Thinking better of the situation, Edward decided to take them out of Queens.

“What are you doing!?” Johnny frantically asked.

“You couldn’t handle it. It was too early to bring you back here.” Edward responded.

“We need to find your son!” Johnny shouted.

“We will, but I will not let all of the progress you’ve made be undone!” Edward shouted back.

“I’m fine!” Johnny continued.

“My decision is final,” Edward commanded, shutting down the conversation.

“So where are we going now? We don’t have any other leads; the information broker was useless.” Johnny sarcastically asked.

“Back to the college, I want to talk to Deshawn,” Edward answered.

“We barely got out of there alive!” Johnny shouted.

Without saying a word, Edward looked at Johnny from the reflection of the mirror as if to give him a warning and Johnny heeded it, he gave up any opposition to whatever Edward wanted to do. The rest of the ride back to the college was silent. Once they arrived, they both got out of the car and were greeted by several men that wore red bandanas to cover their faces, each openly carried a pistol.

“Where’s Deshawn,” Edward demanded.

“Where you think he is?” One of the men answered.

“Bring me to him.” Edward continued.

“Nah” Another man answered.

While Edward handled the members of the Mad Dogs, Johnny’s eyes wandered around the area, and he caught a glimpse of a black van that drove deeper onto the campus into the garage. However, he decided not to say anything since he remembered the only rule in the streets, to not snitch.

“Fine we’ll take you to him, but only you,” One of the men said finally giving in.

“My son comes with me too.” Edward insisted.

Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site.

“Nah, you not in any position to make a demand. You lucky we ain’t air you out on sight after that bullshit you pulled earlier.” One of the men commented.

“I’ll be fine.” Johnny insisted.

After he took a moment to think through the situation, Edward agreed to go with the masked men into the Student Union building alone. Meanwhile, Johnny was left by himself, surrounded by members of the Mad Dogs all over the campus doing various activities. Hours later, Edward was escorted out of the building by the same men that brought him in.

“We’re going home,” Edward told Johnny as he walked by him.

Stunned for a moment, Johnny stood there frozen.

“Why? What was even the point of this if we were just going to go back empty-handed” He thought.

He watched Edward being escorted back to his car defeated.

“We were looking for his son, right? His own flesh and blood. Why would he give up this easily?” He thought.

“What happened inside that building?” His thoughts continued.

Breaking free from his confused state, as if his body was acting on its own, Johnny pushed past the members of Mad Dogs blocking the entrance to the Student Union and launched himself inside.

“Deshawn!” Johnny cried out.

Immediately, once Johnny was inside of the Student Union the door closed behind him and the engine of a car followed by loud screeching as it drove away with Edward inside.

“Deshawn where are you!” Johnny shouted, paying no mind to his surroundings.

Johnny wondered to himself why does he care so much about another person’s child when it has nothing to do with him. He then remembered the expression of the old woman with her family at the bodega.

“Deshawn come out!” Johnny demanded once more.

As Johnny ran through the entire Student Union to look for Deshawn, more and more armed Mad Dogs flooded inside blocking all the exits. Finally, Johnny watched as Deshawn left one of the rooms at the end of the hall and chased after him.

“Deshawn!” Johnny shouted.

Just before he could reach Deshawn, several of the Mad Dogs tackled and restrained him on the grounds as they waited for Deshawn to somberly walk toward them.

Deshawn stood in front of Johnny, purposefully placing his dirty boots within licking distance of Johnny.

“Why are you still here? Didn’t the old man tell you to go home?” Deshawn asked with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“What happened when you two talked?! Why would he all of a sudden abandon the son that we spent all day looking for?!” Johnny questioned while trying to fight free from his restraints.

“Lift him up,” Deshawn instructed the members of the gang.

“You’re not even the leader! Trayvon is! Why are they listening to you like lost pups?!” Johnny questioned.

“A lot has changed in the three years you’ve been gone dumbass.” Deshawn smugly explained.

“Trayvon’s dead. He was taken out by your former gang.” He continued.

“And as for your friend’s son. Do you want to guess who that was?” He continued.

“What?” Johnny questioned.

“The person you two have been chasing around called Clark was Trayvon’s real name,” Deshawn explained.

“That doesn’t make sense!” Johnny shouted pointing out the obvious difference in skin color.

“Trayvon was his real son, the same way he called you his son,” Deshawn responded.

“He was his first student, in other words, Trayvon was your older brother.” Deshawn continued.
