I Accomplished Something

Before Edward could teach Johnny how to breathe, he assigned him a rigorous physical exercise regimen. The morning of his first day of exercising, Edward barged into a sleeping Johnny’s room at five in the morning carrying a large tin pot of water and dumped it onto his head causing Johnny to jump awake as he choked on the water.

“Are you awake?” Edward mischievously asked.

Still coughing from the water being dumped onto him, Johnny pushed past Edward with his clothes drenched and went downstairs to prepare for his first day of training. Edward followed Johnny downstairs.

“What’s for breakfast?” Johnny asked.

“Nothing for you, until you finish your daily training,” Edward answered still giggling from the prank he pulled.

“What? How am I supposed to have enough energy to get through it all.” Johnny complained.

“You’ll figure it out, I’m sure,” Edward remarked as he began to make breakfast for himself.

“If you’re fast enough. There may be something left over for you to eat.” Edward added.

Johnny conceded without much of a fight and went to run his ten miles for the day. It took Johnny four hours to complete just his run, he then went back inside drenched in sweat, and began to do fifty sit-ups and fifty push-ups. He finally finished after an hour of meditating.

“Well done for your first time. It only took six hours.” Edward said to praise Johnny.

Johnny was unable to respond due to his body being exhausted and eventually he collapsed in the middle of the dining room floor.

“Are you hungry?” Edward asked, already knowing the answer to the question he asked.

The smell of a greasy burger filled the air and nearly revitalized Johnny, causing him to pull himself up onto his feet and into one of the wooden chairs as he waited for the burger to be placed on a plate in front of him. Once the cooking had stopped, what was placed in front of Johnny wasn’t a greasy burger, but a freshly simmered salmon.

Johnny stared at the plate in silence just before he weakly grabbed his fork and knife to begin eating. As he was about to cut the fish with his knife, Edward quickly snatches the plate away from Johnny.

“Johnny, remember, life is in everything, so we must show respect to both the life we give and the life that we take away. Lower your head and close your eyes.” Edward instructed Johnny.

Being too weak to put up any resistance, Johnny put down his knife and fork, lowered his head, and closed his eyes.

“Be grateful to the egg that the fish came from and to the river that housed it and led it towards us.” Edward continued.

“Be empathetic yet grateful to the ones that gave birth to the fish, since without them you wouldn’t be eating their child, yet you were the one that took their child away from them,” Edward said in conclusion before he placed the plate of salmon down back in front of Johnny.

Hearing the plate being placed back in front of him, Johnny opened his eyes, raised his head, and finally ate the salmon.

A year passed, and Johnny’s body had undergone a change. The muscles on his body had become more well-defined and his hair grew long enough to drape over his right shoulder. On the usual morning of his daily training, Edward once again barged into Johnny’s room carrying a large pot of water, to find that Johnny wasn’t asleep in his bed, instead, he was lying in wait to dump a bucket of water of his own onto Edward.

“Got ya!” Johnny exclaimed excitedly.

Drenched in water, Edward began to laugh.

“Fine, you win.” Edward said

“I finally got you back after a long year of being drowned in water every morning!” Johnny shouted.

“Yeah, yeah. After you’ve finished your morning training, meet me outside. I think you’re finally ready to learn how to breathe. You’ve come a long way from being that child that barely spoke to anyone. “Edward said with a smile.

“Will do,” Johnny said as he walked out of his room leaving behind a drenched Edward.

Thirty minutes later, Johnny had returned from running his usual ten miles and after another five minutes he had finished his sit-ups and pushups, and lastly, he meditated for an hour. He then went outside in the yard to meet with Edward.
