144. Closer to Endgame Part 5

That only leaves… the Twin Moons. How am I going to deal with them? If we fire him publicly and out his ties to the Twin Moons as a result, even they won’t take him. But, we’ll lose our ties to them altogether. We won’t be able to use them anymore. Though how useful were they to begin with?

Tom considers the organization of the Twin Moons. They have done some interesting things in the past and continued to do their own thing for the most part even after the guards started providing funding and weapons to them. They would only ever kill demihumans after all.

Their successful terrorist attacks weren’t suicide bombings, they were more simple murders of demihuman men and women, sometimes involving ritual mutilation and rape a few times, usually at night. Every so often they’d carry out the occasional mass lynching, sometimes with children. Some of the worse stuff was just swept under the rug when it could be.

The Baron didn’t listen to complaints by demihumans either so the Twin Moons was never, ever targeted by any guard precincts.

They were basically harmless to humans. They didn’t target humanity, the nobility, commoners, or other human supremacists, often going out of their way not to. Yet, today if he is understanding this correctly, they must have been responsible for killing and burning those human supremacists.

Obviously, they’re a terrorist organization, they’ll cross any line as soon as they meet some kind of pushback. Hm. Pushback… Did someone interfere with them outside of our notice? No. Forget it, it’s still unacceptable what they did.

Tom doesn’t feel right about people like him, his wife or his family being killed so senselessly. They’re humans, they don’t deserve that kind of treatment. He decides to do something drastic. It is quite a shame, but he can only choose to cut all ties with the Twin Moons, disavow them completely, and capture them using whatever information his sergeant can offer.

I’ll bring those psychopaths to the Baron’s feet, he’ll be way likelier to provide a commendation or something instead of restructuring the precinct. He should know how politics in his city work. I doubt he wants to shake things up so much that his people start losing trust in him…

Now that he has made his decision, all Tom needs to do now is make the sergeant reveal all known members of the Twin Moons and their bases. He can then get rid of the sergeant as a restructuring effort and then raid the bases. The Baron can do what he wants with the idiots and losers they end up capturing.

I honestly thought they were more competent than this. Truly a shame.

Of course, he cannot ever reveal his sergeant’s connection to the organization. Though it isn’t rare for the guards to use vigilantes, private militias or terror groups as tools, making it known that such practices are done would embarrass the Baron. There is the off chance that his crimes would be made an example of.

“Alright, Yin, I think your idea is a good one. Let’s first bring him into the station. I need to interrogate him and force him to give us information on their current Twin Moon bases. Then we’ll get rid of him, hopefully encourage him to move to another city, and then raid the bases all at once.”

“Ah, yes! Good thinking, sir! I think getting rid of them while also pinning the fire bombing on them will tie up the loose ends.”

“Hah, you put two and two together, huh…”

Tom had not told Yin about how he recruited the sergeant to call out the Twin Moons and make them create a sufficient distraction to capture the old draconid. Still, Yin isn’t a fool, he easily saw through his trusted superior’s schemes. Though, such a plan seems almost cute considering how they both witnessed a battle between two heroic nobles today.

Tom doesn’t fear that Yin, his loyal lieutenant, will talk. He decides to wrap up this discussion.

“Forget that for now. We’ll continue this discussion later.”

Tom notices three armored guards entering the alleyway. They are his other sergeants. From this alleyway, Tom and Yin will be controlling the operation.

The guards have a system that they can use to direct the guards into action. It is a magically powered signal network that transmits what is essentially an Federation standard Morse code from a commanding node to all others in the network.

With the commanding node, the captain can direct the operation and make the undercovers act when needed without giving out obvious signals. The commanding node can also receive short reports from receiver nodes every so often.

With his sergeants here right now, he can deliver some instructions to them before the operation starts. He places his helmet back on.

“Men, I know that today has not gone in our favor. Consider it my fault, but we’ll discuss all that later. I am going to try to make amends. Right now, we have an opportunity to deal with a menace to the Baron. We have heard from our undercovers that he goes by ‘Barden’. You know… that old fucking draconid.”

The men laugh at his comment about someone they all find extremely annoying. He could have just been quiet but instead he’s been yelling and yammering all day long. He knowingly provoked an action from them. Honestly, the stupidity of demihumans knows no limits.

“We will have much to discuss about the future of this precinct by the time we’re done here. Any questions before I go through the plan again?”

One of Tom’s subordinates, a man named Hither, decides to ask about something he’s been dealing with today. The fire bombing. They don’t have much news on how it happened, but they’ve received a lot of questions. Unlike Yin, the three sergeants are not in the loop about Tom’s plans to advance himself.

However, Tom had already ordered most of his men to deal with the fire and the burn victims only after Barden was captured. While he didn’t like that so many of the victims were human supremacists, he made the choice to put off that issue when he still thought he needed the Twin Moons.

Hither continues, knowing this. He has to learn what happened for himself just as much as for anyone who asked him. He relays his experience dealing with a victim.

“One of the healers had told me about how he tried to heal an unconscious man’s belly and found that his liver had been cooked like it was burnt meat. The man doesn’t have the skill to heal such injuries. I won’t lie, sir, I was moved by his tears. There are several other victims facing similar issues. I wanted to know if there was anything we could tell them about—“

Before Hither can continue, he notices a woman walking into the alleyway. Her pace is slow yet steady, and she honestly looks uncertain.

She’s wearing a head covering, and a yellow dress.
