40. Profession and Classes

Renold regarded Lucian with indifference as he walked closer. Lucian immediately had a bad feeling about this man. He didn't know this man, but he trusted his instinct, and they told him to tread carefully.

"It is a great honor to meet you, Mr. Dreslin," Lucian said with a straight face. He might as well be respectful. Maybe he wasn't as dickish as he looked?

Renold narrowed his eyes as he looked Lucian up and down. His eyes then hovered right above his head as he commented. "How Queer... The only thing I can identify from your status is your Name. I wonder, how did you acquire such an ability, Lucian?" Renold asked with an interrogative voice.

Lucian narrowed his eyes. He took a look at his stats.

[Renold Dreslin (The Mystic Wolf) - LVL ??? B]

Lucian's eyes dilated in surprise. This man has reached the Black Limit?!

Lucian immediately turned toward Giffard in surprise. He simply gave him an encouraging smile, oblivious to the turmoil in his mind.

Lucian previously believed this world had no idea of the Black Limit. However, he was very wrong. In fact, it seemed like they knew far more than he ever could know at the moment.

Renold seemed to notice something off. His eyes narrowed further as he observed Lucian with even more scrutiny.

Lucian sighed. This man is by far the strongest person in this town. He will have to play this game with him.

"It is one of the gifts Thanatos had given me. I'm sure you know of the effects a god's blessing can provide, do you not?" he replied as he stared into his eyes.

"Hoh? It seems you are quite the brave one; to speak to me in such a way. You must be glad to have someone to pass on your legacy to, Giffard," he said as he turned to regard Giffard.

"Such a legacy is suitable for someone such as you," he said as he turned back to Lucian, mockery on his arrogant face.

With a non-committal shrug, he continued."Either way, I have been tasked to escort you to the Kingdom. We shall depart next month after I have accomplished all I have come here to do. Till then, I suggest you gain as much strength as possible." he began walking away, Oblivious to the ugly expressive adorning Giffard's face.

"Wait. I have some questions for you," Lucian spoke before he left.

Renold stopped and turned as he stared a Lucian for a brief moment. He chuckled as he walked away.

Lucian watched Renold's back as he walked, a flat look still on his face. This definitely spelled trouble. With that man's prodding, his status as a regular human would be revealed sooner or later. He had to find a way to escape quickly. He had little confidence in continuing this facade for too long. He turned toward Giffard.

"Is that man always a prick like this, or does he just dislike Chosen?" Lucian was curious how such a man thought he could get away with having no regard for the Chosen.

'Well, in the report I sent out to the Kingdom, they had asked for your abilities to be listed. Considering the history of Innate Abilities like yours...

He shook his head in disappointment and continued, "He must have thought your ability was just as useless is my guess."

"And what is wrong with the skills you had taught me? It seems like he also believes them to be weak," he asked with curiosity. He needed to know how he was placed in the world. Knowing such information will help him in making plans moving forward.

Conviction bubbled up his face as he spoke firmly."Certain skills use Mana and others that don't. This sword technique supplements mana into it as a secondary force which is why it is so easy to use without Mana. Magical sword techniques, on the other hand, require Mana to be practiced.

Those arts are naturally stronger and more effective now and in the future. However!" he said.

"Do not be fooled by the instant gratification of using Mana. Although it will give great strength, it will dilute your warrior path. You would be far weaker without Mana than any properly trained warrior." He continued.

"That is why you must have a good understanding of your weapons. Most magical warriors rely on Mana to make up for the shortcomings they have in skill. To truly be strong, you must master the sword before supplementing Mana."

Giffard sighed as his passion died down. "You now know you are far weaker than most without using Mana. It is up to you to decide if you truly want to learn these arts. I will not blame you if you stop here."

Nodding in understanding, Lucian considered that as he thought of his current strength. That must mean he was still weak compared to some of the geniuses out there. "This insurmountable drawback of Mana... will I truly be able to surpass it? There must be some way to bypass it, or I will forever be this weak..." he thought.

Just as he had the thought, he banished it away. If the world would limit him like this, he simply needed to find a new, better way of Cultivation.

"I will learn all 10 weapons today," Lucian said.

Abruptly Giffard's head rose up in shock. After what he had said, he expected Lucian to immediately distance himself from his teachings. Many had done the same before. This was why he never had any other students but his son. He would be deemed unfit to teach someone being groomed to protect the human world if he didn't teach a Mana Based sword art.

"Don't you want teachings from someone more fitting to teach you?" he asked in confusion.

"From what you have taught me of this world, there are many paths to power. To assume that there is only one is a fallacy, leading only to ruin. I will not fall for such a Lie," he said with a genuine smile. Giffard had taught him more of this world than any other. Abandoning all his teachings simply because of his lack of magical sword arts was not who Lucian was.

Giffard regarded Lucian carefully. Suddenly he nodded with determination.

"From now on, you shall be my 2nd personal disciple," Giffard said with his hands behind his back. He had regained his typical regal aura; this time, however, his usual jovial expression was replaced with an expression of determination.

With a bow, he replied, "Yes, Teacher."

Giffard nodded. "Good. For now, we will go over how Classes and Professions work and the intricacies of Cultivation." He said as he vanished from sight, appearing multiple meters away on his chair at the edge of the training area.

Lucian quickly caught up as he took a seat opposite Giffard.

"Classes are a collection of attributes, skills, and abilities that define a person's combat experience. Having a class allows the system to identify your fighting style and reward you based on what your fighting style requires. It is one of the determining factors on what mana cultivation you can use effectively. It also becomes one of the main forms of Cultivation at later levels though I have yet to learn much about that. It also allows you to gain passive skills and abilities that cannot be acquired anywhere else but by acquiring the class!"

"There are many types of classes. Some are classified as higher ranked than others that require higher requirements but don't let that fool you. There has been more than one occasion where common classes defeated a unique or rare class. I myself have seen a common [Knight] Class easily defeat a Legendary [Sword Saint] class at the same level. The deciding factor in combat will always be the fighters."

"One thing to be wary of with classes, however, is the restriction they place on a person. After gaining a Class at Level 5, the class can restrict the skills you can learn, making choosing a class very pivotal to the type of combat you want to be proficient in, if only slightly in the beginning. After rank 2 and above, the restrictions increase dramatically. Changing classes is even more detrimental as it will do permanent and significant damage to your supernatural veins, making it harder to use Mana."

"Now, classes can be upgraded every 100 levels, so sticking to your decision till you reach your first transformation is also a viable way to change your class to better fit your abilities without dealing with the negative effects of removing it. You may also pick an additional class after level 100 to create a whole new class combination!"

"How do you pick a class?" Lucian asked. Hopefully, picking a good class could offset the fact he couldn't use Mana.

"Fortunately, classes can be picked in any registered town. Class centers can be found all over to help change classes and gain new ones," he replied. "In fact, I will have someone escort you to one of them later today for you to experience it yourself."

Lucian nodded in understanding.

Continuing where he left off, he said, "Professions, on the other hand, are much laxer at the cost of less of a boost. The main reason people choose professions is to gain extra ability in that profession or gain more rewards from specific dungeons. You can acquire multiple professions. However, the drawback is that you have to have some skill in each one to fit its requirements."

"Professions offer no bonuses to battle power, but most people pick at least one to supplement their combat abilities. Rising in strength in this world is incredibly expensive. Having a profession can bring in the extra income needed to help push you forward."

Done with his explanation, he took out his wine again and took a swig.

"Now, I will explain everything you should know about Cultivation."
