Control With Fear

Control With Fear

The tense atmosphere surrounded Far Rockaway and Brooklyn as the Street Kings were preparing to go to war against The Mad Dogs. Parents wouldn’t allow their children to go outside during the night and immediately after school, they were escorted back home to ensure their safety.

“Far Rockaway police department, is this an emergency?” The phone operator said asked.

“In three days, something bad is going to happen in Brooklyn.” A mysterious male voice said in a whisper.

“Sir? Could you speak up? I can’t hear you properly.” The phone operator inquired.

“Listen. Please. Something horrible is going to happen in Brooklyn hundreds of people are going to be killed.” The man said afraid to raise his voice in case someone may hear him.

“Sir, what is your address? We’ll send someone to come pick you up then you can go into a deeper explanation.” The phone operator said after finally understanding the man.

“I can’t do that. If they found out I snitched they’re going to kill me.” The man cried.

“Who is going to kill you, sir?! Please just tell me where you are located, and you’ll be taken to safety.” The phone operator insists.

“Oh God please help me they’re coming towards me.” The man spoke with a shaken voice.

“What you doin' over there Carlos?” Another man’s voice inquired.

“Nothing. None of your business, Santiago. Just leave me be.” Carlos demanded.

Over the phone, the phone operator heard a glass break followed by a loud thud.

“Sir!” The phone operator shouted.

Santiago picked up the phone and placed it to his ear.

“Who this?” The man asked.

“I’m part of the New York police department.” The phone operator responded.

As Santiago hung up the phone there was a faint click in the background and a loud bang after the phone had already been hung up.

Meanwhile, Johnny and Axel are with a large group of people hanging out in front of the corner store. Axel shot dice and Johnny lurked in the background to make sure no one cheated. In the middle of their entertainment, a man in his early fifties with long gray hair that matched his pale white skin, wearing a bright green tracksuit to match his yellow sandals, walked through the middle of their group to get into the store.

“Pardon me,” The man said.

“Yo, you interrupted our game, Grandpa!” One of the men from the group shouted.

The older man apologized but that didn’t seem to calm down the outspoken member of the group.

“I was winning! You owe me one-hundred grand, old man! The man from the group continued to shout getting more and more belligerent in his actions.

Having had enough of the man’s shouting, the older man turned to face the belligerent man.

“You shouldn’t be gambling anyway, it’s illegal.” The older man explained.

“We weren’t gambling, just having a little bit of fun,” Axel interjected.

“It’s because of that attitude that people like you are seen the way you are.” The older man retorted.

“People like us?! What’s that supposed to mean, puta?!” The belligerent man shouted as he stood nose to nose in front of the old man.

“The people that live here are afraid of criminals like you that choose to form these silly little gangs and start harassing people, extorting them for money and calling it goodwill, then when they don’t pay you turn them into another Oscar Smith.” The old man lectured not standing down from the belligerent man.

Having had enough of the old man talking, the belligerent man balled his hand into a fist and swung at the old man. Before the punch could connect, the old man blew towards the belligerent man’s direction causing the man to stumble and trip as the old man stepped to the side.

“Don’t let this geezer make a fool outta us!” Axel commanded the group causing them to surround the elder man. Everyone, except for Johnny surrounded the man and began to push him around in the middle of the circle.

The old man took a deep breath and held it in. Suddenly he became immovable from the center. Whenever someone tried to push him, it was as if they were pushing against a wall then when the belligerent man started to punch him again his knuckles began to bruise to the point they bled, however, the old man wasn’t hurt. All Johnny could do was watch in bewilderment as one elderly man stood up to the pack of wolves, he called his family without throwing a single punch.

What the elderly man said was correct, no one would dare call the police on the Street Kings due to how much they were feared in Far Rockaway. So, the fight continued with the elderly man never throwing a punch and lasted until the Street Kings got tired several hours later. By the end of the fight, the elderly man was never hurt, but everyone else, except for Johnny was covered in sweat and gasping for air. Once the fight was over and everyone in the group fell to the ground from exhaustion, the elder man turned back around and went into the store as he had first intended to do.

Axel struggled to get the words out. “Wh- What the fuck was that?”

Embarrassed by the whole ordeal, the group collected all their things and began heading home for the night.
