Chapter 5: A New Life, A Dark Past
“Was this really a good idea?”
I looked over at Lily who was staring at the stars. It was already night when we finished meeting with the queen. Currently we were walking towards the outskirts of the city since we were given a plot of land that we could use to build a house and live in.
The night sky was beautiful. It was filled with colors of red blue and yellow that I had to blink twice to make sure it was real. The crazy part was I could the moon and not just one but two. One had a yellowish color while the other had a bluish color.
“Well, this is better than staying in the castle. You noticed didn’t you?”
“Yeah… the other nobles sure looked like they hate us.”
We kept silent as we continued walking to the outer district. As for me, the scenes from earlier were still fresh in my mind.

(Earlier)
I took a sip of my tea as I looked at the dumbfounded the queen. She seems to be having a hard time thinking about our response.
“Can you please explain your refusal?”
I looked over at Marlana who seemed to be clenching her knuckles.
“Well, to put it simply. I really don’t want to get involved in this kingdoms politics.”
“But as a hero…”
“As a hero, I am immediately included in politics. Don’t think you can fool me Marlana. I heard Artura clearly when she explained how she wanted to bring us away from the politics of this kingdom.”
I could see her biting her lower lip as she realized that I couldn’t be fooled.
“But, we even placed ourselves beneath you? Don’t you think you should at least help us since you made that secret contract or whatever it was on us?”
I looked at Artura who was now glaring at us.
“That and this are different. That contract was to keep you quiet about my true identity. This on the other hand pertains to the heroes and their mission and frankly, I’m not having that.”
I then released some of my bloodlust as I gave them the most bloodcurdling stare I could give.
“Listen, I’ve been fighting since the day I was born. Fires, blood, metals. Those were most of the things I’ve experienced my past life. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve managed to find small paces of peace and enjoyment but my creators’ selfdom gave it to their creations.”
I walked up to Artura and forced her to stare into my eyes. I could see fear in her pupils… but there I can also see understanding and hope. I could also feel a slight spike in mana. Really, this girl… I sighed. I released my bloodlust and sat back down on my chair.
“Really Artura, all I want is peace. I can help you, but can you at least give me the peace I’ve yearned for my entire life.”
“…”
She stared at the floor, silent like a corpse.
*Slap*
Out of nowhere she slapped herself which really surprised me. She then looked up and I could see renewed energy inside her.
“Alright, I understand now.”
She crumpled up the paper from before and began writing on a new sheet of paper. As she wrote, a smooth golden light followed the tip of her pen. In seconds, she finished and presented me the new contract.
I Artura Wessex grant Bryan Carleton the resources he needs to help this kingdom defend itself against the Demon Lord.
He shall be given a position as an instructor to teach soldiers combat abilities.
He will also be given a small squad to lead, though it is up to him to decide the actions of this group.
He will also be the sub commander of the Legionnaires Crux Militia and will be entrusted the defenses of the city.

I smiled. I can’t believe she understood me. But then again, that magic was pretty cheap.
“Che… you sure got me. What type of spell was that?”
She gave me a playful wink.
“I can’t just reveal all my tricks now can I. Especially from a cheat like character like you.”
I laughed. Lily was giving a look that said ‘not bad’ while Marlana just looked at the three of us confused. I took the pen and signed my name. Without warning, it began burning and to my surprise it didn’t turn into ashes. Instead another paper appeared.
“Thank you Bryan, and sorry. I didn’t expect your past to be… dark.”
“That’s why I like keeping quiet. But I guess it feels good to let people into their lives right.”
She smiled. She then picked up a key from one of her cabinets and gave it to me.
“This is a plot of land at the outskirt of the kingdom. It’s a very isolated location so no one would be able to see you. Of course with your type of magic, you should be able to build something suitable to both of your needs.”
I grabbed the key as I continued to gaze at her in amazement.
“Really, you better not tell anyone about my abilities. Remember the contract.”
She shrugged as if she didn’t give a care in the world.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
“Hey, if I was going to say it, the contract would have activated right.”
“Right…”
I looked towards Lily. She understood my intentions and instantly dropped the barrier from the room.
*Thud!*
“MY LADY!!”
Two knights broke down the door. They all held spears right on us as more guards flooded into the room.
“Are you ok my Lady?”
“STAND DOWN. WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?”
They lowered their arms confused at why they were being shouted at. A big knight then waded through the group.
“Well, after you entered the room, our magicians detected a spike in mana directed in this room. Of course we instantly mobilized and barged right in to save you Madame.”
Artura gave them a confused stare.
“Wait, how long did this take you?”
“What do you mean my lady?”
“How long did it take you to mobilize?”
“Five minutes at most, my queen.”
Something seemed to dawn towards Artura but then she remembered about Lily. She sighed as she sat down.
“Everything is ok, rather I want you guys to get back to your positions.”
They all shifted as they stared at us.
“What about them my lady?”
“Leave them. They are very important benefactors to the kingdom. Actually, He will be training the militia now and will take over the defenses of this city so please treat him with respect.”
They all looked at me with confusion. I flashed them a smile and formed a peace sign with my hand.
“QUEEN ARTURA!!”
A noble suddenly came in. He was kind of fat for his size and he had a very beautiful mustache. His dress clothes were filled with medallions and sashes of many kinds. Must be rewards.
“Why are you giving them such important positions? They don’t even look like they’re capable of fighting anyone aside from thieves and low leveled soldiers like before.”
Artura glared at the man.
“I would watch your tongue commander. You really have no idea what they’re capable of.”
“But Madame. You haven’t even talked to them for that long. How is it that now you…”
“Our time spent here was actually longer than you think it was. I will not tell you the full details, but these two will be important to our cause. That’s why I ask you to back down right now, Commander Rizel!”
Rizel looked at us, anger and jealousy across his face. He then did an about turn and left the room.
“As for you two. Go. You need time to get everything ready.”
I bowed as well as Lily. We both exited the room and came into full view of the throne room. The nobles eyes were all focused on us and not one of their vibes were good. It only took a few seconds and the commander must have tipped them off in our easy ascension to power. I sighed. This is going to be a long road.
“Come on Lily, let’s go.”
She grabbed my arm as we quickly waded through the nobles. From both sides I could hear gossips and rumors sprouting. I really don’t care about you guys but I do want to live a peaceful life. That’s why I’m going to do my best and live my life to the fullest in this world. With this in my mind, we exited the castle towards our new home.

(Artura POV)
“Artura, you ok?”
I looked at Marlana who was giving me a new cup of tea. I took a sip of it though I really didn’t have the appetite.
“His world… Bryans world… did he ever tell you anything about it?”
“Hmm… he did ask me a strange question that seemed to be about his world.”
I looked at her, my interest was piqued.
“What did he ask?”
“Hmmm… he asked me if I knew the phrase ‘the sun can only set if we are to believe it can,’ truly a weird question no?”
“Haha…ha… yeah. It is a strange question for us.”
Marlana looked at me once again, worry in her face. I must look horrible right now. Even I understand that I’m a sporadic person whose emotion can easily be seen. Right now… I know I’m a mess. Ugh I need some sleep.
“Well, that’s enough fun for one day. Good night Marlana. I expect many things to happen starting from now on.”
She bowed as she took her leave. I also made my way to my chambers. I looked outside and looked at the two moons and brightly colored stars that littered the sky.
“A world filled with darkness… a world that has never seen the sun…”
I felt my heart race as I remembered the visions I saw. That world was nothing compared to this world nor the previous heroes world. That world, Bryan’s world, can only be described as the devils den.
“I’m really happy that I saved you Bryan…”
