Chapter 2 - Magic and Understanding

----------------------------------------

Sylas had read about wizards and people with various extraordinary abilities in the history books.

The magical discoveries, the acts of gods, and many wonders and actions.

The mages were capable of such acts, and these are important factors for Sylas.

However, even as a noble, these books didn't contain much detailed information.

Therefore, Sylas thought he needed different sources to research and learn.

"Without enough knowledge and resources, I would be lacking too much in terms of power and my future potential."

He gave 20 silver coins to Gran and tasked him with finding and buying five books.

For ordinary people, 20 silver coins is a substantial amount. It is enough for them to keep living without thinking about the future of their lives and worrying about putting food on the table for about five years.

The commoners and poor people used “Shining Stone Coins” in their everyday lives and were paid by their employers.

“Copper Coins,” used by the traders, and “Imperial Silver Coins,” used by the nobles, big corporations, and merchants.

With 100 Shining Stone Coins, one could get 1 copper coin, and 100 copper coins would get a man or woman 1 imperial silver coin.

The exchange system was simple and good enough for a civilization that was in the high Middle Ages.

To save up 1 Imperial Silver Coin, three members of a normal four-person family would have to do simple labor like portering for a year without spending any of their earnings.

Which is not possible in terms of realistic expectations.

Sylas read the titles of the five books, and his smile grew wider. His mind started working, and his imagination ran wild.

"A History of Magic"

"Understanding the Paranormal"

"Everyday Magic: Simple Spells for Beginners"

"Magic Theory"

"Introduction to Magic and Spells"

“If I weren't at the noble level of the Sylind Family, 20 silver coins wouldn't be enough to buy these books.”

Being a noble granted Sylas the right to purchase many materials and knowledge that were not given to commoners.

There were many things that one could not buy, even if they had the coins for them.

Without wasting more time, Sylas started reading the first book, "Magic Theory." His eyes pierced the book, and he wanted to submerge and drown in the words of magic.

At that moment, he felt a cool sensation above his head. Like a spring breeze, a sensation of calmness and peace.

“Conceptual Understanding, Reality Deciphering, and Passive Ability Activated”

“The ability will stay active from now on, giving the user unparalleled understanding, memory, calculation, and creativity.”

Sylas swallowed as the whispers in his ear ended, and he resumed reading the book.

“This!!”

“This is so strange!!” He exclaimed loudly and got up from the table, like getting shocked by an electrical current.

The meaning he could derive from a single sentence, the way it placed itself in his mind, the ideas, and everything else were overwhelming; the feeling was akin to getting hit by a sledgehammer made up of magical text.

“Take a deep breath, Sylas. You need to be able to control this kind of ability. You have what you need in your soul and mind.”

Sylas began to focus and tried to control his ability. In a short time, he managed to limit his understanding and thoughts.

The huge amounts of information started dilluating and then slowed down a lot, giving him the peace of mind that he sought.

“Okay, I managed to calm it down and stop the surge of information...”

Northern Frost, Silver City—Pamel Family Manor

Fel shook his head, his face turned ugly, and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked at the middle-aged woman in front of him, who was dressed in thick yellow clothing, and began to speak.

"Eri, have we really still not managed to capture the Sylind Family's palace? We should have already destroyed the Sylind family by now," he said, disapproving of his strategist.

Not being able to capture and completely destroy a fallen baron family with only two members made him feel uncomfortable. It was a slap to his face and his ability to act upon a free resource.

Eri spoke up, her face showing slight discomfort and unease.

"My Lord, even though the Sylind family is in decline, they still hold the title of 'Baron' in the official imperial records. We need to conceal our actions and activities."

Fel took a deep breath and closed his eyes slightly. He started massaging his temples to calm himself down.

"It is all good; they cannot retailite against us by any means at all. At least not from the Sylind Family."

They weren't afraid of retaliation from the Sylind Family, but if they openly and blatantly attacked the Sylind Family, which was still officially a baron family, other noble families could use their actions as a pretext to cause problems for them.

Fel did not want such a thing to happen.

"Do you think Sylas and Gran could recover enough to seek revenge on us?" he asked.

Eri smiled.

"There is no chance of that happening. They are likely struggling just to make ends meet right now. The Pamel Family has more than 50,000 soldiers, resources exceeding a hundred thousand silver, numerous members, allied friends, and lands. The Sylind family poses no threat whatsoever," she said.

After listening, Fel let out a sigh of relief.

"For now, let's forget about the plan to capture the Sylind family's palace. Let's focus on what we can take from the other families and continue our future plans through them," he said.

Eri bowed slightly.

"As you command, my Lord," she said.

Sylas, despite his ability, finished reading the 400-page "Magic Theory" book in just twenty minutes.

"It's quite a simple and basic-level book, but it gave me the information I needed to start."

“Magic”

“It was the natural energy that could be controlled by combining the mental and spiritual power within a person. The amount and quality of a person's mental and spiritual power were directly proportional to turning their imagination and ideas into reality.”

“Desiring something, working on the desired subject, controlling the magical energy with the mind to achieve the desired result, and activating it with the spirit to make it real.”

“I can't believe it's this simple.”

He got up from his desk and looked out the window again.

“Actually, it's not simple. The writings themselves are quite complex. It seems simple to me because of my ability.”

“My understanding and mind tell me that the reason I have this ability is because I'm not from this world.”
