Chapter 30: Class Selection (3)

Chapter 30: Class Selection (3)

“Days left in the tutorial, 95.”

Jun muttered under his breath as he watched the number tick down.

“Analyzing…”

The system’s voice continued to echo throughout the room, just as it had been doing for the last few hours.

“I’ve already wasted too much time. I’m not falling for this again, I’m done.”

Jun got up and inspected the intricate lines along the floor.

He was currently standing in the middle of a pulsing blue circle, which was located at the direct center of the enormous room. In the distance, many erratic lines pulsed in different patterns along with the blue circle.

“Analyzing…”

Jun began walking towards the exit.

I’ll come back later when I get more information.

He reasoned with himself internally, but he couldn’t help feeling sour for wasting so much time.

However, the moment he stepped foot outside the circle, the system finally said something different.

“Analysis of user Xin Sugo has ended. Suggested class is…”

Jun immediately froze in anticipation.

Finally! How long have I waited for this?!

A minute passed by in silence.

“Are you kidding me? Hey! What class are you telling me to pick?!”

Jun yelled at the top of his lungs out into the vast room.

“The class selection for Xin Sugo is…”

Silence once more reigned supreme. Jun’s eyes twitched with brewing fury.

“I…”

What do I say?

He took a deep breath and calmed his nerves, which were continuously being put to the test.

“I would like to know why there is no class recommended for me.”

His spoke out loud as if he were having a normal discussion. He knew full well that the system could hear him either way.

“There is not enough data to draw a conclusive mapping.”

“What do you mean there isn’t enough data?”

Jun asked in confusion.

Although he didn’t know much about PSI World, he had never heard of an instance where someone was without a class. Sure plenty of people have refuted the recommended class, but they were still given an initial selection.

“There isn’t enough data.”

Jun frowned and tapped his foot impatiently.

“Well then how do we get more data?”

“Unknown, requesting assistance.”

Requesting assistance? Who is supposed to help the system get more data? Wait, how is the system getting its data?

“Assistance has been requested.”

“Well, good. I guess.”

Jun let out another sigh as a silent minute passed by.

“How long do I have to wait?”

“Please hold."

After a few moments of silence, the system finally announced.

“Elder world spirit Acaria incoming, standby.”

The air rumbled and snapped as a series of deafening crashes rocked Jun’s body.

The ground quaked violently, which was then followed up by an intense and overbearing pressure, forcing Jun onto his hands and knees.

What is this?!

He gasped for air while managing to tear his gaze away from the floor. The system’s voice soon echoed throughout the room.

“Welcome, elder world spirit Acaria.”

Jun looked up just in time to see a lithe body step out from a black fissure that vertically split the room apart.

The figure, who he assumed to be Acaria, was fully clothed in a long black cloak. Every part of its body was covered, including its face which was buried deep within the shadows of a hood.

Jun grit his teeth and endured the crushing weight that ushered him to the floor. He glared at Acaria vehemently while the world spirit simply floated a little ways off the floor.

“You’re a tenacious one.”

A sultry voice echoed throughout the room. It’s soothing allure seemed to sap away Jun’s will.

Acaria is a woman?

“No, I am what I am, but if you wish to think of me as one…”

And she can read my mind!

“Mm heh. I like this child.”

Laughter reverberated into the air like crystals tinkling against each other.

Immediately after, the pressure dissipated and Acaria appeared directly before Jun.

Jun’s arms and legs twitched in exhaustion as he heaved in gulps of precious air. His entire body was flushed with sweat while his bones savored sweet freedom.

“I see… The system cannot read your soul, nor anything about you. Even this great one can only read the surface fluctuations.”

Acaria came down onto one knee and inspected Jun as he managed to sit upright. At this point, he barely had the strength to stay awake, let alone stand up.

“Hmm. I sense a darkness within you, child.”

For some reason, Jun felt like the world spirit in front of him was frowning but it was impossible to see her face.

“Do you mind if I…”

Acaria slowly reached out her hand to Jun.

He immediately saw that it was bandaged with a dark cloth. He could faintly make out a black miasma radiating out from the folds of the cloth, causing him to shrink back in apprehension.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

“If you what?”

He eyed the world spirit’s hand cautiously.

“Just relax, I only wish to take a small peek at your soul core. Don’t worry child, normally the system would do this, but it appears it can’t look into yours.”

My soul core huh, reminds me of… well…

Jun nodded his head towards the world spirit, who pushed their outstretched hand towards his chest. Jun felt his heart skip as the miasma drew ever closer, but he remained outwardly calm.

Acaria went mute the moment she touched his chest. Within her mind, she could make out the image of a house, surrounded by a small fence.

It seems this child once had soul image training. Incredible progress for a human.

The world spirit made her way to the front door, where an ominous feeling soon took hold.

What is this? Why am I frightened to pass through?

Acaria cocked her head to the side as she hesitated for a brief moment.

No, he is but a mere child.

With a renewed resolve, she reached out to open the door.

It’s already unlocked?

The entire door disappeared as soon as the handle was turned.

Acaria froze in place as she observed the events happening within the house.

“You are--!”

A beautiful girl sat on the floor with closed eyes, while Jun’s soul body floated above her in an unconscious state. Around his soul body, Acaria could see a faint barrier that periodically crackled with lightning.

However, that wasn’t the most surprising thing. At the edges of the room, a dark abyss seemed to be encroaching ever so slowly toward the two residents.

Acaria instinctively reached for her bandaged hand as she felt the familiar miasma corroding the depths of the house.

Just as Acaria took a brave step forward, the small girl in front opened her eyes. One eye flashed a soul stealing blue, while the other glowed a deadly scarlet.

“Leave.”

The small girl spoke only a single word, but it was all that was needed to send the uninvited guest away. At the same time, Acaria also received an incredible amount of information from the small exchange.

Acaria withdrew her hand from the boy before her.

That was Anasrava. She never died?

“Is it done?”

Jun looked at the world spirit with concern. He couldn’t help but worry with so many hiccups occurring during the tutorial process.

“Yes child, I’ve found everything I need to know.”

Jun scratched his head and made an awkward smile. Her inviting voice pulled a particular heartstring that he never knew existed.

“G-Great. So what class am I recommended to be?”

Acaria tilted her head slightly to the side.

“A better question is, what class do you wish to be?”

“What do you mean?”

The world spirit stood up.

“Perhaps it’s best to show you.”

With a snap of her fingers, the room transformed into a grassy plain while a revitalizing wave washed over Jun, giving him a peculiar type of high.

Whoa, that was intense. Am I fully restored?

He stood up while stretching his limbs. The giddy feeling subsided, leaving him ready to take on the world.

“Use this.”

Jun caught something out of the air without even looking. It was as if he had been trained for that exact moment, which wasn’t far from the truth.

“A sword? What do you want me to do?”

He swung it effortlessly to either side before stabbing it into the ground with a frown. Acaria snapped her fingers again, causing a sleek black man to appear off to the side.

A sickening smile stretched across the length of its face as it cracked its neck side to side. Along the man’s chest burned a series of intricate purple lines—it was an A rank test dummy.

“Fight and kill the dummy. You have 30 seconds, or you will die and be kicked out of the tutorial. Go.”

The dummy didn’t waste any time and immediately charged at Jun with an enormous axe that it conjured from thin air. Jun eyed the sprinting man with scrutiny before pulling the sword out of the ground.

So slow.

“Raaah!!”

The man roared and closed the gap.

The air sliced apart as Jun effortlessly zipped past the man, creating a small vacuum in his wake.

The man continued charging past the small boy for a brief moment, before his head rolled off his shoulders. Jun simply stabbed the sword back into the ground and glanced at Acaria, while the man’s body dematerialized behind him.

“What was the point of this?”

“The dummy’s skin is not normally penetrable with such a feeble sword. An excellent application of sword intent.”

She commented offhandedly before continuing.

“Next, use this.”

Jun narrowed his eyes as Acaria tossed him a bow and only a single arrow. At some point, the sword disappeared from the ground.

With a snap of her fingers, two more replicas of the same man appeared.

“Kill both. 30 seconds once more, or you will die. Go.”

Both men furiously charged at Jun with a vengeance. They hefted their axes overhead as they roared with fury. It was as if they could tell Jun had just decapitated one of their clones.

Jun lifted the bow into one hand and took the arrow into another.

Hmm, it’s been awhile since I’ve done this.

He aimed down the sights as the crazed men drew closer. Once they were within a certain distance, he immediately sprinted to the side.

With these air currents, the bone density, tensile strength of the bowstring… this is the feeling.

Jun exhaled out in a steady stream as he took aim.

A thwip whispered into the air as the arrow pierced through the pair of throats. The two dummies crashed to the floor simultaneously.

“Okay?”

Jun glanced at the hooded world spirit who was spectating with her arms crossed.

“Next.”

Acaria snapped her fingers once more, causing a wave of replicas to appear in an encirclement around Jun. He squinted his eyes as he tried to take a quick headcount.

“You are to use formations only. There are over 100 men. You have five minutes, or you will die. Go.”

The bow in his hand dematerialized the moment she gave the order. Instead, it was replaced with a small wooden stick.

A wand? When’s the last time I used one of these?

Jun smiled as he waved the wand in the air gracefully. As long as he willed it to do so, the wand would leave a trail of floating particles in its wake.

The ground rumbled as the horde of dummies trampled the grass to dust. It was a stampede of chaos and unbridled savagery.

Surrounded by an army of men, Jun didn’t have long to think before he immediately began sketching out a complex array of patterns. It was as if he were conducting a symphony of particle trails.

For sustainability, this will need to be siphoned over here. We can use the castle structure to fortify the core of the formation. After the first kill, we can use the body’s resources to empower the forward section. No, that would take too much time.

Jun shook his head as he studied the complex diagrams that surrounded him.

Oh, the land. Yes we could use the land, but the grass is so pretty… Ah! I know just the thing.

With a flourish, he completed his formation within less than a minute. Just in time for the approaching army to receive one sided justice.

Deadly wind blades shot in every direction the moment the first line of men stepped within range. Severed limbs and mutilated bodies hit the floor as a chorus of screams and angry shouts surrounded Jun.

The grass surrounding Jun began to wilt as more men were shredded to pieces. As soon as he saw this happening, Jun once more transcribed into the air, adding onto his previous masterpiece.

Now we can use the remains to reinvigorate the land, completing the cycle. After all, the land should never receive too much punishment without compensation.

Jun nodded as he carefully took his time completing the formation.

As soon as he finished, the wilting grasslands immediately reversed course, while the bodies that littered the ground were drained of energy.

Just like she taught me…

Jun smiled as the last man fell to a wild wind blade. The boy glanced towards Acaria, who slowly made her way to him.

“So what’s next?”

“Nothing. Those are the three paradigms: power, speed, magic. So tell me, child. Which did you enjoy the most?”

Jun frowned as he thought back to each fight.

I love swinging a sword. Ranged combat also has its own unique thrill. I’ve never been one to shy away from formations. I like them all!

Jun shook his head.

“How am I supposed to choose? I like them all. Isn’t it your job to choose for me?”

“Well… that would normally be the case, but at the same time this isn’t a normal case.”

Acaria waved her hand in the air, causing the grass plains disappeared—they were back in the class selection hall. Blue lines periodically flashed like before, illuminating the dark room.

“The class selection system was created to calculate a user’s soul. It reads their experiences, desires, strengths, weaknesses, and even their traits, then it creates a mapping toward each of the different class paradigms.”

Acaria drew a triangle in the air as she pointed to each of the different corners.

“Should someone lean more toward power, then fighter will be suggested. Should they lean toward speed, then scout will be suggested. Finally, acolyte will be suggested if they have a strong predisposition for magic.”

She then pointed to the dead center of the triangle.

“Rarely does it occur that someone has well balanced traits of all three paradigms. In fact, even the slightest nudge in any direction would cause the system to recommend that corner as an initial class.”

Afterwards, she positioned her finger on the line between two of the corners.

“Occasionally, a user will be well balanced between two of the paradigms. Again, a small nudge will cause the system to favor the other, but sometimes the user can argue with the system to be granted the other corner.”

Acaria shook her head.

“Unfortunately, this isn’t really recommended. The user can’t know how far away from the other corner they are, and the formation wasn’t created to give that type of analysis. Depending on how far off they are will dictate the amount of difficulty they will encounter.”

She waved her hand through the triangle, causing it to shatter into particles.

“Your case is a little special since we can’t use the system to determine your distance to any such corner. At the same time, you’re incredibly proficient with each of the three paradigms. I would suspect that you would be almost exactly in the middle of the triangle.”

Almost as if you were groomed to be…

Acaria refrained from adding her final thought. Jun shrugged his shoulders before speaking up.

“I thought you said my traits would also determine my class, and not just my ability.”

“Yes that is also true, perhaps some traits might nudge you towards a specific corner, but we have no way of knowing as your soul is quite… troublesome.”

More accurately, she’s the one being troublesome, but it seems he doesn’t know about her.

“So what do we do then?”

Jun folded his arms in thought, while Acaria laughed in response. She once more drew a diagram in the air, but this time it was slightly different.

“It’s simple, we choose the fourth corner!”
