We only got a few minutes of rest before they tried to ram the door open again. During the first try, the door momentarily opened enough to be able to see the attackers. The description that Steve gave us didn't give them enough credit for how grotesque they looked.
Pink shriveled skin with some hairs here and there were only one of the things that made them unpleasant to look at. Combined with their long snout and barely noticeable eyes, it truly looked terrifying. But what made it really scary were their claws. The claws that are normally used to dig were soaked in blood. Normally the claws of a mole are only a few centimeters long, which is still surprisingly long since they themselves are only about 12-13 centimeters big. However, thanks to the increased size of these "moles" the claws are also way bigger.
If I were to guess their size I would say the moles would be 1 meter and 30 centimeters. The claws are probably around 30-40 centimeter.
Altogether, it was a sight that would send most normal straight into a panic, if encountered personally. This was something that quickly took effect.
"Hiieh!"
"W-what the fuck is that?!"
"Maurice, calm down! Maurice!"
Maurice was known in our class for being a scaredy cat. Since he didn't show any fear or panic until now I thought he would be somewhat okay, but just the mere sight of these things made him reel back. And he wasn't the only one who was influenced by their sight. Several others flinched or straight up had to look away. Others froze up once they saw the blood-soaked claws.
Meanwhile, the ones who were able to ignore what they saw desperately increased their efforts. After all, they weren't nice enough to let us deal with the frightened classmates first.
"Shit, this really isn't good."
If this keeps up it is only a matter of time before we are unable to hold out.
"Matthias, you got a plan?"
I asked, hoping that he would have at least an idea that would help.
"Does it look like I got one?"
He answered as he pushed his entire body against our makeshift barricade.
I was about to give Maurice a light slap, in the hope it would help him get his shit together, when I heard the sound of splintering wood.
"Ah c'mon, did they really have to that?"
The sound came from the door. The moles seemed to have decided that it would be easier to just use their claws to take the door apart instead of ramming it open.
"Shit, get away from the door!"
Matthias quickly decided to call everyone back. The gaps in the barricade are big enough for the moles to go through so anyone who would stay at the barricade would quickly get him or herself injured.
I helped Maurice get back on his feet when something suddenly pulled on my behind, no my tail. I turned around and saw, that my tail had been grabbed by one of the moles and it was pulling on it.
"I really don't have any luck."
I pushed Maurice away from me, just before I myself fell backward.
"Mark!"
Damn these moles. I quickly got on my knees and pulled hard with my tail, hopefully breaking it free. It didn't. The mole just fell over from losing his balance but he still held onto it.
"Damn let go!"
In my desperate attempts to break free, I didn't notice the second mole who approached me from the side.
When I did, I was already in its range. It raised its hand, or rather its equivalent of it and then lunged at me. I desperately tried to take a step back but was still unable to thanks to my tail.
"Mark!"
It hit me directly in the chest. I gasped before screaming out in pain. Its claws gave me 5 long cuts across my chest. One could even see that my ribs were damaged.

I screamed and screamed until I had no more air. Then I collapsed.

POV Gaia
Ah, this is really bad.
"Gaia, what is going on? How could you let a situation like this even occur?!"
"I didn't want something like this as well. You know very well that at the moment we can barely even contact the mortal realm. How do you expect me or anyone else to be able to stop this from happening?"
"This whole situation wouldn't have happened if you would have paid proper attention to the dragon veins. Accidentally letting one of them leak and not only driving all animals in the surroundings mad but also disturbing the magic formation that sealed these subterraneans. If you would have done your job then nothing would have happened. And look, they are slaughtering my children!"
"Sigh, it has already happened, so we really shouldn't be discussing how it happened, but how we can help them."
The god of light finally calmed himself. He really is a difficult one to work with.
"Nothing. There is nothing we can do. You just said so yourself."
Which is exactly the reason why discussing this is completely pointless, is what I would like to say but that wouldn't help one bit as well.
"Remember this Gaia, because I will."
He gave me a meaningful look before teleporting back to his own parts of the divine realm.
Sigh he sure likes to keep grudges. He nearly always complains when " his" humans die in some larger event. Didn' he also want to get revenge on the Goddes of water for that one time where and an entire armada of human ships sank thanks to a storm? Ah, anyways I should really help him, no her a bit.

3rd person POV
The scene in the classroom had already turned into something akin to a bloodbath. Several of the students were already lying in their own blood. Many of them unmoving.
The remaining few students who weren't injured or dead moled themselves up in the leftmost corner and held the moles at bay using the chairs and tables.
However, the situation wasn't good. Wooden chairs and tables could be sliced apart by the moles once they got in a proper strike.
"Ha-ahaha looks like we will die here."
"No! We will make it through this! Only a few more minutes until the police arrives."
"Look around. Do you really think we will survive?"
The situation truly looked like they would only be able to hold out for a minute or two. They were getting tired and more and more chairs and tables were getting destroyed.
Unbeknownst to them though, the situation was about to change.
One of the students lying on the floor, a little girl with long black hair and a white bone-like tail stirred. It was Mark
At first, she only twitched a bit but shortly after, she managed to raise her head. Mark simply stared ahead for a few seconds before her eyes seemed to lose all light. It was like any semblance intelligence left them.
Then, a noticeable change occurred. The skin of her arms and legs started to darken. Her nails grew longer and merged with her fingers and toes, slowly forming claws. Her arms started to become longer as well. Meanwhile, her hair clumped together in strands which then encased themselves in a coating of chitin-like material.
However, it didn't end there. After limbs and the hair finished transforming, Marks torso also transformed. Her back and sides underwent a transformation similar to that of her arms and legs. The skin transformed into a carapace that, once it was finished, was an armor of carapace plates that overlapped each other. After it seemed like her transformation had finished, white spikes shot up along her spine.
The students, as well as the moles, were oblivious to Marks extensive transformation. They were only made aware of it when the mole closest to her screamed inhumanly.
All the students and moles, who weren't expecting to get attacked, froze due to how sudden it was.
The moles quickly found out that one of them was the source of the scream. The tail of Mark had penetrated the Moles back and the tip of it came out of its stomach. Something that no one really paid attention to at the time was that no blood leaked fem the wound. However, they did notice that the big cuts on Marks' chest slowly healed.
The students were greatly confused. How did Mark survive that attack? How was she able to move at all? But the most confusing part was, what happened to her?
Meanwhile, the moles became enraged. This was supposed to be easy kills for them but now one of them had been greatly injured. Its survival chance was questionable.
However, Mark wasn't bothered by her surroundings. She couldn't be bothered as her mind at the moment was completely occupied by just a single thought.
'BLOOD! GIVE ME YOUR BLOOD! MORE MORE BLOOD!
She released a high pitched, blood-curdling scream full of bloodlust before getting into a crouching position.
The moles finally woke up from their stupor and immediately ran over to Mark. They were out for blood. But so was she.
Mark ignored the other 4 moles coming at her and jumped to the 5th-one who was still impaled by her tail. With her jump, she closed the distance of a little over 3m immediately.
The Mole moved to the side, ignoring the pain. It seemed like Mark would miss her jump.
Then, Mark used her tail to pull himself to the mole. Having corrected her trajectory she directly lands on the mole and plunges her claws in its body. The claws on her hands penetrated deep into its chest while the ones on her feet dug themselves into its hip.
Yet again, the mole released a horrific inhuman cry. However, now it could retaliate. It raised it's paws and tried to get Mark of of it but failed due to being unable to get past her carapace. Its long claws slid of of it and left scratches but were unable to grab her or injure her.
While the mole attacked her back Mark used his claws to make more and more cuts across its chest.
Moles weren't fast animals and these giant ones were no exception. So the other moles were still unable to get to help their friend when it fell and stopped moving.
Finally, Mark stood up and turns her body, glaring at the moles.
Only now did they notice that barely any blood came out of the wounds. It seemed like there was barely any blood left in its body.
When they focused on Mark again, everyone noticed that the cuts on her chest had already healed.
Her classmates were horrified and shocked by what just happened while the moles looked at her with anger.
She, however, only growled like an animal before crouching again.
The moles got ready and then... she leaped.
