Chapter twenty; A shimmer of hope dawns upon.

Chapter twenty; A shimmer of hope dawns upon.

Thus, a fight broke out.

The spider first charged itself towards my position.

As it approached, I performed a longer distance roll by boosting myself by bending my legs down and launching myself like a spring, evading the mother's assault just seconds before she could have hit me.

Usually, I never tend to make such large distance rolls. Especially since they have longer recovery time in comparison with normal rolls. But since the beast size was much bulkier. Such role can save me from impending attacks.

The spider, knew well she missed. Broke off her acceleration as she proceeded to turn around and attack me using her many arms and fangs.

One downside I had. It was the beast's vulnerable spot which was its head. Attacking it would certainly cause some damage but with its many arms and fangs prevents me from approaching her head at any chance. No to mention the acid.

Therefore, I was shortened to a game of patience and positional one.

The beast first performed a slam attack with her whole front legs at me. I immediately evade back using a backward roll to safety.

The beast didn’t stop, as soon as I recovered. She attempted to attack me with her right front leg.

Predicting the attack, I rolled to her right as she followed with another attack using her left leg. Creating this X shape with her legs.

I planned for this already when I second rolled to her left earlier ago.

Taking this opportunity of her exposed head. I rolled ahead. Avoiding her left attack and began to attack its head with multiple strikes.

Her head was thick as a brick wall but enough to leave wounds on her skin. Especially her eyes, which was my main goal.

The beast screamed in pain as she proceeded to bite me with her mighty fangs.

Seeing how the situation went. I decided to roll back to safety and regain my momentum.

Speaking of her eyes. Back in that tight room when I second encountered her. Her eyes were burning as a result of the arrow stained with orange juice I fired at. But now just before I attacked her head. Her eyes seemed to go back normal like it was never been damaged before. Until now.

(Could she have healed?)

The beast then shook her head as a reflex maneuver to distract the pain. She tilted her legs down along with her body, then launched herself with a mighty unnerving jump as she slammed down the floor. Shaking the whole Environment.

I expected such attack, for that case I also boosted myself and jumped as far as I can. However, the effect was too strong and I was still knocked down on the ground.

Trying to recover back, the beast once again launched itself and slammed once again. I didn't have time to even think about how to avoid it. I was again knocked down backward on the floor.

Thankfully, the beast was far away from me, giving me a chance to get back up again. And for some reason, it didn’t attack me. Rather, it was eating one of the cocoon eggs that just fell from the ceiling.

It didn’t take a while for the spider to finish its meal. She quickly threw away the egg remains with her legs. And preceded to fight back for the second round.

(So that’s her secret, huh?)

She once again charged. But this time, she used her back legs to promote her speed and her front raised upward, waiting for the proper moment to slam down.

Given my position being just behind one wall of the dome cavern. I was cornered down. With nowhere to go, I advanced myself towards her accelerating position.

She was about to slam down not a few inches between us as I launched myself ahead with a strong leap. Avoiding her front spot to her back.

She seemed to have her front arms stuck on the ground. Trying as hard as she can to pull them back. I took this moment after I recovered back to strike against her bloated abdomen. Which for physiologic reasons, managed to curve wounds stronger than her head. But not nearly as strong as her eyes per se. After which the beats managed to pull back and followed ahead with the same jumping slam attack.

Knowing well she would perform this. I ran back to one of the walls of the dome carven and performed an advanced wall jump, using the cracked piton in the walls to assist me to run, for a short distance. Then amidst made a jump while rolling backward, avoiding the beast slam attack for good.

One of the many cocoon's eggs fell down as she proceeded to heal from them again.

(How the tables have turned......)

I noticed along the fallen cocoons; that some Stalactite sharp pillars were falling along with them.

Given the shape and design of these rocks, they can be used as some sort of penetrating spear tool.

“Right.....” I muttered as I planned my next move.

I sheathed my blades and approached one of the fallen stalactites. Not too close to it as the spider just finished healing and was brought back to the battle. She was about to make another charge again, like the first time she used at the beginning of battel.

I decided to stick it near the wall. Baiting the spider to my trap.

The creature advanced towards my position. I remained patient until I evaded the proper moment.

Only a few steps away from the charging beast, I rolled to the right where the Stalactite fell down as the spider rashly hit herself against the wall, rendering her dizzy.

Taking this advantage, I summoned my full strength to carry the Stalactite which wasn’t all heavy but for such yet adolescent body. But likewise, I ignored the pain and carried the Stalactite, wielding like a spear.

I took a heavy breath and then shouted a war cry as I charged the Stalactite towards the yet confused spider's abdomen.

Thrusting the Stalactite, the beast roared screams of agony and pain as she started to twirl and move around like a disabled struggling to resist the pain.

Meanwhile, I evaded backward away from the chaotic commotion.

The beast suddenly came to a stop as it fell on its sidewise, breathing heavily with the Stalactite now gone, at least by its half. It must be resting after suffering such heavy injury.

However, I took this moment to unsheathe my blade and the dagger again. Activating my skill unquenchable desire to strike the beast's weak spot by furiously and skillfully slashing and penetrating fluidly without being troubled by the beast's attacks.

The bleed grew stronger as I continued to hit with the spider growing louder with each strike I landed.

I can't help but feel extremely alive along this entire dungeon. Fighting dangerous creatures while running low on equipment and tools to fight fairly. It wasn’t feeling a sense of duty or slavery to fight. But something I wanted to distract myself with.

Blood stains down my swords and clothes. I wasn’t some paladin, nor a criminal. I was just a demon, hungry and thirsty for battle. With a vengeful mind. Like a man who lost every sense of his humanity until nothing remains but the primitive version.

(Yet... I felt thrilled and alive. As I did every battle.)

Whether it was a dungeon animal, a demon, or even a dragon. I am willing to kill them all until someone can finish me for good.

After a second of beating down the helpless spider, the spider suddenly got back up as she had it with the constant blows on her abdomen.

The creature then turned around as I rolled back and screamed in anger. She preceded to perform a frenzy combo. Slamming down her legs and swings in different directions aimlessly. As if she was blind and hoped to strike by accident.

As I was rolling backward away from her. The crystal flickered as I heard a series of Stalactite and cocoon eggs falling down on top of me.

I successfully evaded it, but this distraction cost in being pushed aside with brute force by the spider. Slamming back to the walls. Sustaining heavy concussion damage.

I fell down on the ground on my knees, coughing blood while breathing heavily as I struggled to resist the pain.

(Fuck! I don’t have any healing potion to recover back!)

The spider meanwhile. Rested for a bit as she was trying to perform another attack. This time extending her head down as if she was trying to get something out of her esophagus.

She was about to spit acid!

Ignoring the pain like always, I started to run sidewise as she fired up acid balls toward my position.

Missing them all, the beast roared as she slowly approached my position.

She first attacked with her right two front legs. Instead of rolling back, I lunged myself forward as I noticed her left two legs were slightly raised up, expecting me to roll to my left.

As neared her head. She was about to bite me. But I lunged myself with a slide beneath the beast chelicerae. Then stabbed her lung cover which was situated at the junction between her chest and abdomen.

It wasn’t a major injury, but enough for the spider to stagger for a split second. Taking this advantage to make another slice at the spider's back right coaxes of spider with my sword.

The beast then fell on her right for another second. Once again, rolling my body to her left to strike her left coaxes.

However, I failed to notice the spider bending as she made a titanic jump to the back.

As a result, I fruitless failed to get back on my feet and got knocked out by her earthquake-like slam. Sending my flying weakened body into the air as I fell face down.

“Godd.....dammit!” I cursed in anger, harrowing to recover back.

The beast then roared what looks a mighty roared as waves emitted from her mouth. It didn’t seem to have any effect on her or myself except the cocoons falling down. As I assumed much.

Although, I could hear crunching sounds and tapping around the environment.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Reinforcement had arrived.... my fear came to actualization. As flying spiders and normal ones started to appear from the many small burrows throughout the walls. Crawling around the walls and floors as they circled around their mother in protection. They were at least a hundred!

“Heh....” I chuckled. “The hell if I am going to die by a cheap bug!”

I took a heavy breath and then held my blade, preparing to confront this unfair battle with everything I had.

Still, is this a way to die? By mere bugs? After everything had happened.... is this a way to truly die?

Do you call it a noble sacrifice? Or a fool's death?

So much had happened and so much I have overcome to reach such a point. Yet, here I am... about to be a meal for these predators.

(I am an animal myself. This is how nature works....)

It's not like I expected death at all. Just a bit disappointed it was a quick one. But I have always welcomed it...

As I held my blade two-handed, preparing for this suicidal battle. The mobs began to charge, thirsting in hunger and feast

However, just then. The cavern floor suddenly broke down as a rain of rubble fell down on the company, followed by none other than the warcry of a Titan.

“HERE I COME BUGGLINGS!” The Titan shouted in excitement alongside Okami who was beside him while falling. “CAVALRY IS HERE!

As the Titan finally crashed down, the aerial squads advanced stepped aside from the gravel fall, and rotated towards me.

Ignoring what had just happened, I pulled my crossbow to fire at them. But they were crushed down by the Titan's hammer who threw it like a boomerang to the cavern walls. Shaking it down with the spiders falling down.

While was distracted, two larger spiders approached me. They were killed by the Titan who slapped them to oblivion.

Just then, Okami approached closer and brought back my pocket bag.

“Sounds like you needed help lad!” The Titan spoke, with a charming smile as he approached.

“Didn't you try to kill me earlier?!”

“Man! I just wanted some action!” He chuckled as he raised her arm and summoned the hammer back. “It's been a while since i had this fun!”

Just then, the brood mother climbed over the mountain of rubble as she screamed and echoed through the cavern to summon more of her children.

The Titan and i took battel stance with my back to his, while Okami stood in between.

“Do you want to run or...?” Titan asked with a smug face.

“Like hell I will!” I shouted back as I wore the bag pocket again while drinking a healing potion. “I am not going anywhere until this bitch dies!”

“Then what's your plan?”

“Take care of the mobs! You hammer will take care of them good!”

“And wolfi and you?”

“Okami will provide support for both of us!” as I glanced back to the mother. “I will deal with the queen myself.”

“Ha! This brings some sense of nostalgia......”

Not paying attention to his words, I activated unquenchable desire with my eyes glowing lustful red.

The mother roared again after finishing her child meal. Healing back as she took her gaze on us.

(Phase two!)

*

The Titan charged ahead towards incoming mops, slaying them off with ease one by one using his Godlike Hammer that squashed each to pieces and pool.

I took this opportunity to pass by him and advanced the mother spider, alongside Okami.

There were a few mobs on the way, so Okami took care of them by advancing first and taking care of their attention and drawing them away.

The Mother spider raised her head, looking like she was about to spit something. Not of acid but rather a new move.

She fired an orb of tangled web toward me. Anticipating the attack, I evaded to the left while making a slash attack to strike the incoming spider through its head.

“AH BITCH!” The Titan shouted back as he became entangled with the webs.

Unable to free himself and soon to be attained by her children I pulled the crossbow and fired my last firebolt at the web in order to free him.

Suddenly, the crystal flickered with an upcoming threat.

Sensing the spider’s footsteps, I retreated back only to evade her fetal, venomous bits in the last second.

Just then, Okami engaged in a plunge towards her head, infusing herself in flames and in return, the mother as well.

Okami attempted another strike. Unfortunately, she managed to block it using her arms. Covering her face from every possible attack. But her right arm was caught in fire (Author note’s; Trichobothria). Suffering a bit of damage as a result.

Instinctively as I approached closer to the beast position. I felt a familiar aura of mana spurned from within, such as every time I performed a unique weapon art.

The spider was unable to see due to her arms blocking the view. In addition, her arms were set on fire. She had to withdraw as she followed with a melee attack. A cross-leg sweep, crossing its two short front legs and sweeping outwards.

I quickly lunged at her using Somersault Smashing assault, where I leaped my body in the air forward like a ball while spinning my blade along my movement in a vertical plane while dodging her sweep midair.

Slicing two of her eyes at the first combo, I finished by plunging my sword right into her head. As a reflex, the creature lunged head upward, preventing me from thrusting another.

Instead of thrusting the sword deeper, I started to shake sidewise, trying to cause as much damage as I could while injuring her eyes.

The beast started to shake frenzy much like earlier when she performed that unblockable combo around the room haphazardly.

I planned this much so I could bait her to kill her children unintentionally.

“OI OI!” The Titian, taking note of this mess, retreated back as much as he could away from the beast so he wouldn't get caught in her frenzy combo. “STIR THAT SHIT AWAY FROM US MATE!”

After a few seconds of breakdown and enough injuries inflicted around her head. The beast suddenly decided to charge to a nearby wall. Hoping to cast off me.

I was planning to run off however, my sword was now trapped inside her head. Unable to pull it back.

Knowing well any effort to it pull it back was going to be NO of use. I planned to jump off the beast's head as she was the second way from hitting the wall.

Thankfully, I was saved by the same Titan who held me with this hand and then threw me off away from the spider’s collision force.

As I landed safely on the ground. I noticed cocoons and stalagmites falling down to the ground.

“Titain!” I shouted out loud to the still bats cloud. “PICK THE STALAGMITE AND THROW IT AT ITS BACK!”

Without question, the Titan rushed toward one of the nearest stalagmites. Carried it with ease and threw it off at the recovering spider as she turned around back to the battle.

Instead of striking her back, he injured her front right abdominal side.

Once again, she bleared in pain. Spinning and waddling around the cavern as she lost her neuronal control over her body. In addition, her balance. Then landed down sidewise as she breathed heavily, still in pain.

The mobs were still hovering around. But they were easily dealt with by the Titain and Okami working together.

I meanwhile, charged towards her position without delay.

Armed and not, i didn't want to waste any chance to strike against her weak spot. I first retrieved my dagger who until now, was stuck in her lung book lung earlier.

Instead of pulling it back, I drifted the dagger all the way from her lungs to the end of her anus. Carrying this long cut on her abdomen.

Free finally, I stood behind her back as she was recovering back on her feet's. But with extreme difficulty.

Knowing well she was going a slam attack then heal using one of the cocoons or her children.

I rushed to do a wall climb just to her left. Given she was close to the walls. Then jumped as I held her left front arm well.

I chose this arm specifically given how it was the first to be strike by the Okami’s flames earlier, thus sustaining most damage.

Then using the dagger to multiply stab the patellar region between her femur and tibia. Each success hit further damages the joint space.

Meanwhile, the spider tried to throw me off as she raised her leg up and down. Trying everything she got to cast me down. But it was unsuccessful as kept holding strong enough to her arm while same time counting to stab the joint space.

I eventually managed to sever the remains of the leg away from the femur region. As we both fell down to the ground.

The spider as a result of losing one of her limbs and I simply cut her leg down.

I fell on my back, now breathing heavily as a result of severe exhaustion.

But still, the battel was far from over. I just need a little more effort to give and finish this beast off. Even with Titain and Okami’s help, they can easily finish the spider off. I was determined to finish this on my own hands. Because if I don’t, I will never achieve my desire.

Aside from hearing the crushes by the Titain’s hands against the helpless children. I heard heavy growling sounds nearby. In addition, feeling a burning sensation against my lower leg.

Opening my eyes after resting a bit, I witnessed the same mother spider just a few heads close to me as she was about to bite and feast on her dinner. Taking advantage of my break.

I instinctively pulled a flashbang potion and struck it against the floor as it produced a sunlight-blinding effect around the room. The creature shouted as a sun-like effect still blinded her and caused dizziness, Pushing her away for a short distance.

“AH!” The Titan shouted in pain.

“OGAMI!” I shouted. “Faiasutōmu! Ima!”

A firestorm, similar to the one we used against the Titan Earlier began to spiral around the weakened mother. Shrouding her in flames and fear.

Taking this opportunity to get back on my feet. I held the creature's severed arm which was in comparison to the stalagmite. Was much lighter.

Raking this weakened advantage. I Pulled myself back for a moment, then charged with full strength as I activated unquenchable desire, one final time toward her head. Thrusting the sharp-end spider arm as much as I can.

The spider is not able to see anything. Screamed in pain ever so loudly as she failed to flex her head away or even move around. Meaning I must have injured her brain finally with blood spilling all across the floor and against me. Now showered completely.

I left the arm still pierced to her head. However, she was going frenzy as she twitched and convulsed, preventing me from getting closer.

“INFINITY SLAYER!” The Titan called out as he rushed towards me. “GET READY! I AM SENDING YOU UP!”

I nodded, knowing well what he meant.

Just as he got closer, he slammed his leg to the ground, trembling with fissures as I was sent up high as a result of the impact, and quickly landed on the spider's head.

After I successfully pulled the sword out, then charged to once again stab the blade to the top of her abdomen where her major blood vessels are nested and drifted the sword much like I did earlier with the dagger. Gashing a wound as I ran all the way to her back with a fountain of blood spilling as I climbed her back.

Reaching the other side of her body, I fell down on my knees on the ground as the spider finally ceased to silence as she fell on the ground. Announcing in defeat and death.

” An advisory was slain”

----------------------------------------

After the battle had ended, I dropped the sword on the ground as I fell on my knees. Breathing heavily while tremoring, as a result of the excessive strain my muscles contracted over this whole fight.

Even for such demonic power I possess. I was still restricted by my human limits with the mana flow running through.

I must have consumed a large amount of mana as result of using unquenchable desire many times, three times to be exact in less than ten minutes.

Hell, I might have used even more if it weren't for the Titan to save my ass last second. And that would have been the end of me.

“Dammit!..” I cursed at myself. Regretful over-dependence once again rather than using my skills alone to defeat the spider.

I might have had a chance If I didn’t lose my bag earlier. But that would be still considered as a reliant.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

I got back on my feet after resting a bit, still bitter over this battel. Given how many tools I have wasted over an accidental encounter.

I turned around the spider’s rotten corpse while noticing the remaining children ran back to their burrows, fearful of what remained for their live and hoping to find a new queen. Whenever that might take.

Looking around, I noticed the Titan was scrubbing his eyes in pain. I might guess the potion I used earlier played a role in blinding him as well.

He approached the spider and said sorely with relief;

“Quite the mess we got ourselves in” He spoke with a carefree tone. “You ought to be-”

The Titan was interrupted as soon as he recovered his sight. Seeing my sword-held one-handed directed at him alongside Okami who was growling in anger.

I said quietly;

“Give me a reason why I shouldn't continue where we left off....”

“Ha!” The Titan slapped his belly. “Come on lad! We all need sometimes some exciting battels! And one of your kind is a rare occasio-’

“I won't ask again!” I replied with a furious tone. “Give me a reason why I shouldn't kill you here and now old man....”

The Titan suddenly shifted his behavior into a more deliberate one. He took a moment to think it over as he rubbed his beard. Then said cheerfully;

“You don't often see Infinity Slayers reasonable...” He gave a Solem smile as he continued. “Most of what's left are either mad or dead...”

Whether he was pulling a trap or truly acting in kindness. I couldn’t fathom either. In such a world, you never know who is on your side and who is not. Especially around this era, a game of kill or be killed. and trust is a very mischievous word used by others to further develop their game. Only in the end to betray you in the worst way.

I am not speaking as an experience of my own. Simply, an opinion I have had in mind for so long.

Back in the old world, I never trusted anyone, not even myself. I used them as mere tools to benefit my position.

I have always had this negative energy towards everyone in my school. Spending alone so much time, I unconsciously built this kind of barrier to cast everyone out. Till eventually harboring such philosophical view over youth as nothing more of a temporary distraction for the callow to play with until they realize the horrible truth of what trust really means.

It's like a toxin, slowly building up in your system until one day, it bursts out and starts killing you from the inside.

I have seen this act of injustice and cruelty. By experiencing them and watching them as they unfold into a frenzy.

I may not have been in their shoes, but I know for certain it hurts like hell. And of all, I know every kind of pain there this world to give.

You really can't trust anyone in this universe. But it is a toxin much like hate. You build yourself on others to help you and make your day less unbearable. However, it is also known as a temporary event.

Eventually, you will be on your own to depend. And whether you are ready or not, the end can be as terrifying as it can get. Loneliness and the unrepeated cycle of death and rebirth. With only the memory of the beautiful past to hunt you.

Therefore, I pushed everyone away. Pulling excuses such as not wanting to be involved in other people's manners which I have no interest in. But the truth is, I never wanted to be hurt more than I have already experienced.

The truth is, I have always wanted company. And I realized that just now. After a mountain of regret weighing against my shoulders. That I had a chance, and I threw it away.

So why not fix it in this world? The answer is simple.

If the whole world is a fake existence, what's there left to trust?

It only further proved my point...

“Oi!” The Titan called out. Bringing me back to reality. “You dead?!”

“Half dead...” I replied with a deadpan tone. “Either way, your answer is still unconvinced.”

“Yeah, I reckon....” He rubbed his beard again. “You aren't.... that old yet.... you sound young too.”

I sheathed my blade back and began to walk the other way.

“If there is nothing but small talk you want. I am uninterested...”

“I could make it interesting....”

“Sure, let me guess.” i turned around and said sarcastically; “You are going to take me to your lair and rest there until I am ready to venture back to the woods?”

“Wow!” The Titan was impressed as he whispered to himself. “We are that obvious or is it just me?!”

“Seriously......”

“I MEAN!” He was flustered. “SURE! THAT IS WHAT I WANTED. HAHA!”

“Ehh....” i sighed with annoyance.

Okami sounded disappointed.

”Oh! I know!” raised his finger in revelation. “You are new to these lands, aren't you?”

“What makes you say that?”

“Very well.” He nodded then proposed. “I take it you are new to this place. Normally, visitors are here for two main reasons; either they are crazy to die and the other. I am assuming you aren't for both. Especially with the republic covering the plateau from the plateau south of the forest...”

He took a breath and continued “Finally, given where I found your back bag. I am guessing you a runway from everything that had happened to the west.”

(Dame.... he is smarter than he looks!)

Titians are often known to be dense heads and dumb in nature. Aside from their godly strength, they aren't superior in intelligence.

I assumed much the same for this Titan like the rest. But who can say why does everyone know something makes it right?

I fell into that trap of my own accord. He is obliviously playing dumb to catch me off guard.

“Those are some heavy interpretations you assumed,” I said amusingly. But knowing well he read through me like a book.

“Of course, you could be just a visitor who is just lost. But since you are who you appear to be and the looks of you, I am guessing you are here for a reason.”

“Whatever the reason may be. I still yet to understand my presence has to do with anything with your so-called proposal.”

I knew too well what he was going to offer.

“The republic is bound to come here eventually and inspect the area. Normally, they don’t come here, given how extremely dangerous and troublesome this forest is for the soldiers and even the adventures to cross. However, there is a chance they will come here and survey the forest for any hollowed one threat. But now that you have cleared a portion of the many threats in this forest. Their chances are rising even higher than before. And if they find you, well.... who knows what happens next.”

He has a point. Even if I were to stay in this forest for safety reasons which by now, went down by no means safety anymore with unruly creatures of the forest. The republic is bound to come here eventually and they might just catch me unless I escape the forest. Given my current state, I am in no shape to speed run the forest.

My options are limited even further now.

“But this is where we- i mean I come in.” He approached a little closer as he gripped to the strip of his pocket bag. “I can provide you with rest, equipment and information until you are prepared to venture back to the outside world. Especially since you might need to repair your Equipements and... wash yourself.”

Due to this battel and the earlier ones. I have wasted a lot of bullets for my crossbow and the armor plates sustained damage. Suiting them unworthy of protection purpose anymore. And finally, the stench of blood of my fallen enemies now bathed with, clouded from inhaling other odors which can be troubling.

(And yeah.... I do smell bad, it's disgusting.)

“And the catch?” I asked.

“Killing monsters for me...” He gave a cheeky smirk. “You like that don't you?”

“So, become your slave in exchange... what? Food and home?”

“I know! I know!” The Titan gestured with his hands to stop. “You Infinity Slayers in no need for food, sleep...”

“You fairly know a lot about the Infinity Slayers?” I asked suspiciously. “Even though their last traces are gone and according to what you said, all went mad. What's up with that?”

“Well....” He scrubbed his head in idiocy. “I knew some... a long time ago...”

“Is that so...” I asked curiosity. “Then Knowledge.”

“Ha?”

“I want knowledge about the Infinity Order and in return, I might help... your people....” I said with aversion.

“Ahh....” He nodded in question. “I can work with that. I would like to have a conversation with an infinity slayer again.”

“Before that, you have to answer but one question.”

“If I can, I will.” he prepared himself.

“What's the infinity Slayer code?”

The Titan took a sigh and said confidently;

“Giveth thy soul and humanity to hell. To ever reacheth yond one selfish desire at all did cost. But one Thou art break thy chains of captivity of demon hood. one must thou’est experience true death. Either by someone stronger who isn't can defeat thee, or killeth yourself ere thee turn into one of those folks” said none other than Ebony Archimage.”

“Then you are going to tell me everything you know about the infinity order,” I answered as soon he finished the line confirming my suspicions.

“By all means sir infinity slayer.”

I am taking a huge risk as I was about to agree to his proposal. Even with everything he said, this is no confirmation of his words to indeed help me out. He could be just luring me out of his trap with kindness.

A lie can sometimes tell you much more than the truth. There is only one truth, but countless possible lies to replace it. So, which story the liar chooses exactly for you may tell you a lot about this person and his attitude towards you and others. Therefore, don't immediately confront a person if you suspect them of lying, play along, let the whole thing unfold, and see what you can learn.

That was the only way to know if he was being truthful or not.

I unsheathed my blade and took a breath of relief.

“I will take on your deal Titan.”

“Call me Uthane.” He smiled.

“Pride of the Titans” I chuckled” Call me Umbra....”

I don’t know why. But it seems for a moment I felt a sense of relief of company, even if it’s with an inhuman. Over the last couple of months, including this one. Were the most talkative I have been in a long time. Which to be honest, at some point did provide a temporary comfort. To utter a word after being silent for so long. But also, it's not like I was desperate. I didn’t mind the silence.

Like I said, it's only a temporary relief. Not an answer to your solutions. After suffering so much, experiencing much of nightmares, and learning the horrible truth of reality. It was too late then.

No matter how much talk can be therapeutic to me. I am already too deeply pulled into this void. No words of comfort, joy, or pleasantry can replace my memories.

But on one side, this has been the most truthful I have ever been. At least half of it...

“Before we go on ahead, I have to do something quick and i need your help,” Uthane said.

----------------------------------------

After the battle had ended, We finally made it outside. This was possible with Uthane’s help.

Surprisingly, he held me and Okami then launched himself with a long jump to the surface.

This Titan has more than what he appears to be. Maybe I am really lucky the fight earlier didn't last longer. Otherwise, I would have been easily killed.

We emerged from the dense forest into a clearing nestled close to the base of a looming mountain hill. Here, we found ourselves surrounded by the graceful tendrils of weeping willows, their branches cascading toward a once beautiful pond, now showing signs of neglect. In contrast to the murky swamps we had traversed, this area seemed strangely pristine—a fact that piqued my curiosity. It dawned on me that this serene spot served as the perfect location for Uthane's hideout; after all, one wouldn't want unwanted creatures lurking too close.

Circling the tranquil pond, we made our way toward the rugged face of the mountain, its walls blanketed in thick layers of swamp moss.

As Okami and I followed Uthane's determined stride, I paused to ponder his direction. It wasn't long before my gaze fell upon a massive stone plate nestled against the mountain's base, cleverly concealed by the moss and the overhanging branches of the willows. The natural camouflage made it nearly imperceptible amidst the landscape, a testament to Uthane's cunning.

I was captivated by the view, for a moment wanting to spend an eternity just listening to the melody of night forest creatures.

“Like the view?” Uthane willingly asked.

“It's certainly not bad,” I answered after being brought back to reality. “Anyway, how much longer?”

“Take it easy! I am one who is carrying shit on his back while you walk shoulder free!” Uthane said with enmity as he kept on carrying the large chunk of chopped wooden logs.

“You asked me for help......”

“I don't recall you being all juvenile mate!”

“I don't even know where we are heading...” I said indecently.

“Trust me, lad!” He chuckled. “It's not like I am going to hide you somewhere and take your kidneys then sell them on black-market!”

“........"

“Ah...” He gave a disappointed look. “So, you think my jokes aren't funny too...”

“And they have a good reason why they think of that.”

“Naro doesn't think that!”

“Who?!”

“AHM! NOBDOY!” He gave a deceptive look.

(I take it back; he is really dumb...)

On the way, Okami and I took the liberty to deal with the swamp's creatures. Uthane asked for help since the monsters could break his wooden logs, further delaying his mission.

Among these creatures are what are called Infested species ranging from simple humans who became ghouls to large and mythical creatures such as ogres. Mosquitos, spiders, and giant leeches are among the annoying categories. Generally, they are easy to deal with. Except the Infested ogres who are quite tanky in compression. And it would prove more difficult if they all attack as one large horde.

Thankfully, Uthane still helped when the situation went dire but other than that. The journey was smooth but disgusting.

“By the way. I have been meaning to ask. “After we finished another Horde where Okami took care of the majority by burning them alive. “What is the deal with that wolf?!”

“What do you mean?” I asked with a dumbfounded tone.

“The Fire lad! And everything, including how she acts!” Uthane kept talking about her as if he was enlightened. “Is she some kind of a primeval beast?”

“I don't know....”

“What do you mean you don't know?!” He said with a crestfallen look.

“What else do you know about primeval beasts besides being blessed by their Maiden?”

“ahmmm.... nothing?”

“There is your answer then...”

“Eh....” He gave a messy look, clearly bothered by my statement. “Smart ass.”

“Maybe if you start talking about the Infinity Slayers i might hint something or mo-”

“Stop!” Uthane suddenly halted.

Okami growled as she began to examine the surrounding area.

I paused at the same moment he spoke, noticing the same dreadful smell i knew before as the forest became thicken and covered in white fog, nearly concealing our presence.

“They are here....” Uthane said with an earnest look. Similar to the one i encountered when we battled at the end.

“The Hollowed ones are already here...” i continued.

“Bastards move faster than Sand fucking worms!”

“Come on.” I waved back. “It's this way...”

Uthane dropped the wooden logs aside for a moment and together scouted the zone for any Hollowed ones.

Walking between the trees through the thick bushes, we eventually reached the source of the stench.

A once-majestic oak, towering in grandeur, now stood as a hollowed shell of its former self. Its roots, once vibrant and teeming with life, now lay bare and lifeless, stripped of their verdant splendor. Like a specter of death, the tree stood colorless and pale, its once-lush canopy now barren and desolate.

From the gnarled wounds of the oak, a sinister black ooze oozed forth, a vile testament to the corruption that had taken root within. Its tendrils snaked through the forest like sinister veins, weaving a dark tapestry amidst the foliage.

The very air seemed heavy with foreboding as the once-thriving woodland now bore witness to this creeping decay. In the eerie silence, the forest whispered tales of its demise, a mournful lament for the life that once flourished within its depths.

What's worse, the Tree became something from a horror textbook. Human physiology is substituted for plant biology. Aside from the tree trunk, now it is supported by multiple vertebral columns, woven together by tendons and muscles that coat a wooden layer. As one goes higher, the trunk will split repeatedly until there is a single vertebral column supporting the rest of the structure. At the base of the trunk are multiple human moths and eyes which gave a sense of awareness around it. The roots themselves are esophagi, protected by a layer of cartilage reminiscent of the trachea. At the end of each root is a fully formed hand with the palm nested in an upper and lower jaw, complete with muscles, lips, and a prehensile tongue. The tongue seems to be used as a digging implement and as a snare for food, ranging from burrowing animals to edible fungi and plants. All of these roots ultimately lead to what i assume its the abdomen. This is supported by the solid waste is eliminated through a sphincteric orifice on the side of the trunk. No roots are found in the area immediately beneath this spot.

The branches, as initial observations suggested, are human arms. They extrude themselves from the bony trunk but have no bark themselves. Some will split at the elbow so that they may have two or even three forearms. The palms of its hands all face upward and the tip of each finger has a human eye growing from it. The iris of each eye is hazel. Dissection of the eyes shows that they are all myopic, though they do react to light stimuli as a normal eye would.

“I am going to vomit....” Uthane said with a disgusted look. “Never have i seen something so horrible as this and this isn't the first time.”

“Hollowed Seed....”

“That's what you call them?” he asked with a curious tone.

“Yes...” i took a moment to inspect. “Ōgami. Dekireba tane o sagashi ni itte kudasai”

Okami shook its head as it went scouting between the bushes.

“So, it understands kanji...” Uthane said inspiringly.

“A hollowed seed as it the name suggests, is a root of this tree. Taking down this seed will kill the tree in return. Think of it like its heart.”

“Don't tell me you dissected this shit...”

“Actually, I found its weakness in luck,” I answered back. “The twist is the seed isn't inside the tree or under it, or above it. It's actually somewhere tossed around the zone of the tree. Most occasionally, burrowed little underground. Not too deep but not too far from the tree. Around the oak zone basically. “

“Ohhhhh......” Uthane rubbed his beard. “That explains why they kept coming back after i chopped them. “

“They do this intentionally to trick you into thinking you cut the source. Only the real source survived and once again spread its roots. “

“What about the human parts? Is there any proper explanation?”

“To be honest.... i have no idea...”

Those branches are in my opinion are eldrich origin rather than Hollowed. While they speak volumes of pure nightmare and horror. It's the asymmetry it represents that confuses me.

Ever since i became acquainted more with the Hollowed ones. I began to question their form of intelligence. While they are monsters by all means. The way they act, trick and strategize are no different from humans. And choosing such forms to cloud their enemies in fear and terror is rather a conscious move.

Eldrich ones know no mercy and have no consciousness, at least from what i can understand. but the Hollowed ones represent everything other than that.

Okami has finally returned, met with failure.

“Seems like the seed is somewhere there. Prepare yourself for another-”

“Hold on! Hold on!” Uthane put his massive hands on my back.

“What?!”

“Let's go back to base for now.” He spoke with a calming tone.

“You are crazy?!” I spoke with detest. “Every second you waste is a second away for the Hollowed ones to take more lives!”

“Huh? Never took you someone who cares for human life?” Uthane chuckled.

“.....!” I grinned in anger and looked away.

“Anyway, we aren't going to leave this tree fuck alone. We will come back to it.” Uthane said as he retreated back.

“Why delay it!? For all we know the Hollowed ones could hear us and plan its next trap.”

“Ay, but i have a better plan!”

----------------------------------------

We eventually left the Hollowed Tree temporarily and sought out his hideout.

Thought i didn't understand why he chose to delay this fight sooner. I can reason there is more to his plan than meets the eye. Perhaps he might want to call for some help.

Naturally, the two of us are quite enough to destroy this root. I did it alone when i was in the west. But my guts tells me otherwise.

Uthane is strong and there is no debate on that. But the fact he still wanted my help to beat this tree and assumingly more on the way. Proves that we might come against something dangerous. His aura spoke volume of the upcoming threat, radiating red like crimson flowers. He is stressed about it. Therefore, i decided to play along for now.

“We are here!”

With a decisive sweep, Uthane cast aside the wooden logs blocking our path and strode purposefully toward the stone plate.

Bracing himself, he extended his arms, his hands poised to grasp the edges of the ancient slab. With a determined effort, he exerted force against the immovable stone, gradually inching it out of its resting place.

As the plate shifted, a cascade of rubble tumbled from its borders, filling the air with a symphony of crumbling earth. With each dislodged stone, the veil of secrecy began to lift, unveiling the shadowy depths of an ancient temple concealed within.

“Come here lad!”

I made my way towards him, only for him to suddenly withdrawal away from the stone plate as it trundled down against me.

Out of instinct, i activated unquenchable desire and blocked the upcoming plate.

The weight was unimaginable, it was hard for me to believe i could resist this titanic force. I nearly slipped away as every second pass with my footling sliding away and my hand trembling more and more.

“YOU BASTARD!” I shouted back. “What the fuck are you doing?!”

“Relaxxxx!” Uthane laughed off as he went back to carry the wooden logs and make his way to the temple. “Just a test of strength! What harm could that do?”

Meanwhile, Okami made her way into the temple. Scouring and sniffing for any presence.

“Tasuketekurete arigatō! Little shit!” I cursed quietly.

Uthane eventually returned back and helped the plate instead of me.

“You can relax now...” he chuckled.

I released myself and made my way in. Taking a heavy breath as I recollected myself.

How come the crystal didn't warn me this time?! I might become more dependent on it. Or rather, it doesn't recognize Uthane as a threat. Therefore, it took it easy.

The gate eventually closed, covering us in eternal darkness beneath the temple as the winds echoed through the cracked fissures between the walls and roofs. Speaking melody of the old days.

Thought the sight was impossible to see. The soul gaze and the footsteps were enough to guide for me to wander in the dark.

“Just follow my voice!” Uthane Shouted cited through the dark corridors. “And you won't get lost.”

“What is this place?” I asked curiously.

“A temple devoted to Alya’s. Or once were...” A hint of disappointment can be noted through his lines. “Stood once high and mightily, now buried below alongside its history.”

“How far?”

“Very deep...” Uthane crackled. “What you are about to see does not count as one percent of the temple.”

I read somewhere that such dungeons and temples are ruins of the old world. I assume they were intentionally buried by the perfect church and the demons.

Legends spoke of meteorites falling from the haven and crushing down the spires down to the ground as it became the basis of the mountains they hold and sour.

These ruins go so far deep that one would get lost in the abyss alone and die out of madness. In fact, there was a book i read when i was young about a wanderer who roamed the depth of the old world and the simplest way i can shorten his tale is; megalophobia.

This piqued my interest for some time. The old runes were described as an ending maze and more importantly as foreign. It started as something akin to the republic architecture slowly evolved to White Legion like design and finally; something that cannot be termed with simple words. The world Eldrich was mentioned.

Now that i recall it; my hollow heart is strayed with curiosity to investigate his depth. My mind is already long gone and mad, whatever it may reveal will not break me so easily like those fools.

Whatever they might be, it isn't pretty i am sure of it. But it just shows you how vast and large their empire was. Only to tumble down in few days. Makes me wonder how long it will be before the Hollowed ones reach this place and spread their dominion.

What are they waiting for? What's their end goal?

"Right here!” Uthane calm aura settled down. “Down this narrow pathway for humans to walk is your way. You will find it eventually.”

“What about you?”

“I will be behind you! Just got to find a place to hide these lodges.”

“Alright....see you on the other side.”

“Take care!”

Okami and I ventured forth, navigating through the impossibly narrow fissure wedged between towering walls.

The passage twisted at an oblique angle, challenging our progress, particularly with the weight of the greatsword pressing against my back.

Despite the arduous journey, the pathway mercifully proved brief, leading us to emerge into yet another dimly lit hallway. However, a glimmer of light beckoned not far ahead—a colossal gate, its imposing frame allowing slivers of daylight to pierce through the darkness.

With determination, Okami dashed towards the gateway, her pace urging me to follow suit.

"Are those... voices?" I pondered aloud, my senses pricking at the unexpected sound.

Squeezing through the narrow opening, my vision sharpened, revealing the first signs of life I had encountered in what felt like an eternity.

----------------------------------------

Nestled within the ancient temple, the stronghold manifested itself as a grandiose yet compact corridor. From my vantage point, the gate loomed enigmatic, flanked by a sprawling bifurcated staircase. Its steps converged on a short walkway spanning an arched bridge, gracefully supported by sturdy pillars that plunged into the depths where a tranquil fountain gently cascaded.

The base of the stronghold terminated at the bridge's end, opening into a vast chamber that splintered into three pathways, beckoning adventurers deeper into its recesses, akin to the gaping maw of a cavern.

As for the denizens of this enigmatic realm, to call them a crowd would be an overstatement; they could be counted on one hand. A smattering of children frolicked at the heart of the arena, engaging in a spirited game of what appeared to be football—three young children imbuing the space with their youthful energy. Meanwhile, a handful of adults meticulously packed crates, their movements purposeful as they disappeared into the labyrinthine depths of the temple.

A worth note; there were all demi-humans. That explains a lot.

Upon closer inspection, the temple's walls were buttressed by inverted pillars, as if the very foundation clung to the ceiling, a testament to a forceful rending asunder. Indeed, the architecture defied convention; instead of soaring vaulted ceilings, a simple, flat expanse greeted the eye, resembling any mundane floor.

At the corridor's terminus, a gate mirrored the one I had traversed, albeit in a topsy-turvy fashion, dangling overhead like a tantalizing enigma, inviting further exploration into the mysteries of the stronghold.

“I know....” Uthane suddenly appeared behind me. “Its fucked up as it you may think...”

“Is this temple... upside down?” I asked shockingly.

“I don't know honestly...” Uthane showed a concern.

“I assume this is.... one of its many secrets... right?”

“Ay...” He nodded then quickly shifted his somber mood. “But let's not bother ourselves with this now! Follow me...”

As we trailed Uthane's footsteps deeper into the temple's depths, I couldn't help but pause to study the intricate design of the pillars that lined our path. Yet, amidst the awe-inspiring architecture, something sent a shiver down my spine.

At the apex of each pillar, a chilling sight greeted me—a manganous depiction of a smiling man, their visage frozen in an unsettling grin. What struck me most was the eerie detail: half of each face was ominously missing, as though a blade had sliced through the stone with precise intent, leaving a haunting void where features should have been.

“Umbra!” Uthane called me in anger. “Come on lad! What are you staring at?!”

“The....” I trembled. “The pillar... they are...”

“I know i know! Its upside down!” Uthane took a heavy sigh. “We will talk about this more later! Now come on!”

“Right....”

(Hold on! Can he not see them?!)

Neither Okami is affected by the sight.

(Am i going mad? No.... something is off... i have to come back to it later....)

We eventually reached the center of hub where we were welcomed by the three children.

“Uncle Uthane!” One of the three kids, the boy with fox ears (Also called Reynard) rushed towards us.

“Well, hello hello there little munchkins!” Uthane gave a cheerful smile.

“How was the adventure?! Did you find something cool!” The girl with rabbit ears asked in curiosity.

“Did you kill monsters and beasts on your way!” The tenacious girl with what looks horn bearing out behind her ears asked.

“Hahahahah” Uthane slapped his belly. “Sort of. Uncle Uthane fought out these spiders! Big disgusting spiders!”

“Ewwwww” The girl with rabbit ears revolted.

“Oh right!!” The other girl and the boy grew excited.

“But i wouldn't have done it without this fella.” Uthane turned around and pointed back at me.

(Shit.....)

“Wowww!” The girl with dragon horns gazed in amazement. “He looks so cool!”

“What a cute wolf!!” the girl with rabbit ears began to caress for Okami who seemed to enjoy it.

“I want to touch it!” The other two gazed their attention away from me and to Okami out of so-called “Cuteness”.

“Hehe” Uthane chuckled. “It's getting more attention than you are.’

“Fine by me....” i took a heavy sigh of relief.

The term "demi-humans" has been commonly misunderstood. In essence, it encompasses all beings that are not strictly human; they could be considered as a form of demon. However, within this category, there exists a diverse array of subspecies, much like the myriad kingdoms found within the realms of bacteria or insects.

Among these, we find the Ursus, embodying the essence of bears, the Lupco, resembling wolves, and the Canine, akin to dogs. Then there are the coneys, akin to rabbits, and the Foxian and the Felin. Most notably, we have the Wyvrens and dragons, distinguished by their horned features beside their ears.

These creatures are deemed unique due to their dwindling numbers, a legacy of their ancient ancestry tracing back to the age of dragons. Regrettably, they have faced relentless persecution, condemned as heretics by the fanatical Maiden's children, and mercilessly hunted down by the zealous Assayer church. Despite their efforts to forge peaceful treaties, discrimination remains rampant, and they continue to endure the burden of unjust prejudice.

Yet, amidst the pervasive hostility, there exists a beacon of resilience—a draconic girl, her smile radiant with unwavering bliss, defying the unjust stigma imposed upon her from birth. In her, we witness the indomitable spirit that refuses to be shackled by the chains of prejudice.

I envy that spirit...

“Alright kids! Best you all leave now! We have a business to do!”

“Ahhhhh...”

Okami moaned in sadness as soon as the kids stopped playing with her.

“Don't worry... you have got plenty of time to-”

“Hey Uthane!” Two adult demi-humans, one bearded a fox ear and the second an almost fully hyena.

“Hey, you two! Brought the wooden logs just as you asked. Also, make sure to-"

Beside me, Okami moaned.

"I am not doing that." I said coldly. "if you want, you can stay here as long as you want."

Okami growled in anger.

“Thanks!” The hyena said blissfully. “Is that the new guard you told us about?!”

“Huh?” I looked back at Uthane in question.

“AHM YES!” Uthane shouted out loud. “He will help us! He is a strong man and kind!”

“Excuse me?!”

“No time to talk! We gotta go!” Uthane pushed by my back towards the deeper ends of the base.

“Wait! Hey! We still want to carry the-"

“I am sure you can pal! See you!” Uthane waved back stressfully.

----------------------------------------

"What the hell Uthane?!"

"Relax! Relax! It's all part of the plan!"

"A plan you haven't told me yet about!" I said angrily.

"Just be patient! i promise I will pay you!"

As we ventured deeper into the temple's labyrinthine passages, lanterns adorned the cave walls, casting flickering shadows that danced and swayed, bringing a semblance of life to the otherwise dark and dreary dungeon. These caverns, with their natural arches, appeared almost as if they had been sculpted by nature itself, their depths stretching endlessly into the unknown.

Amidst the echoing sounds of our footsteps, a cacophony of activity reverberated through the tunnels. Demi-humans toiled tirelessly, their figures illuminated by the soft glow of lantern light. From stacking crates to tending to cooking fires, they worked with a sense of purpose, yet their numbers remained sparse, lending an air of desolation to the bustling scene.

Amidst this symphony of life, a bittersweet realization washed over me—I had almost forgotten what it felt like to be surrounded by the vibrant pulse of a living society. It had been nearly six months since I last encountered such bustling activity, lost as I was in the somber dealings of the dead.

As I gazed upon the demi-humans, their ceaseless labor a stark reminder of the world beyond the shadows, a sense of unease gnawed at my conscience. This was not my place, I reminded myself; I was but a ghost haunting the fringes of the living, cursed with a fate worse than death itself. The longer I lingered here, the greater the risk I posed to these unwitting souls, mere livestock in the eyes of fate.

As we proceeded, the corridor opened up into a hollowed segment of the temple, where a grand staircase beckoned us upward toward what appeared to be a significant chamber.

(Perhaps his boss awaits?)

"Alright... just leave the talking to me. You only speak when spoken to," Uthane instructed, his tone laced with authority.

I nodded in silent acquiescence, refraining from uttering a word out of sheer irritation.

"And whatever you do, don't mention that you're an Infinity Slayer... for their own safety," he added, his expression grave with warning.

Approaching the imposing door, the muffled sounds of activity emanating from within hinted at a bustling gathering.

Without hesitation, Uthane swung open the door and strode confidently into the room.

"My apologies for the delay everyone!"

"Mr Uthane! pleased to see again!"

"Finally you are back..."

"Uthane.... welcome back."

"Made a new acquaintance along the way!" he announced, his voice echoing through the chamber. "Meet Umbra."
