Gotta Go

Fred

Fred looked down at his cat as she stared up at him. She looked so very cute lying on the floor like that. If Fred wasn’t seeing things and who knew at this late or is it early now of an hour. She seemed to be smiling up at him. Snorting at his own dersion Fred stood up straight and stretching once more began to walk out the door. Making sure to high step over the still prone lying cat. Pausing to turn off the light in the room he moved down the hallway. Stopping by the bathroom where he went about his before bed routine. Ignoring the eyes of the cat as it padded quietly beside him. He was in the middle of brushing his teeth when he felt it. Not the claws or teeth that he was expecting but the softest brush of fur along his ankle. He froze. Unsure if what he felt was real. But there it was again. He looked down and to the side to see the cat looking back up at him. Her eyes seeming to be innocent and guiless pools that sucked him in. Becoknoing him to love and nuture this small creature. A spell unlike any that he before felt seemed to be weaving between them. Broken only when the sound of his radio alarm blared to raucous life playing oldies hip hop. Blinking Fred shook his head, registering in the back of his head that it was now six o’clock in the morning. Looking back down to find the cat’s attention now on the music blasting from his bedroom. That was weird thought Fred as he continued brushing his teeth. Making sure to brush his tongue before spitting the foamy liquid from his mouth. He grabbed his floss and began the push, scoop and pull method he’d absorbed his dentist office used to clean between his teeth. Finishing quickly he threw the string away wondering as he did every time he completed his routine what the long-term effect of the floss would be in the world. As he turned back and twisted the knob for hot water he forgot the question in his need to focus on what came next. Cupping his hands under the water stream he waited until they had been halfway filled with water before slurping it up and rinsing his mouth with it. Spitting it out he rinsed the sink and using his wash cloth wiped both his face and mouth. Making sure to clear any debris from his beard. His eyes quickly scanned over his face making sure that no speak of toothpaste or food waste had been missed. Satisfied with his inspection he turned to use the restroom. But was hampered by the cat who seemed determined to stick to his side. Perplexed, he stared at the cat. He debated asking her what her problem was but even though she was annoying him he had a hunch that to ask her was to invite the previous version of Demon back and why do that? So taking smaller steps and being careful to not kick the cat or step on her he made his way to the toilet and froze midway to opening his pants. Looking down he found the cat once again staring at him. Fred felt himself break out in a sweat. While he didn’t want to do anything that would cause Demon to revert back to her old self he also didn’t want the cat watching him peeing. He wanted to force himself to just do it after all it was only an animal. But, but the eyes of the cat were boring into him. Maybe if she had been a guy cat he could do it. A tom no problem but a lady cat even if she was a mean cat. He just couldn’t. Maybe he could hold it. But as he stepped away from the toilet his body constricted threatening to cause him to wet his pants should he wait too long to use the toilet.

Without a second thought Fred quickly pushed Demon out of the bathroom taking care to be gentle and grateful for the first time since purchasing the house for the slick tile floor. Slamming the door before she could get her bearings, Fred hopped over to the toilet and handled his business.
