Chapter 23 — Do You Trust Me?

Chapter 23 — Do You Trust Me?

"Dark Wraith? you mean like Hell Wraiths? those ones from hell?"

Daisy took another glance at the spell tome before shaking her head negatively.

"No"

"According to the lore in this tome, Hell Wraiths are different from Dark Wraiths. Hell Wraiths are basically corrupted damned souls. As for Dark Wraiths.. they are the collective amalgamation of negative energies. However they are very powerful and they would continue to grow powerful the more negative emotions they absorb. Their rate of absorption is even more monstrous than Malevolents. Once they are attracted to a particular region, they would not rest until they suck out all the negative emotion, leaving it in desolation.."

"So how do we kill it then?" Aletta's expression was grim.

The Dark Wraith had barely spent a week in Garner falls and a hundred and twenty people had already died. Although the Dark Wraith fed on the negative emotions in people, it was merciless and hardly left any survivors after feeding.

Aletta was anxious to take this Dark Wraith down before it began feeding again and stewning more imploded corpses!

"The Dark Wraiths have no none weaknesses. According to the lore once they finish feeding off a city, village or town, they go into deep hibernation, awaiting the day they will be summoned again"

Aletta scoffed.

"What? so you expect us to just sit this out and watch as this whole town becomes a slaughter fest?"

Daisy shrugged.

"Don't look at me. I wasn't the one who penned down those statement"

"That won't work" Alett shook her head as she began pacing around.

"There's nothing in existence that is completely unkillable. If we just calm down an--and think w-we.. "

"It seems to me that you're the one in need of taking a breather " Jason who had been silent all this while finally spoke up.

"Why are you so calm? a lot of lives are at stake!"

Jason was taken aback. He had been friends with Aletta for years and although she seemed to have recently developed an habit of teasing him, she always tolerated him even when he screws up. Today was the first time he had ever seen her yell at him with that kind of annoyed look.

"Why bother about their lives anyway? it's not like you know them personally " he grumbled.

"What did you say?!" Aletta glared at him sharply.

"I said I think I might have a way to kill this Dark Wraith or whatever you call it" he lied.

"This isn't the time to mess around Jason" Aletta didn't even take his words seriously.

She had been a Hunter far longer than Jason. If even her didn't know how to kill a Dark Wraith.. what kind of suggestion could Jason possibly propose that could work?

"Look Aletta I really don't have the time to explain.. do you trust me or not?" he gave her a deep look.

"Pft. Are you honestly asking me that? I seem to recall trusting you when you told me we were going for shoplifting three years ago. According to you, it was all just to get your father's attention once the police took you out in. But apparently when the police came, alarms blazing, you made a run for it, leaving me to carry all the blame. Oh! before I forgot.. that wasn't the only time I trusted you only to get played in the end. Can't you see what you are? a narcissist who only cares about himself!"

"Are you done?" Jason grinned calmly.

It was like all of Aletta's earlier words had nothing to do with him.

"You want to save this people.. I respect that even though I think it's stupid after all the mission was to kill this Dark Wraith, not rescue some unknown misers. But since you want to play heroine, have it your way "

Jason confidently tucked his hands into his pocket as he began making for the study exit.

"However you have no way to stop this threat while I on the other hand, I do. So if you want to play hero, then you have to trust me. The same way I didn't force you to trust me in the past, I'm not forcing you right now. It's your choice though I already know what you are going to choose " dropping these words, Jason left the study, leaving both girls in silence.

"How do you even put up with that jerk?" Daisy gave Aletta a baffled look.

"What do you mean!"

"Isn't that the Jason you've always sung to me about? your crush?" Daisy replied with an ambiguous smirk.

"We are not having this discussion " Aletta clicked her tongue as she attempted to chase after Jason.

"Don't tell me you are going to run back into his arms? the jerk is totally all for himself. From the little I heard just now, how sure are you that he's capable of defeating this Dark Wraith? what if things go south and he abandons you, like he always does?"

"Don't act so self righteous to me" Aletta hissed with annoyance.

"If our roles were reversed and Jason was my brother, wouldn't you do worse?"

"There's a difference " Daisy retorted.

"Stephen is a caring person. He is empathetic and selfless.. unlike the jerk that just walked out of that door "

"Tch. You don't know Jason " Aletta was about to leave when Daisy grabbed her by the wrist.

"And you know him better.. yet why are you acting so stupid just because of some cru--"

"I have no feelings for Jason" Aletta cut her off before she could complete her sentence.

"Yeah right. And I hate Wiccans "

Aletta rolled her eyes.

"Think what you want. Perhaps Jason is just bluffing.. perhaps he isn't. However I have seen what he's capable of and If he has a shot at this, then let's take the risk. At least it would be better than just standing at the sidelines and watching the residents of this town being slaughtered "

.

.

A couple hours later, Stephen finally returned from his little trip. Parking the vehicle the corner within the large premises of Daisy's house, he had just alighted when he saw Jason doing a round of pushups.

"What are you doing?" his lips curled up as he approached the latter.

"What do you think?" Jason scoffed, in the middle of thrusting his upper body up before leaning or back down on the mat sprawled across the ground.

"I know what you're doing" Stephen noticed the large amount of sweat continuously rolling off Jason's skin.

"Did you get injected with chicken blood while I was away? J.C the party monger doing pull ups?"

"I was a party monger yep. But.. I ..ahah.. wasn't a softie alright? just go away and stop distracting me"

"Fine " Stephen raised both hands in surrender while laughing in amusement as he walked into the house.

"Aletta?" he called out.

"I'm at the study!" Aletta's voice replied, her voice sounding distant.

Running through the flight of stairs, Stephen arrived at the study, to see Aletta flipping through the pages of an old looking Tome.

Scattered around her feet was a heap of tomes.

"What's up with J.C? I saw him doing pushups " he asked suspiciously.

"Jason is unpredictable.. I have no idea what his intentions are " Aletta chose to keep her earlier arrangement with Jason a secret.

"Alright" Stephen looked around.

"Where is Daisy? I passed by her school and it was already closed for the day"

"She went to purchase some necessary Items we are going to use to kill the Wraith" Aletta replied.

However inwardly she knew it was one of Daisy's tactic to avoid seeing Stephen.

"We are not hunting a Malevolent?" Stephen scratched his head.

"Nope. It is a Dark Wraith. Apparently it was summoned by Nora" Aletta gave Stephen the full gist of the situation.

Of course She left out the part where the Dark Wraith couldn't be killed.

"If we are facing a Wraith.. doesn't that mean my supply run was meaningless?" Stephen exhaled regretfully.

"No. With the Blessed guns and the mountain ash trap, we would be able to weaken the Wraith while we strike the killing blow"

"You guys found a way to kill it?" Stephen was relieved.

The weakest Wraith was equivalent to a level 10 Malevolent. Although Blessed items could cause some damage and a trap formed from mountain ash could weaken it, Stephen wasn't overconfident to think he or his sister had the ability to kill it for good.

Perhaps they might have a shot at exorcising it had it been it was possessing a foreign item or a corpse. But battling a Wraith in its true body.. forget fighting chance.. the percentage of their survival was slim!

"Yes.." Aletta nodded to Stephen's earlier question.

"Daisy found a spell to annihilate it for good "
