Chapter 24 - Being the nice guy

Arctic Black Zone - Beach

I woke up to see some changes that were pleasant and unexpected.

My trainer level has increased by a whopping two levels. I can tell that my little murder fish was working hard in my absence.

She didn’t gain any new abilities so I can only assume the battle junkie had numerous fights in my absence.

I check my stats and notice a spot for logs. I bring up the logs briefly to see what exactly she got up to.

So she fought around five battles against increasingly more difficult Pokemon that I can only assume Anna was using. One battle against the Piplup which resulted in another thrashing, the familiar Machop, Oddish and a Remoraid and finally something of a challenge. She fought and beat a freaking evolved Slowbro. I can only assume that it was newly evolved since she won and isn’t too injured as I inspect her in her fish bowl.

I’m sure the nurse Joy was again perplexed and forced to use potions to heal Sparky up since I don’t think conventional methods work to bring her back to health.

We go through our usual routine when the girls wake for breakfast and then head to the trainers area.

I notice that the SS Ketchum is still undergoing extensive repairs with most of the trainers spending their time with their Pokémon to assist with the effort to fix the damaged ship.

Due to the repairs to the ship and the threat from the unknown serpents Kabu has decided to allow us to explore the land and beach around the area. He made the girls promise to come back at the first sign of danger.

SHIFT POV

So today I have a plan.

Since I'm not gaining any levels from battling I need to increase my trainer level. I got some more potions, a repel and something called an incubator as well as some spare xp from useless Pokéballs. I dump the exp into trying to unlock some new features.

*DING - MAP & Compass unlocked*

I feel like somebody is taking a jab at me. It’s not my fault I suck at geography.

I quickly bring up the map and notice that most of the area is blank. It appears that only the area’s that I have actually visited are currently shown. I am thankful that the map does not show the exact route to discover these locations since there seem to be many circles widening outwards at quite a fair number of points on the map.

I definitely wasn’t swimming around lost and in circles. I was just scouting around my area to make sure it was safe…..

The best thing though was the Compass, as now I would always know if I was …. potentially… lost.

We arrive at the beach with some familiar looking water chickens. I sorely hope the girls don’t just decide to stay here for the day. I want to explore!

Almost as if the girls have read my mind, we decide to go further inland to explore. This does mean that Sparky needs to be carried in a fishbowl since she can’t swim on land, at least not yet. I can’t wait for her to evolve as I imagine a large fin sticking out from the dirt as she uses dig to traverse. Although I think the medium in which she travels would certainly impact her.

I just don’t think she is ever going to “swim” through rock or ice.

We continue to travel onto higher ground and up into the mountainous areas. And it is with amazement I stare as we reach the top of the incline. In the distance are trees that have been iced over and some very beautiful creatures eating and foraging for food. I must say these are the first Pokémon that I have observed out here that are not flesh eating monsters. It is a pleasant surprise.

Those things are… hmm dinosaurs… long necks….. I use identify on the little ones in the herd and realise they are Amaura. The larger ones must therefore be Aurorus.

“Anna, do you think we could catch one of those?”

Jess looks at Anna who just shakes her head.

“Those are pack creatures, and probably very high levelled. I don’t think we can successfully capture one without angering the whole herd.”

So we continue onwards as we skirt around the beautiful herd.

We are almost out of range when one of the Amaura spots us and inquisitively comes to investigate. The mother Aurorus keeps an eye on her charge and looks at us as if to say… play nice.

I carefully watch as the little dino walks up to the girls and sniffs them. She then approaches me and sniffs me as well. Her mother makes a sound to call her back to her side and the little one bops me nose to nose and then ambles away.

Well that was just the most touching thing ever.

We continue to head away and further out into the expanse, however nothing else seems to be as interesting on our trip. Sadly there was nothing to battle and we as a group turn around and head back the way we came.

On our return trip however I can see that the Aurorus and Amaura are lumped together in a defensive circle facing outwards. Clearly it wasn’t us since they didn’t have this attitude when we approached the last time.

Something is wrong and we take shelter behind some trees.

The atmosphere is tense and I can almost taste the fear in the air.

I watch as a large predatory T-rex approaches the herd. Looking at the jaws and fangs on that creature it is easy to realise this is no herbivore.

Saliva drips down from its mouth and the rex’s breath comes out in steamy puffs. He is heavily scarred and clearly an intimidating creature. The Pokémon roars a challenge and then literally sprints at the group of herbivores.

The Aurorus panic and run in all directions when the rex starts to fling rocks that are ripped from the ground at the group. Some of those heavily impact the herd and I notice a little Amaura is heavily wounded from the throw.

As the rest of the herd retreats the mother Aurorus stands against the rex who hones in on the injured calf.

The rex successfully body slams the mother to the side and prepares to eat the little baby.

I watch with bated breath as the rex moves in for the kill. And then the unexpected happens.

Jess throws with all her might and a red and white object sails through the air, hits the little baby on the head and sucks it inside.

The rex is livid and instead attacks the mother Aurorus. He tears into her body and continues to critically injure her. I watch as another red and white ball sails through the air towards the mother only to be knocked away by the predator's tail.

He takes a firm grip of her neck *CRUNCH* and she ceases struggling.

Mr Rex then turns his attention towards us and ROARS. Clearly he is not happy that he missed out on the little Amaura.

As much as Jess would have loved to run in and grab the Pokéball there is just no opportunity with the rex standing so close.

We are forced to retreat back towards the SS Ketchum and ask for assistance.

The girls find Kabu who quickly agrees to send out some trainers to deal with the threat of a large predator so close by.

Change POV

“Girls, you did well not to bring that creature back to the ship. I’m going to send out some ACE trainers and the film crew to see what the creature is and to try to either capture or subdue it. If that fails I need you to be prepared for the chance that we will have to put it down.”

The girls both nod soberly and we head off with ACE trainers and film crew in tow.

We approach the area where the rex was last spotted. There are just the scraps from the eaten Aurorus. Just bits and pieces as it seems the beast ate almost everything including the bones.

The ACE trainers take some time and find a battered looking Pokéball buried in the dirt and gravel. It looks like the rex tried to trample the thing into opening. Jess is given the Pokéball which she quickly pockets. She gives me the side eye. Hey, I'm not going to hide your Pokéball….. this time. See i’m a nice guy!

Jess' first actual Pokémon is actually a pretty impressive specimen. I don’t get the feeling that Amaura are a very common species in the explored regions. I mean… It's a prehistoric dinosaur.

The trainers continue to follow the rather obvious tracks left by the large Bi-pedal Pokémon until we reach an outcropping of rocks and a large cave entrance.

Sleeping out the front of the entrance is our target.

I get a good look at the red and yellow striped rex with fur covering his head like a lion's mane.

This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

One of the ACE trainers recognises the creature and whispers to the group “Tyrantrum”

As much as the trainers would like to catch this Pokémon for themselves they know exactly how dangerous, strong and violent these creatures can be.

The trainers agree that they will go all out and attempt to subdue it but they expect to fail. Apparently, these beasts are notorious for refusing capture. Unless they can knock it out which again is unlikely as their rage fuels them, they are going to have to put him down.

I watch as multiple Pokémon are summoned including an evolved Eevee, I’m pretty sure the water type was a Vaporéon, a scarred looking Arcanine, an angry looking Ursaring and finally rounding out the group is a truly gigantic beast, a fully evolved Steelix.

The Pokémon charge up their attacks and blast the sleeping Pokémon with a shit ton of firepower. The time spent getting used to the Black Zone has definitely been paying dividends for these trainers Pokémon.

The Tyrantrum wakes and his rage is palpable. Before he can get to his feet though he is tackled by the Steelix which is slightly larger than him. The Tyrantrum takes the opportunity to Crunch into the Steel/Rock type. Clearly this is an empowered attack as the rex doesn’t lose all his teeth in this action. He continues to take literal chunks out of the Steelix who screeches in pain.

The Steelix is quickly recalled by his trainer giving the other Pokémon the opportunity to bombard the dinosaur with another wave of superpowered attacks.

The problem now is that if the rex gets close to any of the other Pokémon they will likely be no match for his strength and sheer size. The Ursaring and the Arcanine play a dangerous game of tag with the Tyrantrum. Darting in and out of his reach and keeping him distracted.

This in turn means that the Vaporeon can continue to blast the Rock type with Hydro Pump.

The only problem with this strategy is that the repeated attacks are wearing out the little fish fox’s stamina as well as making the Tyrantrum increasingly more frustrated and aggressive.

One ACE trainer attempts to throw a Ultra ball at the weakened Pokémon, but the dino just swats the ball to the side with his large tail.

The Arcanine has started to use some sort of rock technique to make the ground around the angry Dino into quicksand which quickly turns to mud due to the Vaporeons attacks. This isn’t as effective as hoped since the rex just stomps and sends a wave of mud cascading around the other Pokémon.

Arcanine is caught up in the super effective attack which seems to be doing both water type damage from the mud, rock type from the pebbles and ground type. As the wave envelops the large dog he is quickly recalled into his trainer's Pokéball.

The Tyrantrum is furious and selects his next target, only two opponents are left.

He engages with the Ursaring who is no longer able to dodge the rex. One quick clawed foot onto the bear and a large chomp of her front paw means she is out for the count as well.

I fire a couple blasts of Physic at the rex to little effect, and I instruct Sparky to try to blind the beast with bright light, this seems to have some effect as the Dino pauses his charge as he can’t see where he is headed.

*DING - Sparky has learned Flash Bang - blind your opponent - 30 MP per use*

The ACE shouts at his Pokémon, “END HIM, Do it!”

The Vaporeon looks sadly at the Tyrantrum and then fires a final beam at the rex as it charges her.

This is no normal water gun, no this is the 2 x effective Ice Beam and it appears as if the Vaporeon is emptying everything out in the attack.

The exhausted Vaporeon stands on shaky legs as the giant rex stops moving forward, stumbles and collapses onto its side.

It releases a few shuddering breaths before its eyes go glassy and its breathing stops.

*DING - Trainer exp awarded, Gained 2 levels*

Max capacity increased to 2/3 Pokémon.

*Ding - Level cap broken, Seel and Carvanha gain 3 levels* Bonus HP and MP awarded for defeating a foe far above you, fighting numerous Pokémon and winning a 2v1 battle.

Ahhh seems my Sparky took on the Oddish and Machop at the same time?

With the TYRANTRUM defeated the news crew goes to interview the fatigued looking ACE’s and girls, congratulations resound as they stand around the fallen dinosaur.

Almost absentmindedly, one of the film crews summons his Physic type Kadabra who is able to confirm that there are no living Pokémon nearby. As such the trainers say the place is now safe to continue to explore.

Since everybody is distracted, I shuffle into the cave and notice an unattended egg at the back of the cave. Score! I can’t capture it but I sure as hell know who that egg belongs to. A great addition to my growing group of monsters is what.

I select the incubator option and the egg is placed inside the storage container. Since this counts as a form of capture the egg is placed back into my “inventory”. With none the wiser I continue back to the group who are preparing to explore the cave.

After a brief inspection where they find a nest but no eggs they decide to return back to the SS Ketchum for some R&R and to celebrate yet another new Pokémon capture for Jess.
