The birth of Orion
After 10 years of research into Virtual Technology a company called Virco finally succeeded in creating the technology that would be fully immersive. By connecting to your brain waves it seemed that you were transported into a digital world. After a few months another company called Orca successfully created an AI that could learn and evolve.
The two companies joined and together they were called ViOr. They soon released a VMMORPG. Prior to the release there was no news about the game or what the two companies succeeded in making. The media only knew about the merger between the two companies.
The game released was called Tale of Adventure. It was a game that was everything a gamer dreamed of. It was fully immersive, the world was 99.99% realistic and just by entering a pod you would be able to live in that world. Tale of Adventure was a fantasy world just like many other regular MMORPG with similar rules.
Jake was a shy young man, 22 years old with a height of 180. He was a bit skinny but quite handsome. He knew many people but he wasn’t truly friends with any of them. He preferred to stay at home than go out to party. Jake liked games since he was young and when he heard of Tale of Adventure, he went online and tried to order one from their website. The only problem was that they only sold a few every week so it was pretty hard to get one.
After a few weeks of trying to get one he finally succeeded. He got one even though it was a bit expensive. Now all he had to do was wait for it to arrive at his house. While waiting for the device he started reading everything he could about the game. He was surprised to see how little was written about the game.
While reading a few things about the game, he found out there is a competition in the game. The rules weren’t clear and the conditions to win were nowhere to be found but the prize was 10% of the company so users didn’t really post any information about the game since they wanted to win. The only information he found was from the official website.
The time will pass 5 times faster in the game than in the real world. So what seemed like 5 hours in the game in the real world only one hour passed. Also after creating a character you will be a newborn in a random family in Tale of Adventure. You will grow faster than normal and everything earned is doubled during the growth period but you won’t be able to level up. This period lasts a week, in game time.
Jake was shocked when he read the next part. It seemed that you could only learn one crafting skill in the game. If you want to learn another crafting skill you will replace your old one and lose all your progress. He didn’t find anything else interesting on the official website apart from some minor useless details.
Then he turned to the forums. Users didn’t post much, but there were still some who put some random information. After a few hours of searching he found out that there is no attack magic. Magic ,it seems, is only for support and healing. Jake didn’t find anything else that he thought would be useful.
For the next week he waited for the tech to arrive. He told his parents about everything and they were okay with it as long as he kept his grades up. And since he just finished with his exams he had plenty of time to play all summer.
A week later there was a knock on the door. When the young man opened the door he saw two big men in suits. Behind them there was a lady in glasses and a white lab coat.
-“Are you Mr. Jake Rades?”
-“Yes. How may I help you?”
-“My name is Anna. We are here to deliver and install Tale of Adventure. Where should we install it?”
Jake was exited that his game arrived and smiled broadly. He led them to his room. The two men carried the huge box up the stairs into his room. The lady in glasses ordered the two men around to carefully take out the parts. After half an hour she put all the parts together and finished installing Tale of Adventure.
-“If you need anything else please do not hesitate to give us a call. Good luck in your new adventure.”
After saying that she and the two big guys left.Jake now looked at the big piece of metal and plastic in front of him. The pod was the size of a small bed and with a black colored glass covering it. Before entering the pod though he went ate and took a shower so that he can spend more time in the game.
He laid down into the pod. The glass door closed and Jake waited something to happen. He looked around to see if there was a button inside. There wasn’t one, only a small text in the corner. It said how to turn on and off.
“Adventure ON”
Suddenly he heard a female voice
-“Please hold still while your body is scanned”
A bright light appeared and covered his entire body. Then it faded away.
-“Please look at the blue circle in front of you.”
A small circle appeared on the glass
He looked at it. Suddenly a bright blinded him and he found himself in a white circular room. While looking around he heard the same voice as before.
-“You have been synchronized to the device. From now on when you enter and say Adventure ON you will be transported into the game without needing to repeat the previous process. Are you ready to begin your character creation?“
-“Yes. Thank you.”
Jake decided to be as polite as possible since the AI was smart and could ruin his experience.
A window appeared in front of him.
Please chose your avatar name
He considered a bit before saying
-“Orion”
Please chose your gender.
Male, female or neutral
‘What the hell is neutral….Ah, i don’t care’
-“Male”
Please chose your race.Human
Dwarf
Elf
“Show description for each race”
HumanThe most common race among the three. They have balanced stats.
This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
DwarfThey are master crafters. They are able to learn and master any craft faster. They have the most strength and defense but also the lowest mana and agility.
ElfThey are the best hunters. They have the most mana and agility but also the lowest strength and endurance.
‘Well dwarfs are out of the question…So then should I choose human since they have the most balanced stats? But then if there is no attack magic are elves just rogues and healers? That can’t be. There must be something hidden about them that I don’t know yet…should I risk it?’
-“…….Elf”
What do you want to look like?
An elf version that looked like him appeared in front of him. He looked exactly the same as him with the exception of his hair and ears. He had white hair and pointy ears.
-“Can you make the ears normal?”
-“Yes but you would be a half-elf and lose some of the bonus racial stats”
-“Never mind then. Can you change my eye color to light green?”
As soon as he finished the model in front of him had now green eyes similar to the color of jade. As he looked into the eyes of the model he felt that he was being sucked in. He broke eye contact and looked at the rest of the body.
“Could you increase the muscle mass by 10%?”
The model now had bigger muscles. Not big like balloons but just enough that if you looked carefully you could see them.
-“Could you make it so that my muscles remain the same even after gaining more strength?”
-“Let me check.”
Jake liked the amount of muscles he had now. He didn’t want to ruin this look that he had right now.
-“Your request has been accepted”
-“That’s it. I have no more changes to make.”
Please chose your starting location.
A large map appeared in front of him.
“Could you please highlight those that have the smallest player population and are closest to a forest”
The map broke into three pieces. Each showed a different place. There were three village looking places. One in the mountains, and since there was cold that was out. The other two villages were similar. Both were in the middle of the forest. One was in close to some mountains and the other was near a city. Jake decided to choose the first one, closest to the mountains.
-“Primvo, please”
-“Well then Orion…Good luck in you adventure.”
Before he could say anything he was blinded by a white light and the total darkness. He opened his eyes slowly and a huge woman and man were looking to him with tears in their eyes smiling. Orion remembered what he read and saw that he was just a baby now. The two watching him must be his parents.
They both had white hair. The man had short hair, brown eyes and was quite young looking. He was dressed in leather armor. He had some small defined muscles with wide shoulders. The woman was dressed in a yellow dress, with long hair. She had the same eye color as Orion. She wasn’t skinny but wasn’t fat either, she was a healthy woman. They were both looked like they came from a painting.
“The goddess appeared in my dream and told me that my child is one of the chosen ones. She alsto told me me his name. He shall be known as Orion.” The father told the mother who didn’t take her eyes off the baby. When Orion tried to stand up, he couldn’t. When he tried to speak only small sounds came out. But still it seems the system recognized what he wanted and the status window appeared in front of him.
Status WindowName:OrionAlignment:NeutralLevel:1Class:-Titles:NewbornFame:0-Health:1/1Mana:3/3Strength:1Agility:2Attack:0Defense:0Wisdom:1Intelligence:2
‘I really am just like a baby…weak.’
Orion got picked by the woman and carefully held. She started singing a lullaby. The baby soon fell asleep and a window appeared telling him to return in 5 hours real time.
