11. Gaurdian

On a beautiful morning, just after the event of a big war, on the breeze of hope and the aroma of victory, on a simple tent awoke a very special man. His left hand tapped on a desk on his right; looking for a piece of necklace.

“Today… is the day…” He smiled staring at the necklace placed above his eyes. He raised his back and stretched it forward. The man jumped off his bed and went out of his tent.

“Good morning Morris!” Yelled one man.

“Morning to you too Zerpil!” Morris skipped happily outside. He arrived at a huge table where many soldiers sat along with their food. After a short picking for his food, Morris sat down with a huge smile on his face munching on his food.

“Your smile is creepy today… are you that happy we got back to this old city?” Asked Kurt, carrying his tray of food as he sat with Morris.

“Yep!” Morris kept on eating his food.

“Uhh… well, if you say so, at least your house back at Kales is safe, though renovation of Gela might be… I don’t know yet.” Kurt said.

“Hmm?” Morris was so happy about the day that he had completely forgotten about anything else. “Oh yeah… wait? What do you mean by that?” He asked.

“You know those nobles, the city is destroyed, based on past events, I don’t really think they would even dare to repopulate this city, so Kales might actually just become a stronghold,” Kurt replied.

On normal events, Morris would worry about his bad investment once more, but his mind was only filled by a single person, and not even his house or his entire wealth would be able to topple the giant passion in his heart. “Can’t really do anything about that.” He replied.

Kurt was flabbergasted at Morris’s reply. Morris stood up from the table and carefully took care of his plate. “Well, I have to go!” He yelled at Kurt. Morris ran straight outside of the city and into the forest. He had with himself his staff, his necklace worn, his naive brain, and his beating heart.

She said she would be back at her house. Morris passed through bushes, branches, animals, and mud, just to run back to a wooden hut in the middle of the forest.

With one last shove of a tree branch splashing his face, a wooden hut on a spacious small hill lay upon the sun’s direct sunlight. Even her house is favored by God… Morris thought. He walked to the front door and knocked with puppy eyes and a joyous smile.

“Zeala! Hello! I’m just here to visit.” He knocked more. No one answered behind the door, but there was an answer from behind.

“What is with you smiling like a child? For an old man, that’s kind of creepy you know, hahaha!” Morris turned his back to a beautiful maiden with blond hair covering her mouth with her left hand as she laughed.

She had a thin body, green eyes, smooth skin, a perfect nose, symmetrical eyes, an apt mouth, twin ears, colorful nails, silk-like hair, a spotless body, an angelic laugh, a captivating voice! She was perfect! That was all that was needed. It was like an angel that fell from the sky without anyone noticing. A beautiful lady living in the forest full of mystery, rid of her past, yet, her presence should never be questioned.

Hearing Zeala’s voice behind him had made his smile larger than it already was. “Are you that happy to see me?” She asked. “Yep!” Morris replied. Zeala scoffed and walked past Morris. “Come on in, it’s hot outside.” She said.

“So, have you eaten yet?” Zeala asked, laying down her basket full of mushrooms and other edible plants on the table. “Yep!” Morris answered.

Morris had been in Zeala’s home for more than a year at that point. Nothing had changed in the interior and it had felt like it was his home, just that he didn’t live there.

An unpolished wooden table, still patterned with bark placed in the middle of the house. A door at one of the walls, adjacent to the kitchen, beyond the table. Two pieces of long wooden chairs filled with holes that insects and worms had infested. A small hammock was placed opposite the right end of the door.

It was a tiny and lovely house. A compacted single room that had enough essentials to live forever. With a forest outside filled with edible mushrooms and fruits, and equipped with magic that could kill any Goblin, Zeala was living a comfortable retired-esque life.

“Then, what are you here for Morris? You seem really ecstatic today.” Zeala asked. She removed all the fruits and mushrooms out of the basket and placed them in her sink.

“Just here to hang out, what else do you think I even do?” Morris laughed. He stared at Zeala as she did her chores.

“Uhuh.” She scoffed at the obvious.

“I’m joking, I’m here to ask where you will be this night. The head knight is asking for an audience.” Morris remarked, still staring.

“Umm…” Zeala placed her hand on her chin, rubbing. “I think I’ll just be cleaning up the goblin villages around.” She answered. Zeala placed her hands down.

“You’re really such a hard worker. This is why the country is putting a lot of hope on you.” Morris said.

“But now that you mention about the audience… I guess I may just stay in the house…” She said with a glinting look at Morris.

For months or for the whole year Morris had known Zeala, he had always thought her feelings were of the same manner, but Morris had always been scared of any misunderstanding. With her eyes and cheek red, it was normal to think such thoughts, that was common sense, but as a normal thing for a man, one must always be cautious, and every single thought that runs through that brain should always be deleted.

“Welp, let me help you out there.” Morris stood up from the table and took 2 steps to the left, reaching the kitchen. “Still such a small house.” The two laughed.

“Kurt! Can I borrow some of your suit?” Morris knocked on his door.

“For what?” Kurt yelled from the inside. He hurried and opened the door, and almost got punched by Morris’s rapid knocking. “Careful!” He yelled.

“Oh sorry, hahaha!” Morris laughed.

“So, what do you need my suit for? You know, that you come running towards an official's house.” Kurt replied.

The two entered back into the house. Kurt went up the stairs to his bedroom and Morris followed. “I thought you would be back in the outside camp, why are you here?” Morris asked.

“You are asking me that yet you knocked on my door, also are you avoiding my question?” Kurt remarked. He entered his bedroom and opened his closet.

“What? Question? I didn’t hear anything.” Morris said with an obvious tone.

“It’s about Zeala isn’t it.” Kurt took his only suit surrounded by leather clothing and intensely shoved it to Morris’s chest. “Here, and now get out of my house.” Kurt pushed Morris out of his room.

“You’re really cold you know,” Morris said.

“Uhuh.” He hurried down the house to the entrance door until Kurt shouted. “Oh! And tell me if she says yes okay!” Morris scoffed and yelled back, “Of course!”.

Morris wore proper dressing and tightened his vest. He let out a huge sigh and inhaled the rose in his hand. Morris left the forest and entered the empty hill. Filled with his nervous heart, his senses were heightened to it’s extreme.

He walked slowly to the house and witnessed a few odd things. Goblin footprints were visible on multiple places on the ground. It wasn’t a single Goblin, based on the directions of the footprints, they all lead towards the hut.

Morris didn’t think any further and ran, just a single step toward and Zeala’s voice echoed from the house. It was beautiful and obvious.

Morris jumped straight to the door and kicked it open. With his beating heart and worried thoughts, the only thought that stayed upon laying his eyes on the beautiful maiden in a ravaged situation.

He was stoned at the spot and stared at one point with tears flowing down his eyes. The yells stuck through his mind and a smile revealed upon his face. The only thought that lasted in the damaged mind of his was… Goblins… are the best!

[Goby]

[The smartest Goblin who has a little too much trauma.]

[Specialty: Intelligent, Keen, and Diligent.]

[Cons: Deep Depression.]

“Well that was the last one, and I’m definitely not picking that.” Said Isaac, staring upon the guardian summoning screen above a circular pedestal.

“Kirikirik!” Yelled multiple goblins.

“I am not! And I repeat! Picking a mentally problemed goblin just cause he’s of your race!” Isaac yelled at the goblins surrounding him.

Three screens lay upon him, all displaying diverse races and talents, one was a Gargoyle that exuded incredible strength-

[Juzzum]

[The strongest Gargoyle of its castle, made by a Demon King.]

[Specialty: Strength, Speed, and Durability.]

[Cons: Not the smartest… might be dumber than a Goblin.]

-but lacked any other ability. The other one was a specialist, one who could elevate the daily living of Isaac.

[Haley]

[The head made of the empire.]

[Specialty: Metallurgy, Spotless Cleaning, Craftsmanship, and Loyalty.]

[Cons: Weak and Lazy.]

“Kirkirik!” Yelled the goblins once more.

“I will not pick the Goblin one! At least the others might be useful, Intelligence could be fixed with proper discipline and laziness could be fixed by once again, proper discipline. Mental Depression is on a whole other level. I say no to that!” Yelled to the Goblins, as he had explained every bit of detail he could.

Not that he had expected the Goblins to understand the complexity, but being a demon, Isaac had a special ability. “Pick. Goby!” The Goblins chanted. Being a Goblin, despite the lack of any visible system skill, he was able to understand what the Goblins were saying.

“No, that is final!” He yelled. In his mind, he was already set on “Haley.” A maid would help him the best, any other physical strength was pointless as being the boss of a dungeon was probably enough to sustain the tower for a while. Though it was a huge gamble based on the “B-Rank Adventurer.” he had confronted much earlier.

“It. Final!” A goblin pressed the screen of the Guardian named “Goby.”

“You can press that! Bullshit!” Light formed on the pedestal, and soon a Goblin much taller than the rest appeared. He had the structure of a normal mature adult male with his skin colored green. He resembled no Goblin but a handsome man painted green. Wait, that’s a goblin?

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Master.” Said Goby the Goblin. It was of human language instead of the broken language of the Goblins. It’s skin slowly turned to white and the Goblin truly resembled nothing of its kind. It was 100% just human.

…Illusion… this goblin knows illusion magic. An intelligent Goblin, that easily means a mage. This isn’t actually that bad of a deal. But his depression is not something I can just disregard.

Isaac stared and in his mind formed a conclusion that spanned only a single second. Proper posture, adult form, illusion magic to shape that of a human. He had definitely lived a difficult life, I don’t know how difficult but based on his form… He had been born through the process of a unique human and ordinary Goblins. Born with immense intelligence, he had definitely been hunted before. Getting his “maybe” parents killed, he ran into the forest, studied magic through books he had picked up before he completely ran, and learned how to make himself look like a human and then live a normal life.

But… he seems accustomed. It would be normal if the God System had already told him his mission but I don’t think the System would do the same thing he did to me. That means he died and was told his mission. But how would a Goblin who could make such an elaborate illusion die?

Oh well, I can’t worry about it much, his depression should be about his parents and society. Will not be easy to fix but with his mental stability it seems like I don’t have to worry about it too much… unless something unforeseen breaks him… Isaac stopped his thoughts and released a sigh

“Welcome, Goby, to my humble abode…” Isaac said, cringing at his attempt to sound sophisticated with such a childish voice.

Goby appeared on the pedestal with his head already low and his position already leaning on one leg. From the moment he was summoned, he had heard the voices of his brethren and formed the conclusion of Goblins surrounding him. With his eyes closed and his skin crawling from fear of whoever his so-called “Eternal Master” that the white figure told him about would be.

“Raise your head my loyal subject.” His head slowly moved up with Goblins laughing around him. His eyes opened and lay upon a tiny fat red baby with tiny black horns a toy-like black wing and a wagging black tail. Even with his proper form and thoughts tightly arranged, a small chuckle released from his mouth for a millisecond.

***

Perfect. “You dare laugh at me!” Isaac raised Goby’s body to the sky. “I dare not do such a thing, Master!” Wait! Never mind, back down! I can’t do that! He has mental problems!

***

“Well, Goby, meet your brethren, you can cancel that illusion of yours and follow behind me,” Isaac said. He turned around and the Goblins formed a circle around Goby as he slowly removed his illusion, revealing a tiny body and your normal ugly piece of Goblin face.

Goby was not surprised by the demon baby's demeanor, though he did not expect his magic to be seen through, he wouldn’t expect less from a being he had been ordered to serve.

“You may expect yourself to be a fighter or some sort, but as the Goblins are the ones who picked you, you will have to show me why you are the best choice in the first place.” Said Isaac, though Goby understood none of what he said, Isaac flapped his wings and flew out of the room.

It was the start of a new adventure for everyone in the tower, and I meant… everyone.
