Chapter Twenty-One: Remembrance
----------------------------------------
I awoke to darkness. It was not the familiar ebony of the void, but it brought me a sense of calm anyway. Unfamiliar sensations caused me to open my mouth, unconsciously slurping up a viscous liquid. It tasted delicious, I decided. Feeling tired, another strange thing, I slipped back into the darkness of unconsciousness.
I awaken again, slurp more liquid, and fall into slumber. This repeated itself many times, each time I grew stronger and bigger, more capable of being awake longer. As I awoke yet again, I instinctively began to claw the surrounding layer, banging against it with all my might. Finally, the shell began to crack. Soon, light filtered through the small cracks. My strength began to fail, but I persevered. As I was on the last remnants of my strength, I broke through, crashing onto soft dirt.
I sat up, examining my surroundings suspiciously. I was in a cave, and I padded towards the entrance on wobbly legs. I looked out, examining my surroundings suspiciously. The cave was in a clearing, surrounded by trees and plants, many green and blue, but some different colors I had no name for. It mattered not, and I looked around with curiosity, excited about finally leaving the all-encompassing darkness.
Looking up, I see a bright blue sky, with small clouds drifting. Two suns shone down on me, one yellow and one, slightly smaller, blue. Blinking away the last of the dots in my vision, I examined myself. I had four big paws, sharp claws and fangs, and gray and silver fur. My beautiful fur was covered in a thin layer of yellow liquid, and I licked it, bringing back the pleasant taste.
After licking myself clean, I turned to the remnants of the shell I escaped from. It was midnight blue, and as I examined it, my stomach rumbled. Following my instincts, I ate the shell voraciously, crunching through the tough material easily. I yawned when I finished, feeling my sleepiness return.
That is when I notice something else. Eight other eggs surrounded mine, each a different color. The largest one was a blue reminiscent of water, a light aqua shade. The next was a rocky amethyst, followed by a fiery red. After those came a black egg that seemed to absorb light, an icy blue one, a dark green, a bright gold, and a light gray. I sniffed them curiously, examining each one closely before getting a drink from a nearby puddle.
As I looked at my reflection, I saw a silver-gray wolf pup with clumsy paws and small dragon horns on my brow. My midnight blue eyes glittered with flickering silver, and a wolfish smile graced my face. I was adorable. Shaking my head to clear my thoughts, I heard a scratching sound - my maybe siblings were hatching!
I sprinted as fast as my large paws would carry me, only to trip and land face-to-face with my new sibling. The black egg had cracked open, revealing a cute wolf pup with ebony fur and golden eyes. Her eyes widened at the sight of me, and my heart melted a bit. She was so cute! Almost as cute as me! Nothing could compete with my cuteness! (However, if there ever was a contender, it would be her.)
My new instincts kicked in, and I leapt on her, licking all over her face. She spluttered indignantly, her snout scrunching up. I gave a little bark and howled quietly, sitting up on my haunches. “Hi, hi, hi, hi, hi!” I said excitedly, happy to meet my sister. “My name is Aella!” I knew instinctively what my name was. My sister shuffled her paws. “I am Umbra.” She says quietly. “Yay!” I spin around in a circle excitedly. When I hear my sister’s stomach rumbling, I stop and turn to face her. “Sorry… I’m just so excited! You should probably eat something…”
We bonded quickly, as was only right for a wolf, with me playfully jumping around and Umbra eating her first meal. Exhaustion finally caught up with me, and I settled down in a cozy nest of grass and moss. Umbra snuggled up beside me, murmuring a quiet goodnight. As we drifted off to sleep, I whispered, "Night, sister..." and drifted into dreams.
----------------------------------------
*Crk* As I rubbed my eyes with a paw, the excitement of the moment hit me. My siblings were finally hatching! "Umbra, Umbra, wake up! They're hatching!" I whispered urgently, making my way over to the eggs with careful steps so as not to trip and accidentally harm any of the new sibs. "I wonder what their names will be," my sister murmured softly as she joined me by the eggs.
My attention was immediately captured as the biggest egg, the one that was a beautiful shade of blue, began to crack and break open. From within emerged a seemingly ordinary gray wolf, but there was something in her deep blue gaze that told me she was anything but ordinary. I eagerly greeted her, welcoming her to our small family. After introductions were made, the newest addition, Tempest, wasted no time in digging into her meal.
Three more eggs hatched simultaneously - a gold one, a gray one, and an ice blue one. The newborn pups first greeted each other before turning their attention to us. "I am Lumos," declared the golden pup with white fur and golden markings, his molten gold eyes shining brightly. Next was Glacier, a female with white and blue fur and ice spikes adorning her back, her demeanor as sweet as her appearance was cold. Finally, Sylph introduced herself with enthusiasm, her white, black, gray, and purple coat and wings fluttering behind her as she glided around the cave in excitement, her tiger-like stripes drawing the eye.
The last trio of eggs cracked open one at a time to reveal Aspen, a pup with a long feathered tail and antlers, Ignis, a male with brown fur and fiery red markings, and Serenity, a colorful mix of browns, dark and light markings, with a row of amethyst down her back. Each one brought their own unique energy and personality to our growing family, filling the cave with life and joy.
After a whirlwind of playing, eating, and mischief-making, we all settled down to sleep, the cave filled with the warm glow.
----------------------------------------
I leapt onto a rock, looking down at the others. “Everyone, I think we should hunt!” I announce, the pups gathered below murmuring. “I was thinking that we could hunt in groups of three, that way it would be even. Then, we can bring our prey back to the den; carefully, of course. We don’t want anything to follow us back to the cave. Everyone got it?” After an assortment of agreements, we split up.

Ten Minutes Later…
----------------------------------------
With a flick of my ears, I broke into a loping run, chasing the deer towards a tree. Wait for it, wait for it, NOW! At my signal, Serenity ran away from where she had been distracting the buck while we chased down a fat female. At the same time, Umbra jumped out of the tree to land on its back, tearing into its hind. Increasing my speed again, I hung onto the deer’s neck, and at the same time, Serenity crashed into it, knocking it over. I teared into its throat easily. Sitting up on my haunches, I panted heavily. That is when it appeared.

I felt my form shifting, growing. We stared at the screen in front of us, stared at each other, then stared at the screen again. “Huh?” We stated in unison. Before we got too confused, I grabbed the deer’s neck in my now larger mouth. “Come on. We need to bring the deer back to camp.” Serenity helped me, and Umbra scouted around us. When we arrived at the camp, I realized everyone had grown! Leaping onto a large rock, I spoke. “Has everyone seen a blue screen?” After enthusiastic agreement, we learned that almost everyone had the same stuff. Each of us had our own element. Mine was storm, Umbra’s was shadow, and Serenity’s was earth, for example. We decide to ignore it, and after a hearty meal, we fall asleep.

Fifteen Days Later…
----------------------------------------
I could hardly contain my excitement as I led my team of beast slavers into the depths of the Primordial Forest. The thrill of capturing rare and powerful beasts fueled my every step, and the thought of the riches that awaited me upon their sale made my heart race with anticipation.
The forest was teeming with life, and we moved swiftly and stealthily through the trees, our eyes scanning for any signs of our quarry. Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the trees, and I knew we were close.
As we approached a clearing, we saw a group of beast pups playing together, oblivious to the danger that lurked nearby. With a signal to my team, we sprang into action, encircling the pups and trapping them in a makeshift net.
One by one, we wrestled the struggling pups into cages, their cries echoing through the forest. I felt a pang of guilt at the sight of their fear and confusion, but I quickly pushed it aside. These creatures were mere commodities to me, a means to an end.
As we continued our hunt, my heart skipped a beat as I stumbled upon a hidden cave, its entrance obscured by dense foliage. Curiosity piqued, I motioned for my team to follow me as we cautiously entered the darkened cavern.
What we found inside took my breath away. A pile of nine wolf pups, each one more magnificent than the last, curled together in a peaceful slumber. Their fur shimmered with the elements they represented - ice, wind, water, fire, earth, shadow, storm, wyld, and light. It was a sight unlike anything I had ever seen before, and I felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of capturing such rare and powerful beasts.
I wasted no time in ordering my team to secure the pups, their cages already prepared for transport. As they stirred awake, their eyes filled with confusion and fear, I ignored their pleas and focused solely on the promise of profit that awaited me.
With the pups safely secured, we made our way back to camp, the sound of their cries fading into the distance. As we prepared to leave the forest, my heart swelled with anticipation at the thought of the riches that awaited me. I felt no guilt for the creatures we had captured, only a burning desire for wealth and power.
I knew that my reputation as a top beast trader would only grow stronger with the addition of these powerful pups to my collection. And with that thought in mind, I left the Primordial Forest.
----------------------------------------
We slammed the Collar of Sealing onto the shadow Fenrir pup, its eyes still closed. Then it was onto the last one. Unease stirred in me as I looked at the storm pup. It had miniature twisting horns sprouting out of its skull, and a row of small spikes down its back. Its long tail was wrapped around it as it slept peacefully, reminiscent of a lizard or wyvern, but covered in thick gray fur.
Opening the cage, Bruno grabbed the Fenrir roughly, stabbing a syringe of tranquilizer into its shoulder. Its silver-blue eyes shot open, staring straight at me. Fear thudded in my heart, and I slammed the collar onto its neck. This one was special, designed to make most creatures forget it was there and keep it from attacking humans. But the creature did not care. It clawed Bruno, swiping its claws along his face. He screamed loudly, as ice began to spread from the scratch marks.
The Fenrir leaped off him, racing back towards the forest. Soon, it disappeared, as Bruno died a cold and painful death.

Keep running… Must keep running… Why must I keep running? I collapse in a small clearing in the soft dirt, exhausted, and sleep.
