5 - Golems

Gavin was breathing heavy. The battle had been fairly short but intense. The slower units were now about to reach them which included two rock golems and one that looked to be made of metal. He thought they were golems anyway and looked similar even though they were made out of different materials. They were just blocky, vaguely humanoid looking constructs that reached to the mechs waist. “Try not to let any of them hit us, especially not the metal looking one. The Talon is damaged enough the way it is.” She replied, gripping the controls tightly. Gavin wiped the sweat off his forehead and started walking the mech to the side. He didn’t want to get in a slugging match with them and he wasn’t sure how smart they were yet.

They seemed fixated on the carriage and ignored the mech so Gavin used that to his advantage. He came at the nearest one from the side and when they were in range, the girl drove the claw through what looked like its head. The golem hesitated for a brief moment, then turned to face them, throwing a punch. Gavin was ready however, and kicked it away from them which almost caused the mech to tip over too but Gavin managed to recover. The golem toppled over backwards, unable to connect with its punch. He had a feeling they would need to do more than just decapitate it. Attacking their buddy seemed to trigger the other two and they forgot about the carriage and turned to face the mech. The metal one charged them while the other circled, trying to get behind them. They were unfortunately smarter than Gavin liked.

He tried to back up and dodge the metal golem but he wasn’t successful. The girl had to use the claws to fend it off by grappling with it. She locked the claws on its arms to immobilize it but it was struggling to get free which was shaking the mech. In the meantime the other golem was moving to their rear and the one he had knocked over was getting up again. Things were not going well. They had to find a way to destroy or disable them. Then he had an idea. “Can you lift it off the ground?” He typed. She glanced down at the message while struggling with the controls. “I think so, but not very high. This thing is heavy.” She replied while slowly lifting the struggling creature up. When Gavin deemed it was high enough he rotated the torso 180 degrees, which swung the metal golem around and smashed it into the rock golem that was getting ready to punch them in the back. The girl let go of the metal golem as it hit the rock golem and it went flying right through the rock golem, which blew apart. He didn’t think it would be getting up again. The metal golem bounced a few times but looked relatively undamaged.

The remaining rock golem was now on its feet but was more wary of the mech. It seemed to not want to fight until its metal counterpart was back on its feet, but Gavin had other plans. He charged it and this time the girl hit its chest, punching through to the other side. The rock golem shattered to pieces. Two down and one to go. He wasn’t sure if the claws could punch through the metal golem though. However, it seemed their potential new friends wanted to get in on the action after the mech had reduced the enemy. The wolf riders started circling the metal golem and then somehow managed to trip it. One of them then jumped on top of it and did something that Gavin couldn’t make out. He didn’t know if they were using magic or magical weapons but it seemed the golem was being frozen in place. Its limbs and head were then cut off. He was impressed and took note so that didn’t happen to the mech. They left the wolf riders to their work and walked back to the carriage.
