I walked up to my son's apartment, barely being able to contain my excitement. After many attempts and lots of boring talks I finally managed to get my son an interview for a job at his favorite game company, "The New Era' They were looking for beta testers for this big update, and I knew my son can't stand conventional work, to be frank I don't fucking blame him! I don't like working either, and I never had the heart to force my boy into working to his death, I'd gladly take that off his shoulders, but at the same time if he can make some money beta testing a game he loves, and help support himself, then I think that's a fair plan. I know he'll accept too, he's always apologizing to me, and I just feel so bad for him. Maybe I've failed him as a parent.. I don't know.
Knocking hard to wake his butt up, knowing his usual late night tendencies, I waited. I waited far too long and was about to bash the damn door open
" Ahh, Miss Fujimoto, checking on your son?" The apartment owner spoke down the hallway from me.
"Yup, think he might be sleeping though sadly" I replied with a dejected look, fulling knowing he would probably get the key and help me out. He's been perving all over me ever since I got my son this place, but I dont think hes a bad guy,
"Ahh, lemme go get the key real quick then, I'm sure no boy would want to miss a visit from his beautiful mother" he said straight faced, which almost made me laugh, luckily I contained it.
After a few short moments and a few more compliments my son's apartment was opened up. Walking to his bedroom, I felt pure fear shiver down my spine, coldness like the furthest reaches of north crept up me. A large green woman was looking down at my son laying on the floor.
"What the fuck!?" I screamed
Stolen novel; please report.
"What's wrong Miss-"
"Is that your son laying on the floor!"
The apartment manager rushed over to Ryu, but I was frozen, the green thing was looking straight at me, burning into my soul, could the manager not see it? I blinked and before I knew it the green thing was right in front of me. Its lips moved slowly, with sweetness mixed with threat it spoke "Redemption" and disappeared before my eyes.
"Ryu! RYU!" I screamed while running to my son.. his eyes.. were completely white.. his pulse.. was gone. I guess I did fail as a parent..
I’m eating ice cream as I sat in front of my television set of my own lonely apartment. Trying, trying desperately to not think about my son. The police came, investigated him, took the body to figure out what happened. I still haven’t heard back from them.
Seeing the bright flashes of the tv screen flicker to something new caught my attention.
“The biggest update to a single video game ever some call it? Surely you jest!” A woman spoke to a man behind a news like table.
“I do not! Because not only has the content expanded beyond levels you and I could ever probably finish, but there's a new way to experience it too” The man said with a small smile creeping on his face.
“Monny has just announced a device that can fully bring you into the world of “The New Era” using all the senses available to us. Sight, taste, smell, sound, feel. You can lay in this device, transport into a world completely different to our own, and live in it. You wanna know the best thing Marry!?”
Both were extremely excited at this point, hopping up and down “What Joe! Tell us! We all want to hear!”
“Time is 24 times slower than here.. You can gain 24 days out of one with your life. The science behind it is astronomical, but the game develops and CEO of Monny promise health and safety. Imagine just popping in there to maybe, just study for an exam for christ sake! Humans have just developed a way to get more hours in a day, this is truly a marvelous day, one that shall be remembered forever. I gotta tell you Marry, I tried it first hand and it.. Blew my mind. It’s as real as the conversation we are having right now”
Maybe that’s what I need now.. Maybe I need to escape. I fear for myself if I don’t.
