10 - Understanding

While he slept, Ivy designated the Talon’s injured leg as the top priority to be fixed. Gavin didn’t know she could do that so was intrigued. The limp was now much less pronounced and most importantly, there were no screeching noises as they walked. He decided to keep heading toward the lake since he had no other destination in mind. Gavin was concentrating on maneuvering the mech when a sound made him look behind him.

The injured girl was standing there, leaning on the other girl for support. She was looking around curiously. “Oh, I’m glad you’re feeling better. My name is Gavin and this is Ivy.” He said, smiling. “My name isn’t Ivy, it’s Lieutenant Ivers.” Ivy corrected him grumpily. “Sorry, Lieutenant Ivers. She won’t tell me her first name yet so I gave her a nickname.” Gavin continued, still smiling. Ivy grunted and ignored him.

The girl said something but he couldn’t understand her. “Sorry, we can’t understand you yet but you should be able to understand us. I know it’s weird but it shouldn’t be too long before we can start speaking this world’s language or so I’ve been told. I guess it helps if you keep talking to us as well.” Gavin explained. The girl tilted her head and looked confused. “We are heading toward a lake so just try and make yourself comfortable. When we get there we can hopefully get out and stretch our legs.” He continued.

Gavin was surprised when the girl came over and sat down next to his seat. Her companion seemed surprised as well and started saying something in a loud voice. They talked back and forth until finally the girl sat down on the other side of his seat. He didn’t know what was going on but it felt a little strange to have two beauties sitting next to him. Gavin hadn’t had a girlfriend since high school so was a little rusty when it came to dealing with women. Ivy turned around and glared at him for some reason then whipped her head back around in a huff. He just scratched his head and kept the mech moving.

It took longer than he thought but they finally came out of the forest at the edge of the lake. It was much larger in person and Gavin could barely see to the other side even in the tall mech. He was more than ready to get out of the stuffy cockpit and stretch his stiff body. He climbed out of his seat and then helped the girl stand up. Her arm hadn’t grown back but he could see new skin covering the wound.

She smiled at him but soon the other girl came over and got between them with a frown on her face. Gavin just shrugged and walked to the airlock with the girls following him. It seemed like Ivy was going to stay in the cockpit for now. He cycled the airlock and they all squeezed together on the small platform. The injured girl didn’t seem to mind but the other girl still had a frown on her face. Gavin lowered them to the ground and walked toward the water.

The injured girl stared back up at the Talon in amazement. Gavin remembered she had been unconscious so this was the first time seeing what the mech really looked like. He could relate as he found it impressive as well. Even now it was hard to wrap his head around the fact he was in a different world and able to pilot an actual mech. The girls walked around the mech while he stretched then walked along the shore.

Gavin didn’t see any signs of people living around the lake. It would be nice to make it back to civilization or whatever passed for it in this world. He walked back to the mech and laid down on the grass. He was still tired and soon fell asleep. Gavin woke up hungry and thirsty but refreshed at least. He sat up and for some reason both girls were laying next to him asleep. He didn’t think he was that popular.

He got up and the injured girl yawned and opened her eyes. “Good morning.” He said smiling, but then realized he had spoken a different language. The AI must have finished teaching him in his dreams but he thought it would take longer. He hypothesized that since the girl had nanites as well they were able to learn the language faster through her, but he could be wrong. “You can speak our language now?” The girl asked, confused. “Ah, yes it seems so and I can also understand you now.” Gavin said grinning. This would make things much easier being able to communicate properly.
