Volume One Chapter 42: Color Shock

Color Shock

(Brother)

Spoiler :

So here it is...have I mentioned before that I am nocturnal? Well when I am allowed to I always end up staying up too late and then when I go to sleep it is technically the next day...and then I sleep in until the afternoon which makes it easier to stay up late which...well you get the idea...

So what does this bad habit have to do with you guys? Nothing really except I keep finding myself sleeping or otherwise wasting time when I could be doing something productive like writing chapters ! :)

This chapter resulted from an idea I had a few months ago...I found myself writing an arc of chapters from a new point of view...when I tried to figure out how to connect the arc I had written with what I had already had...(not sure if that is correct grammar but whatever) it eventually lead to me coming up with this...or at least the *spoiler* ending of this...which after which comes that arc I spoke of...

Still not done with the art...but good things take time :) or at least thats what I hopes...

Not much longer after my brothers connected, then the rest of our company of former unhatched started to do so as well.

The first were shall we say were Peeper’s friends, the other seers and ones that were quite talented in psychic and mental magic abilities, a while after them one by one the rest also managed the feat.

Happily my ‘inner circle’ of friends Little Light, Blinker, Shout, Hide, and Pain were among those who had been on the quicker side of things and so before I could even begin to really miss them I was able to talk to them again.

It didn’t matter that they were in a different room from myself and my siblings, for with the aid of the mental net they felt close to me, still.

A while after we had all hatched and accustomed ourselves to moving around in our bodies, the servant dragons brought in some glowing rocks that though at first hurt my guys from their brightness I quickly got used to them, more importantly the rocks gave just enough light that my night vision switched off and I was able to see in color.

At first I was so discombobulated and puzzled by the new change that I couldn’t figure out what was different, but with a smirk Sister gave me an obvious hint when she sent over to me a picture familiar to me from one of her many lessons that of a rainbow.

After that it was similar to the time that I experienced when I was first able to see all over again, I couldn’t stop staring at everything.

The walls of the hatching cave we were in was a smooth light grey, the sand we sat, stood or crawled on was a cool white and the glow stones that enabled all of this vision candy to happen were dull and dim yellow, but to me still nice to gaze upon.

However what attracted my attention the most was neither the cave surroundings nor the glowing stones but the other dragons.

With the addition of color even the servant dragons that had begun to fade into the background became riveting. Most of them were entirely brown and a few of them were green but no matter the color to me they became quite a sight to see.

However I was soon completely distracted from the servant dragons when out of curiosity I glanced in the direction of my siblings and was stunned.

Peeper had a bright colorful I guess you might call it an electric pink hide and her diamond shaped forehead gem was a fiery orange gold. Door and Hinge on the other hand were a mix of blue and yellow green, only Door was a bit bluer and Hinge more green, the square shaped stones on their heads were both silver.

I am not sure I can describe how but my siblings completely outshone anything I had seen yet. Their colors were not just different in type but also in vibrancy. Some of the servant’s scales seemed a bit dull but all of my siblings almost seemed to glow themselves.

The fact that they were much smaller than the servants rather than diminish their beauty rather showcased it and to mine eyes they became the focus point out of the entire scene no matter who I was looking at.

I myself curious to know what I appeared like to others requested an image from Peeper, like them I am not ashamed to say I was beautiful. I was one of the largest of our group Door and Hinge being only a little smaller, and Peeper much smaller. My main coloration was a dark deep blue, and my forehead gem was black, like Peeper it was diamond shape however the ‘cut’ of the gem as it were was curved instead of straight like hers.

Don’t get me wrong here, while I was indeed quite pleased with my appearance that was it. I have not and don’t think I will ever be a vain dragon. While hubris was and continues to be a threat, obsession with self-beauty was luckily not one of my many faults.

My thinking is basically this, while in a few cases it can be quite useful, to me power skill and the confidence to use them is far more valuable. Also in many ways your own beauty isn’t something you can really change so why bother caring about it?

I am sure of course I would think differently if I wasn’t beautiful or handsome as many other males call it, but I was I was lovely enough to satisfy my own great pride and then some and I am not bragging. In fact as I will soon tell you about in the future I think I got even better with time.

However, no matter how stunning and fascinating experiencing color for the first time as well realizing my own beauty was, I only consider it a minor moment in my lifetime.

This is because what I think to be one of the most surprising and important events of my life to happen even now occurred only a short time after this incident surrounding color, happening just as all of us had started to settle and become almost completely accustomed to this new life on the outside.

We had just finished eating a meal as per usual and had been calmly chatting, as you would expect about today’s meat when suddenly and strangely one of the servant dragons entered and made a few gestures with their front feet, and they all in unison left the room.

Then a few moments later after a warning from Sister another dragon entered.

She was much larger than any of the servant dragons that I had seen before, her hide was a stunning purple far more vibrant then any I had seen her round forehead gem was a black so dark that it almost seemed to shine, and when she spoke her voice was like divine music which made the occasional baby talk or lullabies heard from the servants seem like grating ear pain in comparison, I held my breath in shock.

“It is as she told you, I am your mother Terabethia, and my heart is most gladdened to meet you all at last.”

The Dragon Queen said.
