17 - Unleashed

They definitely succeeded in getting the enemies attention. More and more units started appearing. Alexis told him to start moving away from the town so Gavin complied. Ivy traded shots with them and was doing a good job of keeping the enemy at a distance. Gavin was getting tired of the constant fighting. He wasn’t a soldier and would rather just explore this new world.

He put that out of his mind to concentrate on not dying. Alexis gave him some more orders which he didn’t mind following. She was the expert after all. They had drawn most of the enemy away from the town at this point by attacking and retreating a few times. Next Ivy fired smoke rounds into the middle of the enemy like Alexis wanted. It seemed Margaret had told her about the mech’s first battle and she wanted to see a repeat.

Once the smoke had obscured the enemy formation, it was time to unleash the Talon. Gavin charged into the smoke while Ivy fired off the lasers. He crushed enemies under the mech’s feet while Ivy swung the claws around, causing more chaos and destruction. It was always nice to be able to see while your enemy was blind. Unfortunately they were now running low on smoke rounds so wouldn’t be able to repeat it a third time.

Soon the enemy had enough and started retreating. Ivy sent them on their way with a few more laser blasts. The mech had taken a few more hits but seemed to have weathered the fighting relatively well. Alexis and Margaret cheered while the enemy retreated and the remains of her army chased them for a short time before returning to the mech. The smoke was dissipating but some still swirled around the mech’s legs. Gavin guessed it probably made for quite the sight.

Alexis and Margaret went to greet the troops while Gavin stayed with Ivy. He sighed heavily, hoping this would be the last battle for a while. “We’ve been in a few life or death situations now, are you ready to tell me your first name yet? Gavin asked, looking at Ivy. “I’ll think about it.” She said, not looking at him. “I’m tired of battles. I’m not cut out to be a soldier. Did you see many battles in your world?” He asked, stretching his tired arms.

”No, I was just a test pilot.” Ivy said softly. Gavin really wished he knew more about the girl but it was like pulling teeth getting anything out of her. He didn’t know if it was just her personality or if the death of her copilot traumatized her. “If you ever need to talk about anything, I’m here. We are in this together after all.” Gavin said, climbing out of the seat. Ivy ignored him so he was silent for a while.

”Um, do you mind if I use the restroom?” Gavin asked, bouncing from one leg to the other. Ivy stayed silent but pressed the button to open the door. “Thanks!” Gavin exclaimed, rushing to relieve himself. When he came out, she was still in her seat. He swore she was glued to it. Gavin walked over to see what she was doing. It looked like she was assigning the repair priorities and monitoring the retreating enemy,

”Is there anything I can do to help?” Gavin asked. “You can get me a water and ration bar if you like.” She replied, opening up the bunk/storage room. “Sure. Why is there only one bed when there are two pilots?” Gavin asked, grabbing the requested items. He grabbed some for himself as well. “We are supposed to sleep in shifts so someone is at the controls at all times.” Ivy replied tersely. “I see, that makes sense. I don’t mind taking shifts. I don’t want you to wear yourself out.” Gavin said taking a drink. “Thanks.” She replied, finally turning to look at him.
