Really!

Demon

Demon blinked one minute she had been standing at the man’s side and the next she had been booted out the door. Looking around the dark and desolate hallway she blinked again. Yep he had booted her out. How dare he. Turning around she stared at the door ignoring the drifting sounds of the radio to focus on listening as the man moved around in the bathroom. What was he doing? Why couldn’t she join him? She didn’t want to be here all alone. Standing on her hind legs she stretched up and tried to reach the knob. Meowing in effort she stretched as far as she could go. Scooting her back legs closer to the door. Only to still come up short. Meowing in frustration she sat back down and studied the door. Tilting her head she heard a click and whoosh followed by footsteps that were coming closer to her. Perhaps the man was coming to open the door. Scratching at the door with her front paws she meowed. “Come open the door! Come open the door! Come open the door!” Pausing for breath she waited her front paws braced on the door her ears twisting and turning as she listened. All she could hear was water. What was he doing now?! Irritated she began scratching at the door with a violence determined to make him open the door. He would pay. This time he would pay. Ignoring the looming isolation of the hallway she scratched at the door.

Fred felt kind of bad. He had after all thrown the cat out. Okay that was a bit of an exaggeration. He had pushed the cat out gently with his foot. But still the look of betrayal that he had glimpsed in her eyes as he slammed the door into her face was one that tore at something inside him. Cringing at her meows and scratching of the door. He tried to move just a touch faster as he washed his hands and pulled out his supplies for his shower. He hoped she would keep the gentler attitude she had before but Fred wasn’t holding his breath. Sighing he decided to hug the memory close and continue on with his preparations. Feeling his muscles tighten and his guilt grow with every heartfelt meow coupled with vigorous scratching. Ignore it. Ignore it. Focus. Shower cap, wash cloth, soap, big towel. Was he missing anything? Nope. Grabbing his packed caddy he hung it on the hook by the shower. Turned on the water, tested it’s temperature and flow, he quickly discarded his clothes, pulled on his robe that had never before moved from the hook on the back of the bathroom door and opened the door. Before it had fully opened Demon had shoved her head through and shoved it the rest of the way open with her body. Looking down he stared into eyes that still held the look of betrayal. Then he watched in disbelief as the cat jumped onto the toilet seat and onto the counter top and staring directly into his eyes. Deliberately turned her back and began grooming herself. Her tail swaying gently as if in a breeze along the cabinet doors. “You know I can still see you in the mirror right?” muttered Fred. Demon just turned her body so she was now facing the wall.
