Chapter 28: Class Selection (1)

Chapter 28: Class Selection (1)

Jun inched forward in a massive and congested line of people. Everyone had the same destination—the Class Selection Building.

It was only just moments ago that he was with the group of girls, he thought back to their departure.

“Go on ahead and don’t be shy. We’ll be waiting at the café over there.”

Sela pointed at a storefront with a sign that read Legion’s Café.

“Don’t worry if you get lost, I can always find you through our contract.”

Each of the girls then wished Jun the best of luck as he hopped in line.

The entrance isn’t too far now. However…

Jun swiftly moved his hand behind him.

Whack!

“Hey! What’s your problem miss?”

An aggravated and husky voice seethed behind him. Jun merely angled his head sideways and replied without looking.

“My problem? I wonder what the penalty is for intention of harassment. Hmm… I think I saw an option for that in the system…”

Jun casually spouted whatever nonsense came to mind. He had no idea if there was such an option on the system display, but he assumed there should be some sort of authority enforcement in Tutorial City.

“W-What? There is? Of course. Sorry miss, I didn’t even do nothing. Sorry just.”

“Shut up.”

Jun let out an internal sigh.

Wearing a dress is so tedious. Why do I have to put up with this farce… Oh right, Sela could be watching.

While Jun only assumed Sela was watching, he couldn’t be any more correct.

----------------------------------------

Sela and her troupe of girls were currently seated on the second floor of Legion’s Café, where she had a full view of everything that happened below.

Her normally calm demeanor was nowhere to be seen, and her body shook with fury as her eyes burned a hole in a certain man’s back. This was the same exact man who made a motion to touch Jun inappropriately.

“Sister what’s wrong?”

Lulu followed her line of sight. She saw Jun’s figure moving further in the line.

“Nothing. I was just concerned that our Little Xin would be taken advantage of.”

“What?! Why didn’t you say so? We must get revenge for her!”

“Don’t worry about it, it’ll be handled.”

At the same moment, a waitress arrived by their table. Her appearance was professional with black pants and a vest, which covered a fitted white shirt.

The only peculiar part of her ensemble was the dark red mask that covered the top half of her face. In fact, it wasn’t just this waitress dressed in such a fashion, but every employee wore a similar type of mask.

“Welcome to Legion’s Café, which one of you is currently a member?”

The waitress looked around the table as she attracted the ladies attention.

“Oh! That’s me!”

Lulu spoke up with a bright smile.

“No problem, we’ll just need to confirm. Can you share your username?”

The waitress procured a device as she spoke.

“It’s… Eclectic Renaissance…”

Lulu’s face flushed red after announcing her username.

“I’m sorry ma’am, that username isn’t in our system.”

The waitress frowned before glancing back towards Lulu.

“Uh… it might not be in your system yet, but my real name should be there. It’s Lulu Amstel.”

The waitress’ eyes shook the moment Lulu chose to give her name, but not because of her relinquishing her anonymity.

Could it be?

She quickly entered the name into her device, where Lulu’s portrait was immediately brought up.

“Forgive me my lady, it’s an honor to be of service.”

The waitress smiled and bowed low before them, causing Lulu to laugh hesitantly.

“N-No need for any of that, anyway we’re just ordering some snacks and drinks while waiting for our friend. Her name is Xin… I just realized I don’t know her last name, but can you keep an eye out for her?”

The waitress stood up and nodded solemnly.

“Of course, my lady. I will not fail this task.”

Lulu waved her hand about.

“It’s really not a big deal. As for her looks, well. She’s really pretty, you can’t miss her. She’s super pretty!”

The waitress nodded once more.

“Of course, my lady. Now what may I get for you?”

After taking each girl’s order, the waitress finally left to perform her duties. As soon as she disappeared around the corner, the entire table erupted.

“What was all of that about??”

Tiana exclaimed as she stared at Lulu. She wasn’t alone as both Nelath and Shireen similarly wore shocked expressions.

The only person that remained unperturbed was Lulu’s older sister, Sela, who had long expected this sort of outcome.

“Uh, well this is Legion’s Café after all, and since I joined the Legion clan…”

Lulu managed some sort of reply. She was just as surprised as they were, not expecting such a display of respect from the waitress.

“It’s because you were admitted into Legion without going through the system. You girls probably only heard rumors about the clan, right?”

Sela interjected—she was the one with the most experience.

“Y-Yeah, Legion is supposed to be fanatical toward their members.”

Tiana was the first to respond, followed by Nelath.

“I heard they have a leader who acts in the shadows.”

“Someone told me that you can make any enemies you want, as long as it wasn’t with Legion.”

Shireen also pitched in as she sifted through her ditzy memories.

“That’s right. Although, those rumors pale in comparison to the reality.”

Sela spoke in a low voice. Everyone could tell that her words also doubled as a grave warning.

“Even ascendants think twice, even thrice, before offending Legion. If you’re on Legion’s blacklist, you’re essentially dead. Additionally, should a member be offended, the retaliation will come in accordance to the rank of the member.”

Sela gestured towards one of the waiters who walked past them.

“Do you see that red mask? The red masks are only the outer most members of Legion. Lulu joined through her own personal connections. Although I don’t know her rank because I’m not in the Legion clan, I can imagine it’s not low.”

“Ooh.”

All the girls, including Lulu, came to the same understanding as they had just learned a new piece of material.

“Hehe wow! I didn’t realize I was sitting with a superstar!”

Shireen smirked in Lulu’s direction, whose face gained another tint of pink.

“It’s not like that!”

She looked away and pouted her cheeks.

“Lulu, is it possible for us to join? Wouldn’t we be in a really good position if we did?”

Tiana asked with a serious expression. Everyone at the table got quiet, each girl unconsciously leaning in a little closer toward Lulu.

“Well… it’s possible. You just have to have what they’re looking for.”

She gave a vague response, creating more questions than answers.

“What are they looking for?”

“How did you get in?”

Shireen and Nelath quickly inquired as they looked at Lulu with eager eyes.

“I’m sorry I really can’t say but trust me, it’s a unique quality! Legion doesn’t care about your talent or background. So everyone has a proper chance to get into Legion. I think that’s all I can say. Forgive me.”

Lulu gave her friends helpless smile while Sela sighed and shook her head.

“Don’t bother ladies, I tried to pry it out of her mouth for an entire month. What they say about the fanaticism of Legion is entirely true, Lulu is living proof.”

The three friends all felt like they were witnessing another side to their best friend.

“Oh! It looks like Xin finally entered the class selection hall. I’m really excited to find out what her starting class will be.”

The entire time, Sela had always maintained at least one eye on Jun’s distant figure. She marked the man behind him as a personal target, and she was ready to do the same for anyone else who caused trouble for her new friend.

Sela’s comment sparked a new conversation of shared excitement for their friend; each one speculating what Jun’s class and role would be based on his personality.

----------------------------------------

While the girls were deep in conversation, Jun came upon a large empty space.

“So it’s true, the inside of this building really has nothing.”

He took a few more steps forward when all of the sudden, the ambient noise was cut off.

“Hmm?”

With a careless stride, only his footsteps kept him company as he made was way further into the room. He glanced at the entrance behind him and noticed that the massive crowd was nowhere to be seen, instead replaced with a smooth black wall.

“Welcome to the Class Selection Hall.”

He didn’t have to wait long before the system’s voice called out from around him.

“Please stand in the center of the circle and your assessment will begin.”

Lights glimmered on the floor as Jun casually came to the center of the room. A bright blue circle was etched into the ground—he stepped inside it.

“Assessing user Xin Sugo…”

A second later, countless more lines flashed throughout the room. It was only then that Jun realized the formation was etched over the surface of the entire floor.

“Physical assessment complete. Attributes have been unlocked for user Xin Sugo.”

Jun noticed a new selection appear on his system display.

Attributes? I’ll take a look later.

“Analyzing user Xin Sugo…”

Anticipation built within his chest as a multitude of intricate lines on the floor flashed rhythmically.

“It’s happening!”

“Analyzing…”

“Aiyaa, I’m kind of excited!”

“Analyzing…”

“I wonder what I’ll get…”

“Analyzing…”

“Analyzing…”

Jun frowned, tapping his foot impatiently as the system continued to repeat the same word over and over again.

Well, it is a complex formation after all. I should have asked how long this normally takes. I suppose I can take a look at my attributes while waiting.

He made himself comfortable on the floor and focused on the attributes section of his system display.

“Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and… Soul. Seems simple enough. Although… Soul? I could have sworn no professors mentioned Soul…”

He reached deep within the recesses of his memories for any moment in a classroom that gave an explanation for attributes. Alas, his urge for sleep had simply been too strong.

“Other than Soul, each attribute is C rank. Is this good or bad? I’m almost regretting nap time… not. I never regret nap time.”

He mumbled before eyeing the Soul attribute once more.

EX rank… is that even possible? I’ve never heard of anything being EX rank. Well, other than... anyway. I don’t even know if that’s a valid ranking. Is it broken?

Jun shrugged his shoulders and let out a sigh of boredom as he waited for the system to finish its assessment.

A minute passed by, followed by another. Eventually an hour passed.

The system only continued to repeat itself.

Analyzing… Analyzing… Analyzing! Stop analyzing and just tell me already!

It was only after the second hour passed that an unsettling feeling began to take over.

“There’s no way this is right… but what can I do?”

“Analyzing…”

“Yes, I know you’re analyzing.”

“Analyzing…”

“Uh huh.”

“Analyzing…”

“Maybe I should just take a nap.”

“Analyzing…”

“Or maybe I can sign out? Who has the patience for this?”

“Analyzing…”

“What if I leave and I have to start over?”

“Analyzing…”

“Gah!!!”

“…”

“Analyzing…”

Jun’s eyes twitched as the same word echoed endlessly. His unsettling feeling eventually turned into an extremely bad feeling.

No amount of amusement was visible on his face.

“Fine, we’ll do it your way. Take as long as you damn want.”

“Analyzing…”

Hours passed as he sat there with only the system’s voice to keep him company.

----------------------------------------

Some hours before…

“Are you sure she’s not out yet? It’s been over an hour. Doesn’t it only take a few minutes?”

Lulu glanced at her older sister, her voice laced with worry.

“The system display says she’s still inside the Class Selection Hall. It’s odd…”

Sela frowned as she reread the guidance contract with Jun.

Xin Sugo. Contract ends in 22 days. Fee is zero. There’s nothing wrong with the contract, so I should be able to determine her location at any time.

“Either she’s arguing with the system’s class selection or something seems to be wrong with the class selection hall.”

Sela called over the waitress.

“Yes, my lady.”

The waitress naturally directed her attention towards Lulu, but Sela didn’t take any offense toward it.

“We’re going to leave soon. I didn’t see the prices, so I wanted to ask how much we owe.”

Lulu glanced at the empty cups and plates scattered across the table. The waitress simply smiled and shook her head.

“Nonsense, everything here is free for my lady. Thank you for choosing us for your stay.”

“Free? But shouldn’t I pay at least something? Should I tip you? Oh no, what do I do?”

Lulu flustered about and began to ramble.

“We wouldn’t dare accept money from you, it has been my honor to be of service. Please allow me to send you off when you are ready.”

With those final words the waitress patiently stood off to the side. Lulu sighed, shrugging her shoulders.

There was nothing she could do in this matter as the only way to transfer credits was through the system. If the waitress wouldn’t accept her credits then she was at a loss.

“Lulu let’s head out. Don’t worry about it, the café is subsidized by Legion for these types of situations.”

Sela calmed her sister’s nerves while the rest of the girls stretched. Lulu nodded and the group followed the waitress out of the café.

“Please come again!”

The waitress bowed as the group made their way outside. They each thanked the pleasant woman for her service when they passed by.

“Lulu, were you not a member of legion the last time we ate here?”

Shireen asked her friend as she followed behind.

“Not quite. The last time we ate here was over a month ago, so at that time I still hadn’t joined Legion.”

“Hehe you still haven’t told us how you joined Legion.”

Tiana came up alongside Lulu and nudged her with an elbow, who merely gave a small smile.

“Hmm, it’s getting late.”

Sela noted the time on her system display before announcing to her group.

“I know there’s some excitement with our newest member, but we can’t let that intrude on our routine. Lulu, I’ll have you in charge for today’s practice and mission selection.”

Sela pointed toward her sister and spoke in an authoritarian tone, leaving no room for argument.

“But what about Xin? I’m worried about her.”

Lulu and the rest of the group looked at Sela with large watery eyes.

“Don’t worry about Xin. I’ll be keeping an eye out for her and I’ll let you guys know as soon as I’ve met up with her. Something doesn’t seem right with her class selection, but we can’t let that interrupt your progress.”

Lulu frowned with downcast eyes.

“Okay…”

“Okay? I want to hear a yes ma’am. Legion might put you on a pedestal, but to me you’re still a naive little girl. If you don’t give this your full effort than I’ll make sure you never see Xin again!”

Lulu’s eyes went wide.

“You can’t do that!”

She was quick to refute—her friends quickly joined in.

“Yea, you can’t bully Lulu like that!

“Sela, mean.”

“We trusted you!”

Sela merely smiled as she saw the group’s enthusiasm reignite.

“Then work hard! I’ll be staying at our usual spot for the night. I expect to see results from you four.”

With that, she left Lulu and her friends to accomplish their tasks as she disappeared into the distance.
