Chapter 10 “Pitiful Fish”

Chapter 10 “Pitiful Fish”

The distancing disregarding snake brushed with its tail against the poor, unsightly fish, and its body froze in utter shock as it shrieked desperately, “Please, don’t touch me! I-I don’t want to hurt you!”

But the snake, seemingly amused by its behavior, continued, coming awfully close to its dorsal spines, which the scared panicking ball of a coral tried to hide, having them neatly merged with its skin.

“P-Please don’t; it’s dangerous! You could die!” It screeched as its anguishing memories of the fateful day that changed its laughable life forever reemerged. That day, that disastrous day, was deeply etched into its mind as if to punish itself for the tragedy, to never forget what it had done, and to prevent it from happening ever again.

But now, before its teary eyes, it was about to repeat its gravest sin again. Still frozen in place, it was unable to do anything as the snake’s tail slowly pulled up its hidden dorsal spine.

“Will it end like it did back then?” It despaired at that thought. Frantically, it tried to move its coral-like body, but to no avail. The fear, its past trauma prevented it from moving. After such a long time of being content with staying motionless, now it cursed its unmoving self.

*Prick*

As countless thoughts ran through its tiny, desperate mind, it felt a familiar sensation, one that let its memory lit up brightly as the here and now grew blurry.

It felt one of its dorsal spines penetrate the scales of the snake, and the venom that left its poison sacs intruding its next victims body. As the snake slowly writhed in pain and sank to the ground, the traumatized pitiful Stonefish’s mind overlapped this gruesome scene with another, letting it relive its painful past.

Once upon a time, two happy fish swam through the beautiful colored reef. They had been best friends since childhood and did everything together; what a truly blessed friendship!

As they frolicked in the water currents and enjoyed their meager existences, one of the friends stopped to admire a gorgeous pink coral, which stuck out proudly from the rest of its less fortunate colored siblings.

“What a pretty coral!” The small, with strips of bright orange and white adorned fish said to its friend excitedly, “I wish I could change my scale color like you do!” It swam around its ugly blob-like friend, complementing its abilities.

The round fish was always grateful for its best friend, who stayed by its side even when the other fish bullied it for its detestable appearance. This tiny fish was the only one that accepted it for who it was. O what truly beautiful friendship!

The Stonefish naively thought that their tranquil peaceful days would never come to an end, and even less by its own small fins.
