Chapter 12 “The Slithering Terror”

Chapter 12 “The Slithering Terror”

The snake slowly opened its heavy, nonexistent eyelids; its body, still recovering from the pain, lied motionless on the ocean floor. Why had it done something so reckless? It could have died from the poison or while unconscious, eaten by another creature.

“Because it looked thrilling! Isn’t it boring to be always meticulous and careful~” that’s what this former human would have answered, and they still thought the same, thus this on stupidity bordering action, resulting in a near-death experience, was born.

But as usual, the snake was in high spirits as it happily inspected its reward.

Skill “Devour” unlocked!

Devour:

Can consume prey that would be too big even for a snake to eat!

Immediately after receiving the skill, the exp-hungry snake searched for a guinea fish to test this useful-sounding skill on. And it already had an area in mind that it had avoided up till now, due to the creatures living there being still too big for the snake to eat. Excitedly, it made its way toward the chasm that lingered at the end of the coral reef, as if waiting for it to fall into its bottomless abyss.

All creatures of the reef hid in terror and fear, observing the slithering disaster as it made its way towards the chasm, which they all dared not enter, consuming all poor creatures not quick enough to flee. They all let a sigh out in relief when they saw its white tail vanishing into the darkness of the abyss, for they were sure it would never make it back.

The abyss never loses hold of what once entered! The reef was a heaven in comparison to what lurked in this darkness! Many creatures living in the reef had this realization whenever one of the chasms inhabitants decided to come up and wreak havoc, the weak reef creatures were no match for them and ended up being devoured mercilessly.

So all were sure, even though the slithering snake was scary, it would not survive this terrifying place. As the creatures were absolutely sure the white disaster was gone, they grabbed their colorful party hats, as today was a joyous day worth celebrating! The snake had left! We are safe now! The fish shouted, falling in each other’s arms.

For this one day, they all had agreed to a truce; side by side, hunter and prey partied away, forgetting their worries, forgetting that they as well would set out tomorrow to mercilessly kill and consume their next meal yet again.

“How dare you leave just like that! I’m not done with you! Hey, why are you all celebrating without me?!” In the cozy embrace of seaweed, the forgotten and ignored leafy sea dragon grumbled silently.
