chapter 19

Sang, Rose, and a downcast Joyce left the inn, with a smirking Dante following closely behind. As they made their way out, Dante’s curiosity got the better of him, and he stopped to ask the creepy girl with pigtails, “What’s your name?” Her pale face and piercing eyes gave him chills as she replied, “Raven.” The name sent a shiver down Dante’s spine.

Stepping outside, they were greeted by the sight of a massive griffin. Perched on its back were two figures: one clad in armor with black hair, and the other in expensive-looking clothing with blond hair, lounging in a throne-like saddle. Before either of them could speak, Rose pointed accusingly and shouted, “Brother, I know you didn’t bring Maris to antagonize me or my fiancé, because if you did, I’m gonna have my Lance impale you in the ass!”

The blond man stood up, gracefully hopping off the griffin’s back. Raising his hands in a placating gesture, he said, “Rose, as your older brother, I must always protect you, even from yourself. Maris here is better suited for you than that degenerate you call a fiancé.”

Rose’s expression turned to one of utter disbelief, as if someone had just held a headless chicken to her face and it was still alive. The armored boy, Maris, climbed down from the griffin using a ladder. He walked up beside Rose’s brother, bowed on one knee, and declared, “Milord Dandy is right, Mistress Rose. Thine Maris of the House of Lot would suit thee best.” He then turned his gaze to Sang, pulling a white glove from seemingly nowhere and throwing it at Sang’s feet. “Thine challenge thee to a battle in honor of thy mistress’s hand in marriage.”

Sang shook his head in exasperation and gestured for everyone to follow him. “You can have her, I don’t care one bit. But if you keep standing in my way, I’ll blow your head off your shoulders, regardless of whether you’re covered in antibrascar alloy.”

Rose looked like someone had just tried to strangle her dog as she screamed, “I’m telling your father you still refuse to claim me as your bride!”
