21 - Capital

Traveling to the capital was tedious. At first the view was interesting as they moved from grasslands to swamps to rocky terrain to forests but he was ready for civilization. He was also tired of sitting in the cockpit seat for hours on end. The mech’s limp was completely gone now but the ride wasn’t as smooth as a car.

Alexis and Margaret took turns on the cot while they traveled and camped outside when they stopped for the night. Gavin could tell the girls were getting tired of the constant traveling also. He was glad they came along to smooth their passage through the various towns. Each time they would need to calm the scared villagers.

As the towns started getting bigger, more traffic appeared on the roads. The travelers avoided the mech and made sure to keep their distance. Gavin was glad since it meant they didn’t get in his way and slow him down. Finally they could see the high walls of the capital in the distance. Word of their arrival had preceded them and a group of mounted soldiers was approaching them from the city.

Gavin stopped the mech and waited for the group to come to them. When they got closer, Alexis and Margaret went out to talk with them. Gavin was tired and just wanted to hurry to the city but understood that Alexis had to clear the way. He idly wondered if the gate was even big enough for the mech or if they would be forced to keep the Talon outside.

The girls returned and directed them to follow the soldiers. The wagons and people on the road got out of the way and stared in awe at the mech as it went past. As they got closer Gavin was surprised at the size of the city wall and giant gate. It did look like they would be able to pass through with room to spare.

The guards at the gate looked up at the mech in wonder and even saluted as they passed through. Gavin was surprised to see a second wall and gate after they went through the first gate. Instead of continuing on to the second gate, they were directed along the inner wall. Guards on top of the wall pointed and waved at them as they walked.

They soon reached another gate and followed the soldiers through. It looked like a military compound as they entered. There were barracks and open training grounds with soldiers practicing their formations. Gavin maneuvered the mech and parked it near one of the open areas.

From their height, he could look out over the sprawling city with mostly one and two story wooden buildings. The buildings were a rainbow of different colors which made the city scape really seem fantasy like. There was even a large castle in the center of the city which must house the royalty.

A fancy looking carriage was waiting for them when they arrived. Lucy reluctantly locked the Talon down and went with them to the carriage. It was the first time she had left the mech and she looked a little nervous. Gavin reassured her that they would be all right. He just hoped he was right. It wasn’t like they had much of a choice anyway but Alexis and the kingdom’s people seemed nice enough so far.

Once again they were met by a mixture of different races and all of them were cute girls in fancy clothing. What was it with this world and cute girls? Alexis ignored the girls who were bowing servants and ushered them into the carriage. Both he and Lucy wore sidearms just in case. Gavin was more used to a hunting rifle than a pistol but he wasn’t a complete novice. He fervently hoped they wouldn’t be needed.
