013, a metamorphosis, one that brushed against my senses as a notification tumbled out of the light to hit me square in my rubber mind.

When the light simmered down, Slimey was still… Slimey.

Nothing changed. At least on the surface, besides increasing in three levels and some new skills and levels, Slimey looked no different than before.

All that for Holy attribute? And here I was expecting some enormous visible change…

Still, the corpse of the nun was a blessing it seemed, more abilities in Slimey’s repertoire that would no doubt be put into service cleansing the world.

Observing my minion, Slimey seemed happy, the monster bouncing up and down with the nun’s remains completely dissolved, the only trace of the woman being her outfit.

Not sure why Slimey didn't dissolve the dress but it was clearly garbage that needed disposal.

ANNNNND Of course, Slimey refused to dissolve the dress, the giant jelly repeating REWARD! REWARD! REWARD! Over and over again in its mind like a child.

Fine. If you want to keep it, suit yourself. But no leaving it around!

Slimey wiggled, the creature suddenly embracing me entirely into its being.

Yes yes yes, I’m a benevolent being, NOW BACK TO WORK!

Observing my slimes purify the area and cleanse the filth of my domain, a thought occurred to me as I reviewed Slimey’s changes and the events that had transpired over the last few hours.

The nun had been injured, unarmed, and weakened. Even at full health, judging from her wounds there was no way she came into the demonlord’s domain alone.

Which meant… there were others.

Most likely corpses considering the state of their healer. After all! The cleric was the most powerful of any adventurer composition! And if the healer died… Well, it was only a matter of time before other bodies started dropping.

Other bodies that could be fed to my minions for skills…

Am I a bad person?

No! Of course not! I’m not even a person anymore! Plus, those poor souls would want their bodies cleaned! Cleansed of their putrid filth and brought to heel under my banner!

Hmmm. But now the question remained, what lay in the darkness beyond my domain? I had of course sent my minions out to scrub, clean, and evangelize the random slimes to restore them to their natural state, but for the most part, I had no idea what lay beyond the sewer or what even became of the Demon Lord for that matter.

It was time to change that.

After all, knowledge is power and I want to be smart.

With every threat around or near my immediate domain gone or subjected, it was time for me to brave beyond the confines of my domain. To sally forth into the uncharted black abyss like a pioneer upon the Mayflower, searching for the New World.

Of course, more than half of the pilgrims died when they embarked, and many of my slimes are likely to die but it’s a sacrifice… I am more than willing to make.

In short, it was time for an expedition.

At the very edge of my domain, I sat atop Slimey within a house shaped with its body that was pocketed with windows.

Behind Slimey was my entourage of minions, with Dave situated at the front as the party tank who had a rotting tree branch in one hand, and a brick in the other, crude weapons I know, but we work with what we have.

To protect Dave, I had several slimes draped across the Krocotaur, it wasn’t much, but each of them had physical resistance, allowing the upright croc some form of protection even if it was unhappy with passengers.

Alright! Time to sally forth!

Bracing myself, I inwardly cringed before I intook air, the putrid smog filling my innards with it’s rancid bile, the smell and TASTE! OH THE TASTE! Akin to moldy gym socks wrapped in microwave fish then smeared with butt chocolate.

Every fiber of my being shook, my rubber duck eyes actually releasing tears as I did my best to ignore the taste on my non-existant taste buds and let out a loud and powerful-

“SQUEEAK!”

My voice echoed, squeakerlocation pinging an image in my mind of the void that lay beyond my domain. The image was clear in my mind, like invisible lines drawn around a black canvas that made up the drawing with each half-second that passed, erasing more and more of the image.

Nothing ventured I guess.

With the painting of the tunnel in mind, I directed Dave forward, the large croc leading my small army of slimes into the unknown darkness of the sewers.

ELSEWHERE.

*CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!*

Racing through the narrow pipes of the sewer, Lhikan went wide-eyed before he leaned his body back, his back dropping to hit his legs as he slid underneath a large polearm that aimed to bisect him.

A veteran of multiple fronts, Lhikan quickly rose to his feet, his breathing even and steady out of his gas mask as he spun to his left, his arms crossed and deflecting a rusted blade with his steel gauntlets.

He sent a kick out, his steel boots connecting with a skeleton and collapsing the monster into a pile of bones before he took off again, running away from the skeletal horde pursuing him with the pile of bones he knocked over already reforming.

*CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!*

“Damn it.” Lhikan groaned, leaping over a chasm that he nearly fell into if not for his glowstone illuminating his way.

The skeletons weren’t much of a threat to Lhikan one on one, the real issue here was the sheer volume of animated undead, the creatures rolling around in a crude ball that bounced off each wall of the sewer in its pursuit to consume him.

He clambered up the pipe, continuing his retreat before he stopped at another edge, this one leading to a stream of green sludge.

*CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!*

Lhikan spun, frown on his face as he watched the sphere of undead rolling down the pipe towards him.

“Well…. Shit.” Lhikan swore, before unclipping his plate armor, tossing it to the side as he grabbed a syringe from his bag of holding, stabbing the needle into his thigh and wincing as scales began to crop up on his skin.

Buffed, Lhikan leapt into the sludge below.

*CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!*

Lhikan hit the stream of sewage, the bubbling acid immediately tearing away at his hardened skin and soft eyeballs that were luckily buffed by the serum he injected into himself.

“UHK!” Lhikan let out, bubbles forming out of his gasmask as he clawed his way to the surface of the bubbling acid. Thankfully his oxygen box was resistant to the acid, the materials made to withstand such hazardous environments.

Lhikan swam his way to the left, avoiding the sudden shadow that hit the water, dozens of skeletons sinking into the sludge with their red eyes glaring at the knight.

Thankfully, the creatures couldn’t swim, their density coupled with their undead traits allowing for Lhikan to escape through the bubbling acid that tore away at the skeletons.

Now away from the skeleton ball, Lhikan swam to the surface, breaking the water tension and reaching out towards the slick wall, blinking rapidly to dispel the acid in his eyes as he held his light stone high.

Climbing out of the acid ridden waste, Lhikan laid himself on the wet stone, most of his clothes tattered and burned away with his hair a mess and his skin red.

Lhikan took a breath, reaching down into his bag of holding to replace the mana stone powering his oxygen box.

I need to find Natalie…

Lhikan blinked hard, the middle-aged man rolling onto his side before sluggishly rising to his feet and checking for the item in the bag he and Zak”naufen had fought to the death for. The one thing that could guarantee salvation, safety, an item Krota cherished but never got to use due to his unexpected death.

A riftstone.

A magical item that could teleport its user to a prerecorded destination. The problem is, it only worked for one person.

“Damn girl… where'd you run off to…” Lhikan groaned, clutching his aching side.

He walked for some time, taking a moment to turn on the eating function of the oxygen box that projected a field of air around him at the expense of mana charge.

Lhikan bit into the stale jerky, taking a moment to savor the taste that could very well be the last thing he'd eat.

The knight sighed, placing his mask back on and continuing his journey, searching for his charge.

*Squeak!*

Lhikan froze, his weary eyes darting left and right, wondering what that squeak belonged to.

*Squeak!*

There it was again, that squeak, the sound laced with mana that made Lhikan uneasy.

Something was lurking in the dark.

Lhikan stepped quietly, another squeak echoing from the darkness. The knight’s hands tightened, one hand on his newly acquired black dagger he'd taken from a non-cooperative Drowthraki while the other held his light stone.

*Squeak!*

There it was again, this time louder, more pronounced with Lhikan tensing up as the ooze of a slime came into focus.

“Oh… it's just a sewer slime.” Lhikan said, throwing the enchanted dagger at the tiny blue slime that shattered its core. The black weapon cut through the monster easily, slicing its red core in two before the weapon returned to his hand.

Odd. First time seeing a blue slime. Lhikan said to himself, sheathing his dagger as he turned his head and-

*SQUEAK!*

Lhikan flinched, the remaining hairs on his body rising as he felt a rush of targeted anger.

Suddenly movement, the shift of wind alerting Lhikan that something was on the prowl.

He held his dagger aloft, eyes darting left and right, the tension on his shoulders rising with every second with Lhikan nearly falling back into the river if not for correcting his footing at the last second.

Then he saw it, blue ooze. The sign of a slime that made the tension fly from his body.

“Oh, its just a sli-…” Lhikan trailed off, the massive blue slime coming into full view as it approached and threatened to swallow him hole. But that wasn’t what caught Lhikan’s heart in his chest, no. What gave the veteran pause was the black religious dress that was swirling around in the mass of a mutated monster.
