Chapter 3 - Trial by Elevation

Calvin – Individual subspace pocket

Collecting his thoughts Calvin did a quick assessment of his surroundings, it was white and…well…white whilst being…white. Which didn’t really make much sense as he had never touched anything stronger than a sly drunken joint and especially not at work.

As much coffee as he drank, for all intents and purposes he was still reasonably fit and healthy so he shouldn’t be dead. This however, only left more questions than answers at his current predicament.

Being a perennial pragmatist he settled on a non-confrontational solution and he attempted to converse with the disembodied voice.

“So, um hello?”

To which the disembodied voice apparently answered:

“Your planet’s population of sentient beings has reached the threshold of 10,000,000,000 individual specimens and all, like you, are currently undergoing elevation.”

This was not the response he was expecting so he continued to attempt to get a more direct response.

“So uh, that’s a good thing right?”

The monotonic voice continued:

“You and your fellow sapient’s will have to adapt your psychology and physiology to be compatible with your new mana enhanced environs. Naturally this will entail you undergoing a brief and limited exposure to the afore mentioned ‘mana’.“

He was beginning to have pit of frustration form in his chest, it was going to be like talking to his grandpa lee wasn’t it? Where you just got told things until the conversation was over… Calvin began to wonder if this was one of those new search AI assistants that was going ‘senile’ just like his gandpa…

The senile Ai furthered:

“I shall now commence low grade mana exposure which may cause some discomfort, please stand by.”

This thing kept talking about mana like it was real. Did it mean mana like from fantasy games or something?

Further cementing Calvin’s senility hypothesis with its previous statement, he reached into his pocket to retrieve his phone to record this whackjob AI, to at least have some proof of his current predicament. Only he never got the chance as he began experiencing a sharp burning sensation behind his solar plexus.

The pain didn’t stop there and continued to spread out from its initial instance to the extremities of his hands, feet and worst of all his head. It was like someone had shoved a spike into his brain, only it was on fire and no matter how much he grabbed and clawed at his scalp it persisted. Screaming certainly did not seem to help either but none the less he did.

Calvin was unsure how long the pain continued, however he was slightly less unsure of how he found his way to white smooth ground. Becoming more and more aware of his surroundings again he god the distinct sensation that he was lying on it in a puddle of what smelled like vomit.

On further inspection, it in fact was his own vomitus as he found some of what he assumed to be the remains of this morning’s toast stuck to his chin, though clearly not in the same condition as it had entered his body earlier.

Groaning from pain with a rough and raw throat, while Calvin’s cramped and sore muscles protested at his commands to move. He made some floundering attempts to right himself, and asked the world at large the only question that seemed to make sense at the time.

“WHAT IN THE EVERLOVING SHIT WAS THAT?!?!”

The voice continued on:

“You are to be congratulated ‘Human’ for having survived the low grade mana exposure test.”

Face scrunched in incredulity he shot back. “You did that to me…on…. PURPOSE!?!”

Wiping his chin with his sleeve in absentminded disbelief, he was still trying to think of what to say next due to his mind still being quite befuddled when the voice informed him of something else:

“I am now about to begin the class aptitude test, this test will take into account your life’s previous experience, natural predispositions and bodies compatibility.”

A bluish hued cloud of gas suddenly appeared around his feet, causing him to release a shrill.

“Wait! Please just…please just stop for a second!”

Calvin continued to beg and plead to the disembodied voice as the cloud made it’s way up his body only for him to realize that he was not in any actual pain. With the cloud finally finishing up at his head he heard a *Whaaaaaap* coupled with another bright flash of light, but thankfully although he was blinking rapidly to recover his vision, he was absent any new painful sensations.

The monotonic voice specified:

“After reviewing the test results I have complied a list of available class choices, they are as follows”

Once again Calvin was caught by surprise, flinching back from the newly materialized blue screen in front of his face. Yet no matter how much he tried to swipe it away or shift it out of his vision by moving his head, body or both at the same time, it remained unaffected.

Seeing this new development was here to stay he resignedly focused on it and finally got around to actually inspecting its substance:

Classes available for selection:

>Apprentice woodsman (Common)

>Apprentice Knight (Common)

>Apprentice Man at Arms (Common)

>Apprentice Diplomat (Common)

>Apprentice Mage (Common)

>Apprentice Shaman (Uncommon)

…Selection time remaining 05 seconds…

Calvin’s eyes went wide in shock and comprehension as he realized he was running out of time. Having wasted it on what looked like to the outside observer, trying to invent a new scatological dance, he felt his face flush in embarrassed annoyance. Quashing his emotions, he attempted to make a choice but as the final seconds of the timer petered out, he watched on in horror as his paralyzed mind failed to make a decision and the screen winked out of existence.

The voice continued:

“Subject has failed to make a choice in the allotted time frame. Having failed to do so, the subject’s class will now be chosen at random.”

“Oh common man what the hell!?!” he demanded in protest.

Once again Calvin felt like he was floundering at the bottom of an ever deepening well with no way out. Another blue screen came into being just like the last except this time its contents were only two lines of text:

Class chosen at random >Apprentice Knight<

The monotonic AI furthered:

“Congratulations human 4,809,203,941 on your new class. Given that your initial integration of mana and class has been successful, you now have access to your ‘status’ interface giving a truncated and itemized visualization of your current state. To monitor this visualization simply mental invoke the word ‘status’. To modify and distribute attributes and skill activation, you must mentally command the appropriate attribute or skill to be modified by invoking ‘increase attribute’ or ‘skill name’. Whilst accessing the status interface all selections and modifications are final so please choose wisely.”

His mood shifted as he read and reread the notification, barely registering the monotonic voices spiel.

“Well fuck me sideways I’m a Knight!”

All his life he had been told by his immediate family and closest relatives what to be and how live, why would this be any different? He was also beginning to get the feeling that although there was a possibility this might be a hallucination, there was too much of a difference to his lived experience and what was being played out right now for his mind to have made all this up.

’Surely that pain would have woken me if this was a dream, and the spew? waaaay too real…and since when did I dream of being a knight? Also the level of detail…now lets have a look a-’

Just as his internal monologue was helping him make sense of recent events and start to try and take control of the proverbial rudder the voice stymied him again:

“Having completed your initial aptitude test, mana exposure and class selection successfully I shall now disseminate basic information on your soon to be new home and habitat as well as the system that is now part of it.”

At this point Calvin was resigned and momentarily numb to his new weird fate being doled out by this malfunctioning AI. Having had his mental initiative curtailed multiple times he decided to bide his time and listen till a better avenue of recourse presented itself:

“The world as you once knew it is no more, what domiciles, structures and facilities that previously existed have been reconstituted and relocated to better facilitate this planets elevation process. The biomes that used to exist haphazardly have been consolidated and reorganized in a more uniform manner.”

“In light of this your species has been provided with new basic accommodations known as ‘Outposts’ in level appropriate zones, along with access to a goods trading system known as a ‘Shop’. Currency to trade for items in the ‘Shop’ will be attainable from vanquishing mana enhanced entities in the form of condensed mana known as Manamotes. Manamotes come in different densities with according value ascribed to them and being universally attainable throughout the elevated cosmos are universally accepted currency on any world.”

“Having just been introduced to the system your species plus the native flora and fauna of your biomes will have to undergo drastic changes alongside your planet to be able to survive in this newly mana enhanced environment. Any previous technology relying on electrons vigorous interactions will no longer function without the interaction of mana, this is by way of mana having altered your previously lived in environment at both the atomic and sub-atomic level.”

“To further advance yourself as an individual you are able to absorb mana from entities your own mana field has interacted with at the period of time before the entity ceases to be. The more you are responsible for hastening said entities demise the greater portion of its mana you will be able to assimilate into your own mana field, conversely should another entity be responsible in a similar fashion for your demise the reverse effect shall be applied.”

‘Does that make me an energy vampire now?’ he thought.

Indifferent to his musing, the voice continued:

“The process of gaining mana with this mechanism is called “gaining experience” and will quantified in your ‘status’, only when a sufficient amount has been gathered and your level is increased.”

“Another Method of gaining experience is through the quest system, there are two means by which to obtain and complete quests.”

“The first method is by being present in a specific geographical location and participating in a locally broadcasted system activity ranging from, but not limited to exterminating other entities, destroying a specific structure or securing an area for a set amount of time.”

“The second method is by obtaining a quest from an ‘outpost’s’ quest bulletin board, these quests are refreshed every 24 of your hours and you are limited to taking only one per 24 hour period.”

“Rewards for the quests can also differ greatly aside from a rewarded set amount of individual experience you may also obtain a cache of mana motes, enchanted items of varying rarity, consumables and much more.”

“All beings in a mana enriched environment are subject to the ‘experience’ system and are treated equitably and fairly regardless of beings existing belief’s or values.”

‘That settles it!’ he thought ‘The only time something claims to be fair or equitable is when it totally isn’t, same crap I was fed about the private and public school systems or the Democratic Republic of Congo…’

Unperturbed by his silent suspicions, the monotonic voice carried on:

“While being an individualized instance of the Arbiter of the elevation tutorial protocol for your species’ personal subspace pockets my knowledge is limited to only what is applicable to my task. I must apologize if afore mentioned information on your current and upcoming circumstance is insufficient for you or has caused any distress, please take 5 minutes to familiarize yourself with your new class and ‘status’ interface.”

Just like that another blue box appeared in the right hand corner of his vision:

4 Minutes 59 seconds until elevation tutorial ends, you have also been provided with class specific equipment, please prepare yourself.

Now that Calvin was no longer mentally waylaid by lecture mode rouge AI, he noticed a white circular Pedestal where there was none before.

On the Pedestal there was an average looking wooden buckler strapped with metal bands and a plain looking iron short sword.

Grudgingly following the blue box’s directive, without wasting the remaining time, he trudged his sore muscles to inspect the items. When he got within about 2 feet of the items and focused on the sword another blue box that contained the text:

Squires Short sword

Level Requirement: 1

Attributes: Melee Damage + 1 – 5

Durability: 10 / 10

Description: A squire’s short sword and one of their most reliable tools. A common magical item synthesized for phase 1 worlds.

His eyes went wide as an awesome but scary thought occurred ‘it’s like I’ve been transported to a MMO…’, focusing on the shield so as not to waste his precious remaining minutes the short sword’s box disappeared completely to be replaced by another:

Squires Wooden Shield

Level Requirement: 1

Attributes: Physical Defense + 3%, Block Value +10

Durability: 10 /10

Description: A squire’s wooden shield their other most reliable tool. A common magical item synthesized for phase 1 worlds.

Quickly scooping up the items in either hand, in case they disappear before he got to them, he internally griped ‘well thanks I guess, still… this in no way makes up for nearly killing me!’

Noticing the timer in the right hand corner of his vision was now at 3 minutes and 25 seconds and decreasing by the second, he quickly mental intoned ‘status’ then another blue screen took his undivided attention:

Taking in the screen in front of him, it was most definitely RPG like and it looked as though he was starting from the bottom rung, if his stats and only available skill were anything to go by.

Chiding himself internally ‘this was more than I had then when I woke up so why am I so pissed?’

Quieting his internal moaning again, he noticed that time had passed quicker then he realized as he only had 22 seconds on the timer. Abandoning his previous approach of becoming a silent knowledge sponge, he tried one last time to question what he was coming to realize might not be rogue AI.

“Hey um ‘Arbiter’ guy, what exactly happens when the timer runs out?”

But he was only met with silence as the timer ticked the final seconds away, it’s apparent indifference to his queries finally made Calvin begin to lose his cool.

“You know what you can GO FU-“

But unfortunately before his chastisement could be completed, he was engulfed in the now familiar but still uncomfortable flash of blue-ish white light and with his magical removal from the sub space pocket, it in turn, ceased to be.

Anapu – Individual Subspace Pocket

Blinking her eyes only to be met with a white void, Anapu began to rub them in an effort to see if that at least would change the world to the appropriate color. Still not seeing anything but white, she began to replay the events that led up to her current predicament with growing unease.

Whilst puzzling over the last sentence she heard before her vision recovered, Anapu grew more certain that she was no longer so glad to be ‘rescued’ from the frustrating conversation with her uncle. Confirming her growing belief about her current situation, the robotic voice spoke once more:

“Your planet’s population of sentient beings has reached the threshold of 10,000,000,000 individual specimens and all, like you, are currently undergoing elevation.”

“Um sure, whatever you say…” She replied, in an attempt to stall for time and placate her captor.

Indifferent to her supplication, it continued:

“You and your fellow sapient’s will have to adapt your psychology and physiology to be compatible with your new mana enhanced environs. Naturally this will entail you undergoing a brief and limited exposure to the afore mentioned ‘mana’.“

Panicking she responded. “W-wait a second! Why are your bringing up exposing? I don’t care how limited, I’m not interested ey!?!”

Unmoved, the monotonic voice added:

“I shall now commence low grade mana exposure which may cause some discomfort, please stand by.”

Before she could reply there was a burning heat that began right behind her solar plexus and started to spread to her extremities, before finally it reached her head. Her resulting scream of pain would have broken glass had any been present.

With nothing but her bare palms for her nails to dig into to assuage her physical suffering, blood began to drip from her self-inflicted wounds. Doubling over, she crumpled to the floor like a marionette with it’s strings cut.

Several minutes later her form began to stir, yet where Anapu’s once questioning and inquisitive eyes had once resided, only two completely black, reflective voids remained. This however was not the only change as blue almost black, raised veins had also suffused her once uniform caramel skin, which was now bleached sickly white. Where her once lustrous shoulder length chestnut hair had draped her scalp, now only white almost shimmering hair remained.

Her new form rose in a whip like fashion, arching its back to the floor and facing its changed visage to the ceiling it let out and inhuman “rrrRRRROOOOOOOAAAARGHHHhhh”. Flexing it’s now elongated taloned hands and feet in preparation for an answer to its challenge.

After several moments of silence passed they were broken by the Arbiters voice:

“Mana Craven detected….terminating personal elevation and re-education session …please await cessation and relocation”

The thing where Anapu had been, screamed again as her once contralto voice now carried the spine tingling undertone of nails on a chalkboard.

The Mana Craven swiveled its head with predatory intent, searching for the source of the voice in the blank void. But finding no prey to target it, flexed and unflexed its claws in irritation. The sounds from the action was something akin to that of knives on sharpening steels where they made contact with themselves.

The Mana Craven continued in this fashion until it was transported out of the subspace pocket. Which now devoid of its sole occupant, ceased to exist.

Un-Bep’ee – Individual Subspace Pocket

Un-Bep’ee’s first day of medical school was not turning out how imagined it. Not even remotely.

After waiting for his vision to clear up and noticing the abundance of white in the foreground, background and well…everywhere that was visible to him. He began reciting his Uma’s favorite song she would always sing to him whenever he was sick as a means to calm his troubled mind.

Subverting his recitations he once more heard the monotonic robotic voice that had spoken to him only once before:

“Your planet’s population of sentient beings has reached the threshold of 10,000,000,000 individual specimens and all, like you, are currently undergoing elevation.”

In response to the pronouncement Un-Bep’ee’s eyes widened, uncaring of his amazement the voice continued:

“You and your fellow sapient’s will have to adapt your psychology and physiology to be compatible with your new mana enhanced environs. Naturally this will entail you undergoing a brief and limited exposure to the afore mentioned ‘mana’.“

Still not sure what to do with this information or what it meant for that matter he persisted in standing in stunned silence

Indifferently the voice carried on:

“I shall now commence low grade mana exposure which may cause some discomfort, please stand by.”

Un-bep’ee’s brows furrowed at this last statement, because he certainly didn’t see or feel anything different, at least that is, until the pain began. It began behind his solar plexus with a hot intensity that made him cry out in alarm and as the sensation began to spread out to his extremities he crumpled in on himself. Tears flowing from his eyes as the excruciating sensation arrived at his head, his unprepared brain was overloaded and immediately caused him to blackout and collapse.

When he came to an indeterminate time later, he was on the floor in a cold sweat and with muscles that ached with a fierce intensity that he would have previously thought impossible. Attempting to move, his body and mind protested at his feeble effort to bring it into an upright sitting position.

After what seemed like several minutes of slowly stretching his pain plagued body the disembodied voice of his torturer spoke once more:

“You are to be congratulated ‘Human’ for having survived the low grade mana exposure test.”

Perplexed he asked. “Was this ‘mana’ supposed to hurt me so? Surely this is not correct?”

Failing in his attempt to bring polite attention to his suffering, the robot voice continued unconcernedly:

“I am now about to begin the class aptitude test, this test will take into account your life’s previous experience, natural predispositions and bodies compatibility.”

A blue-ish cloud of what looked like gas appeared around his feet and began to rise up his body and in concert so did Un-Bep’ee’s panicked voice.

“Please good sir! If you could stop this unpleasantness I would be most grateful!”

In opposition to Un-Bep’ee’s fervent wishes, the light continued to rise to his head where it began to settle. Not two short breath’s later he heard a *Whaaaaaap* coupled with another bright flash of light yet to his pleasant surprise he didn’t feel any pain.

The voice of his torturer added:

“After reviewing the test results I have complied a list of available class choices, they are as follows.”

He was startled for what seemed the umpteenth time today when a blue screen materialized into the center of his vision. Steadying his breathing he calmed himself and soaked in the information it contained:

Classes available for selection:

>Apprentice Spearman (Common)

>Apprentice Shaman (Uncommon)

>Apprentice Woodsman (Common)

>Apprentice Mage (Common)

>Apprentice Cleric (Common)

>Apprentice Pathfinder (Uncommon)

…Selection time remaining 2 Minutes 25 Seconds…

Un-Bep’ee’s eyebrows ascended his forehead as he digested the text of the window, he wasn’t sure what half the words meant let alone if the choice was important enough. Still sorting through his options the timer had gone down to 1 minute and 32 seconds.

Frantically his mind lacking any further information but the displayed names and his own knowledge whittled it down to either Apprentice Archivist or Apprentice Cleric as either one seemed like a good fit for his personality.

Further musings on his possible choice was cut short when he noticed the timer currently at 41 Seconds and decreasing fast. Steeling his resolve he went with Apprentice Cleric as to his mind it was basically the thing he had spent his whole life working towards anyway.

No sooner had he mentally confirmed his choice the screen containing the list of classes disappeared only to be replaced by another screen containing a single line of text:

Class chosen: >Apprentice Cleric<

Monotonically, the voice furthered:

“Congratulations human 3,609,225,962 on your new class. Whilst accessing the status interface all selections and modifications are nonrefundable and final so please choose wisely.”

For some strange reason Un-Bep’ee’s mind felt a sense of calm relief at the notification, it was almost like what he remembered being accepted university felt like. Reeling for a few moments in the eerie sense of accomplishment the robotic voice spoke again:

“Having completed your initial aptitude test, mana exposure and class selection successfully I shall now disseminate basic information on your soon to be new home and habitat and the system that is now part of it”

Feeling even more proud of himself for reasons he did not quite understand himself he let the words wash over him:

“The world as you once knew it is no more, what domiciles, structures and facilities that previously existed have been reconstituted and relocated to better facilitate this planets elevation process. The biomes that used to exist haphazardly have been consolidated and reorganized in a more uniform manner.”

“In light of this your species has been provided with new basic accommodations known as ‘Outposts’ in level appropriate zones along with access to a goods trading system known as a ‘Shop’.

Pulling himself out of his internal self-congratulation he latched onto the unfamiliar term he had heard for the second time, ‘This ma-na might be important but by my ancestors I wish I knew what it was…’

The voice continued:

“Having just been introduced to the system your species plus the native flora and fauna of your biomes will have to undergo drastic changes alongside your planet to be able to survive in this newly mana enhanced environment. Any previous technology relying on electrons vigorous interactions will no longer function without the interaction of mana, this is by way of mana having altered your previously lived in environment at both the atomic and sub-atomic level.”

“To further advance yourself as an individual you are able to absorb mana from entities your own mana field has interacted with at the period of time before the entity ceases to be. The more you are responsible for hastening said entities demise the greater portion of it’s mana you will be able to assimilate into your own mana field conversely should another entity be responsible in a similar fashion for your demise the reverse effect shall be applied.”

He wasn’t sure what this meant exactly but was hoping it would be like hunting with his grandfather or better yet one of those ‘computa gamez’ his cousins had told him of and not some form of forced criminal activity.

The voice continued:

“The process of gaining mana with this mechanism is called “gaining experience” and will quantified in your ‘status’, only when a sufficient amount has been gathered and your level is increased.”

“Another Method of gaining experience is through the quest system, there are two means by which to obtain and complete quests.”

“The first method is by being present in a specific geographical location and participating in a locally broadcasted system activity ranging from but not limited to exterminating other entities, destroying a specific structure or securing an area for a set amount of time.”

Having lived a rural and isolated existence most of his life he was strangely ready to accept what he was being told as fact thinking; ‘My gosh, the world really is a strange and amazing place if this is what we can make possible’.

The voice added:

“While being an individualized instance of the Arbiter of the elevation tutorial protocol for your species’ personal subspace pockets my knowledge is limited to only what is applicable to my task. I must apologize if afore mentioned information on your current and upcoming circumstance is insufficient for you or has caused any distress, please take 5 of your minutes to familiarize yourself with your new class and ‘status’ interface.”

With the Arbiters continued stream of information ceasing, another blue box appeared in the right hand corner of his vision:

4 Minutes 59 Seconds until elevation tutorial ends, you have also been provided with class specific equipment please prepare yourself.

Ready to hit the ground running he noticed that now co inhabiting this white void with him was a pedestal of the same color upon which rested a 2 ½ foot rod of metal replete with leather bound handle on one end and a ball with small spike protrusions at the other. Prioritizing the physical object before following the voices other instructions he made his way over to the object.

He made his way warily over to the pedestal and when he was within 2 to 3 feet of the object another blue box popped into the center of his vision:

Apprentice Clerics Mace

Level Requirement: 1

Attributes: Melee Damage + 1 – 3, Magic Power + 1 - 5

Durability: 10 / 10

Description: An Apprentice Clerics most useful item. A common magical item synthesized for phase 1 worlds.

Hesitantly gripping the mace in his hand, he felt an eerie affinity to it as if somehow it was a part of him, strengthening his very being. Noticing the timer in the bottom right hand of his vision reading 3 minutes and 43 seconds he filed away the new sensation for review at a less pressing time. He quickly mentally intoned ‘status’ and the maces information screen was supplanted with a new screen apparently containing his very own statistical information:

Once again Un-bep’ee felt like a fish out of water with all these unfamiliar terms being literally thrust in his face and he would be most displeased, if not for the fact that, if he was interpreting this new blue screen correctly, it would mean that he now could heal people with magic!

Mind abuzz with all the possibilities and potential of this new ability of his would have to help others, his day dreams began to get the better of him.

Before he knew it the timer in the right hand corner of his vision reached zero. And once again he was engulfed in the now familiar but still uncomfortable flash of blue-ish white light and with his ceasing to exist in the sub space pocket, it also vanished.
