4 - Decision

From what Gavin could see, it appeared they had two choices. They could either help save the people being chased or help stop the people being chased. The damaged mech wouldn’t let them escape and they had to do something. He wished he could talk to the girl, they really needed to work together. Then he had an idea. Gavin realized since he could understand the writing, he should be able to write a message to her over the display. He quickly found what he was looking for in the display settings and started typing. He decided to say it out loud as well to help the AI translate. “Do we help them or capture them? I always root for the underdog, so think we should help.” He sent the message and the girl looked down as her screen beeped at her. She looked back at him in surprise then back at the zoomed in projection. “I guess it doesn’t really matter since we don’t know anything about what is going on. Without more information, anything we do will be a gamble.” She said shrugging.

”Great. So if I’m reading this right, this thing has smoke grenade launchers that still work. Can we fire them between the two sides?” Chuck typed next. She read the message and looked back at him again. “We can, but then what? That won’t stop them for long.” The girl replied. “Then I guess we get the carriage behind us in the confusion and see if we can lure their pursuers in closer. The claws seemed to do a fair amount of damage.” Gavin continued typing. “You want to engage in melee combat? We can try, but I’m not sure you are up for it yet.” The girl said after reading his message. “We’ll just have to manage. This things sensors can see through the smoke right? That’ll give us an advantage.” He typed furiously. “Of course they do. Ok, we’ll try your plan since I can’t think of anything better.” She said then fiddled with the controls and Gavin heard a series of popping noises. Canisters flew out toward the battle from the mechs shoulders, which caused the wolf riders to jerk in shock. They still couldn’t communicate with them so Gavin just bowed the mech in their direction and then started limping toward the carriage.

The canisters landed perfectly behind the carriage guards and thick, dark smoke began billowing out. The pursuing attackers were quickly enveloped in the smoke. The girl adjusted the screen which now filtered out the smoke so they could perfectly see their new enemy. Gavin whistled in appreciation which caused the girl to give him a weird look. He was expecting to see a black and white picture like thermal imaging so was impressed what the technology could do. The wolf riders followed the limping mech. They seemed concerned until the smoke started pouring out and then understood we were going to help. The carriage reached us and came to a stop at the mechs feet. The attackers were still confused by the smoke but they would break out at any time. The advantage would be lost so Gavin strode past the carriage and into the smoke screen.

They encountered a group of the raptor riders first which were scattered by the mechs clawed arms. Two larger armored wagons were next in line and Gavin stepped on one of them, crushing it. A claw knocked the other on its side. The enemy couldn’t see and had no idea what was going on. Some fired magic spells and arrows but none found their mark. A large four legged reptile with armored plates covering its body ran past them while they were busy with other targets. The girl swung an arm around and fired off what looked like a metal spear trailing a cable. The spear sank deep into the reptiles side, which caused it to howl in pain and rear up. The mech jerked to the side as the beast was yanked to a sudden halt as the cable tightened. Gavin turned the mech around and crushed it with a foot while the girl reeled the spear back in again. They had gotten most of the attackers by the time the wind blew the majority of the smoke away. The mech stood silently amid the carnage, with blood dripping from its claws and feet.
